I have one bass that is difficult for me to play but I love the way it sounds and looks.
And the good news is that I have two other basses that are easy to play. So if I have something difficult to record I can use them.
    Great video!

Thank you! I feel this way about my acoustic electric bass. I play that thing everyday, so I can easily play my other electrics. Good to hear from you, man. Keep playing!

I agree with the playability aspect but sometimes a difficult bass can inspire you to play something you wouldn't have thought of on another bass. I think the charisma of the instrument (or however you want to put it) can be just as important. I've got a few nice basses where I'm the limiting factor, but I think I write the best basslines on my finicky instruments. But then again, maybe I'd be the next Geddy if those basses had better playability.

Ha! Great point! However, the Ric and the Fender Jazz are Geddy’s main basses. If set up correctly, both are a dream to play. I know he also played Wal for a short period, as well as Steinberger. This Ibanez ATK is a wannabe Stingray. It has the thickest neck of any Ibanez I’ve ever owned or played but I love it!

I really want to find an 800 series.

@progrockjock they're stellar! I have the 810, as well as the 300 in fretted and fretless, and a 200 that I added an additional triple coil humbucker in the neck position.

That double-triple coil must sound insanely great! You've literally got all the basses covered!!

    I love my ATK305.
Also, curious to see what went, what stayed, and why.

I basically sold the basses because I could no longer justify keeping all of them. Of course, some of them weren't getting played much, but when I would play one, I felt I needed to favor that particular bass over the others. That also didn't work, so I decided to sell all of the instruments I had purchased over the past 3 years with the exception of the ATK700, which I got for a steal at $450. Video coming soon...

@@progrockjockMakes sense. Focus on your priorities.
Sometimes less is more. Play on.

A Rickenbacker, imo, is a great choice. I bought my first in '78, a 4001 that eventually turned into diapers and formula, fast forward a few decades, after my wife passed ( her name on this YT account) I bought another Ric, a 4003. I can't play as well as I used to, due to a little arthritis. But, damn I love playing that bass. Good luck, get it soon 🎵

Thank you for sharing your story! I’m really sorry about your wife 🙏 Part of the reason I’ve been selling off instruments is family-related, as well. My wife and I are working hard to keep a roof over our heads and support our daughter who’s in college right now. We also have a son who will need our support when he leaves the nest in 4 years. Anyway, thank you for wishing me luck with the bass. I’m sure can relate when I tell you that playing bass is how I seek refuge after a challenging day.

@progrockjock oh, I can definitely relate about playing bass, it's my refuge as well. I was 17 and in a dark place after a car accident when I started playing. It really brought me up. My prayers are with you and your family that your needs will be met and then some.

Thanks, man, that means a lot and I'm sending prayers back your way 🙏. My family will persevere. I have faith. Speaking of car accidents, I had one where a drunk driver swerved into my lane and hit me head-on, after my 20th birthday. I thank god that I'm still here to talk about it and I'm glad that I had the bass in my life to sooth me at the time. Keep on playing and take care...

I need a flexible sound that cuts through for dance music. And as I play long gigs for hours the most important for me is ergonomics.
And I just love my Ibanez EHB1005SMS. Yeah, the look of a headless bass often gets me mistaken for a prog metal or prog rock guy. But the look of the bass doesn't decide the sound.
The sound is in the fingers.
Equipment is not very important as long as it doesn't hold You back, just as he said.
Limitation may be the source of inspiration for sure!
It just depends what, where and for how long You play.
My EHB does it all for me.
Don't get me wrong, I really admire a lot of beautiful basses. But at the moment I am very happy with my workhorse. 😁

You have a great bass! I demoed the EBH1265MS when I was in Los Angeles back in August of this year. It's around the 13:00 mark of my International House of Music video. I also filmed some shorts that I have yet to post. I have you to thank for the reminder! The EBH1265MS is the first fan-fretted instrument I have ever played. It took some getting used to with chords but overall, the bass played like butter! My only gripe was the tuners on the bridge. I can get over the headless design but the tuners bothered me. At the end of the day, I can learn to forgive it, though, since it's an Ibanez.

I have one, too, the middle position of the toggle is my favorite, it activates the neck side coil only.

I have an ATK that is super comfortable and feels the most "me", but when I played a Jazz Bass for the first time I was shocked how much better it sounded. Is your ATK your go to bass tonally, or just playability-wise?

    • @progrockjock
      @progrockjock  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Both with the ATK. I have a 2007 MIM Jazz bass that I would completely love if it had SD pickups and a good fret dress. Once I get those things sorted out, I might claim the Jazz as my main bass, since it weighs nearly a pound & a half less.
