Breathing not important for taiji. The classic teaching is breathe naturally. Timing the breath to the movements is not good practice. Focus on relaxation as #1 and the breath will take care of itself over time. That said, when not doing taiji, good to become a belly breather in general for health and wellbeing, which as a side benefit reduces tension in the chest area, which will be good for relaxation in taiji.
