I came to this video because of the words in John Denver’s Thank God I’m A Country Boy which I heard again today. One part says ‘I’d play Sally Goodin all day if I could, but the Lord and the wife wouldn’t think it any good, so I fiddle when I can and work when I should. Thank God I’m a Country Boy!’ Wow. It sure is a piece for a violin virtuoso…
Michael Cleveland has proven that people do like instrumentals and that they can be more than two minutes long. Thanks to you tube, we can listen to what we like not what radio tries to tell us is good music.
I met Michael a couple of years ago at the Fiddle Gathering in Indiana. Not only is he an amazing talent, but he is a pleasure to speak with and is a class act. Well done.
I couldn’t agree more. In fact, I’ve been telling people that he’s the greatest player since Jimi, and nobody gets it yet. He’s the sun. They all work with and around him, even when he’s with friends in a hotel lobby jamming . So great.
Wow! I hafta see these wonderful musicians live and in concert for shore❤😂 Not long after I discovered just how fabulously Bluegrass can just make one smile ,I was hooked on the genre, it's truly an American original ( even though it's roots are in Old European Scotch-Irish ancestry) Well done gents and lasses!
Junior Samples yes, he’s composing as he goes along. His improvisations are eye watering . I heard some one say he has tremendous courage musically. When it’s his turn, he doubles down and then doubles down again. He’s a monster when he’s rolling.
I have heard a few bluegrass bands that can give"sally goodin"justice but this band knocked it out of the ball park. That fiddle player had that fiddle"SMOKIN' ".Just my 2cts.
I am not a huge Cleveland fan. But this is one incredible version of Sally Goodin. I grew up in TX and listened and occasionally played with the Morris s , Salomons, etc. He normally plays too fast for me on many old standards and they lose their feel. But he has nailed this one incorporating several styles. Kind of like Byron Berline does. Way to go Michael!!!
Don't know what goes on in this boy's head but it's sheer magic, whatever he plays he just goes off on one. Had the great fortune to see him live in Runcorn U.K a few years back and he was phenomonal. Also loved the way the mandolin player used to go walkabout round the stage.
I don't know a whole lot about blue grass , BUT , I Was lucky enough in the 80's to see Jerry Garcia Band at the Wiltern in L.A. and even though I was a metal head at the time (still am -haha ) I got to see some very serious blue grass / folk jams and have loved this since - M.C. is just incredible !!

Exactly!!! We get to decide how eclectic we want to be.
Bluegrass at its best. I live in France, just spent 3 weeks in Southern States. Nowhere long enough
Just the best fiddle playing I have ever heard...way to go Michael

Im definitely a Michael fan. He is to the fiddle as Hendrix was to the guitar
Kenneth Eppich That’s exactly right ! He’s the greatest player on any instrument I’ve seen since Jimi Hendrix. He’s a monster.

More like the doc Watson of the fiddle
There's this eastern european guy Alexandr Hrustevich who plays the accordion (the bayan) as fluently Michael plays the fiddle.
Look guys the world is not ready for you GREATNESS,. WELL DONE!!!
One of the strongest and best fiddlers ever! Amazing.
He is blind and somewhat deaf

WOW! Five minutes of riffing on Sally Goodin'! That's as much jazz as it is bluegrass. Great improvisation. I love it!

No? He seems to me, as a non-expert in this department, to be one in a million astonishing
Stellar performance Michael, I'd love to hear him live

My absolute all time favorite!!

Yesss. He’s the Hendrix of the fiddle. Bravo ! These are the MC years. Enjoy, those of you who get it.
I think that this is the Fiddle God, come down to earth to grace us with his presence!

Great rendition of this classic song; Michael & Co are great! Though I think that Byron Berline did it a bit better w/Bill Monroe, just IMHO.
Very innovative...
Damn!
Michael Cleveland and Flamekeeper - Dance Around Molly
Sure would love to see what Michael and Mark O'Connor could come up with together.
Have to smoke a cigarette after that fiddling 🎻!¡!!!
holy cow
The guy playing the fiddle is amazing. I would pay anything to hear this guy play.
And I think Jesse Brock is the best mando in the business. Especially since just recently equipped himself with a new McClanahan.
Goog old Marshall Wilborn on bass.
I took bass lessons from Marshall!
Cleveland saws it half should be the marker!!
Heyump!
make that good!
I approve
an unexpected journey... )
Name of the triangle player?
@Sevnfurdy No. It's a violin
Jesse Baker on the 5 string?
Yes.
@4:22 though…
Makes you want to take fiddle lessons!!
No use!
Is it in czech republic?
I'd say at least twice. lol
It's a shame this lineup didn't last a little longer. But bluegrass bands do tend to turn over at a rapid rate. (Some prominent exceptions.)
And I'm guessing Michael has never played that song the same way twice
check out..... Trampled by Turtles. Perhaps not as fast but quite enjoyable.
Cleveland can really saw one off eh!!?
Fiddle n joe
What is that bass? Is it electric?
Yes, it is an Eminence, electric/acoustic. Great for traveling. That's Marshall Wilburn playing it, too. Great player.
