Prog Rock Jock
United States
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 25 ก.ย. 2020
This channel documents my journey as a music lover and a musician.
Ever since I could remember being able to hear, I remember the music I heard. My parents would play music from their favorite artists, as loud as our ears could handle, daily. They played it all except for Heavy Metal and Punk Rock. My interest in these aggressive genres of music is where my journey as a musician began.
It took me close to 5 years to evolve from the garage, but once I did, I went on to do countless recordings and concerts, as well as work with many reputable names in the music industry. You will see that I have the videos to prove it.
"Prog Rock Jock" is a nickname that an old bandmate gave me 20 years ago. He called me this because I was obsessed with Prog Rock. Plus, while I always denied it, he felt I was a bit athletically inclined.
I couldn't think of a better name for this channel, so I picked this one because I just wanted to get on with it.

Bass 35 Years Later Part 1
Have you ever asked yourself what advice you would give to your younger self if you could go back in time? I know it's unrealistic to think this way, but for fun, I decided to list things that were important to me when I first made the transition to bass that aren't important to me anymore.

Blake is the only one the "feels" good to me
Fender Squier 70's Vibe Jazz bass is like $440. So it's not too bad to have an all-around affordable bass that is from Fender. I have to argue that a Jazz bass is so much more versatile than a Stingray or a Precision bass. Stingrays sound amazing, but in my opinion, Jazz bass is the way to go for beginners and pros alike.
Nice
Ninjadrummer is the best audition ever
Everyone seems to hate on acoustic basses but I got one this christmas from my dad and its awesome and is a very welcome addition to my bass arsenal. I love it alot and its super nice being able to just have it next to me on the couch and I can just grab it whenever I want and play it without having to plug into an amp and grab a bass to play. Its a really great thing. I do agree with you on the thumb rest, I have played with a pick most of the time but decided I should improve on finger style. It does make it a bit harder but im getting used to it!
I have a Sterling Sub Ray 5 I love it, It even had the intonation set almost perfect right out of the box. Mine has 2 pickups which cost a little more, but way less than a Music Man.
Thanks for sharing your experience! I must say that I thought the HH was overkill and defeated the purpose of the Stingray design but man, do I stand corrected! I actually prefer the double humbucker now.
My favorite is Arthur dubois th-cam.com/video/sj8Ub-_69oA/w-d-xo.htmlsi=anHUaBSSpi4ulMNG
I saw this guy's video just recently. Definitely unique!
Happy New Year to you!
StingRays are my basses of choice! I've got Jazz Basses and P-Basses also but I feel like StingRay was designed for me. I feel home having my 2000 StingRay in my hands.
I have a sterling stingray and I've owned us made music man and Ernie Balls, the Sterling is an excellent instrument. Very light weight as you indicated. I play it more than my vintage p basses and j .basses.
I REALLY WANT THAT FRETLESS...IT'S MY OBJECT OF DESIRE...
WONDERFUL VIDEO...CONGRATS... BTW, ALL THE VINTAGE BASSES ( OR GUITARS , AMPS WHATEVER ) WERE NEW ONCE... THE ONLY SPECILALITY IS THAT, THE FAMOUS USER ( OR THE GROUP ) THAT IT HAS BEEN USED...NOT JUST BEING OLD, VINTAGE OR RARE... SOME COLLECTORS SPEND THOUSANDS & THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS FOR A VINTAGE GUITAR OR BASS...MEANINGLESS...JUST MEANINGLESS....MONEY DON'T GROW ON TREES BOYS...
Whoa! You took your Bass to the beach! Happy New Year! I enjoy your channel for your calm delivery and lack of hype or ego. It all comes through as you being honest. Keep it up!
Thank you! Yeah, I took my bass to Pensacola and Panama City beach in Florida. "Whoa!" is right. I should've mentioned that my Ibanez miraculously survived those trips to the beach, even though the back of the neck started to feel a bit sticky. This is probably why the pickups crapped out on me too. Dumb move on my part, but I was so hooked on playing in my early days that it was ridiculous.
@progrockjock Good for you. You still have it and you still play!
Happy New Year!
I own it and love it.
The Boss bass overdrive pedal is definitely a love it or hate it box- I think it sounds like a hive of angry bees, not a fan. Boss makes another super overlooked bass pedal though, which is similar sounding to the Dark Glass, it's called the BB1-X (I own it and love it). Part of the reason why it's overlooked is because it's digital (and expensive). Putting that aside, it sounds very natural, organic and definitely could be an "always on" kinda pedal. It goes from super subtle on low settings, just a mild enhancement, to full on fuzz when the dials are on max. There is also a mix knob to blend the wet/dry signal. The pedal also features low noise and a balanced output via a 6.35mm TRS output (if you want to connect it to your balance inputs).
Plastic feeling heavy and overall strange.
Happy New Year’s I can relate a lot to this video. My acoustic bass is my main bass. Most of my songs are just my acoustic bass and my vocals. Your Crafter looks beautiful. I’m looking forward to the second part of this video. Have a Happy New Year’s!!!
Happy New Year! Thank you! I do love my Crafter. I think the parallels with us is cool and awesome to know!! I'll follow up soon...
Sweet!
I agree! Here in Brazil, people are going nuts with the value of these vintage basses and equipment.
I love Phish's music, and that makes me a real rarity among Phish Heads, who mostly pretend to be virtuous thieves on nitrous oxide slinging dirty meth while calling it Molly. I think Phish is lying about their audience. I think Phish hates their live crowd. Real musicians avoid the lot scene entirely!
I hear ya. I actually started listening to Phish again after making this video. I couldn't help it. I really missed Junta...Divided Sky!! Lawn Boy is awesome too! I can't say that for the rest of the bands I mentioned.
Josh is a full red hat MAGA. Good luck fitting in. 😂😘
Josh can play drums. That's all that matters to me.
Yesh man, I was singing along as well, primus sucks!
The number one drummer technique is incredible with his Moller technique
Hey, thanks for the shoutout! Means a lot!
You're very welcome! You're one of the best out there.
Thank you for featuring me, dude!🤙🏻🤙🏻🤙🏻
You're totally welcome, man! I really enjoy hearing & watching you play.
Josh has great Infometal vids on his chanel where he plays drum fills over metal riffs with Alex Jones ranting over it. Very funny and great drumming. He is solid as a rock and has the right amount of quirkiness for Primus. He is also the guy from the Larsisms shirts.
All of them are good though.
I agree with you. I really could see him in Primus and that's part of why I like him for the gig so much. I knew he did those videos but I didn't get around to watching them until you reminded me. Thanks!
The, how close, but not quite, of all these guys are really just shows how great Herb is. Also, I just disagree with your list.
Herb is definitely a legend. This is why I think Jay Lane and Brain were also great because each had their own feel and were able to play well with Primus. Plenty of people have disagreed with my list and that's fair. It's been a month since I posted this video and while a few others have come along who are good, I still think the guys on my list play the songs quite well. The ultimate question is how well would they work with Primus. It's one thing to learn their songs, but when it comes time to collaborate or write new material, it will be a difficult challenge. Herb is as important to Primus as John Bonham was to Zeppelin and Neil Peart to Rush. It's going to be tough for Primus to move on without him, but they'll figure it out.
Thumbs up for Quicksand if nothing else
Oh, and thumbs up to your handle! Brendan Canty is another one of my favorite drummers.
Great message ... I remember being on 48th street NYC ,, SAM ASH had a 6 string john Patitucci model for $5000 ... back in 2005 ,,, just hangin out on their wall of basses ,,, I loved it ,,, should have bought it .. that bass now sells for over $10000 easy ... to have it made prob cost $200000 ... Its the bass that John Patitucci first album cover ,,, I still think about it ,,❤😂
I respect you opinion.....BUT I'll never let my vintage basses including the 1978 P-Bass go out. They are still a good investment and hold their value...the new ones DO NOT! I agree with you the price of vintage guitars is off the charts......
I hear you. I'm still hanging on to my old P Bass and my custom shop Strat. I'm not sure how much I spoke about it in this video, but a lot of basses I've owned over the years have done better than some of my stock investments.
I guess they didn't trust that enough people from the "McCartney crowd" would buy this over a Hofner. But round wounds are a joke on this instrument. La Bella nylon wound transformed this into a quasi-upright monster for me. Then, I equipped it with a Realist LifeLine piezo. Fits right into the treble side of that wooden bridge and blends beautifully with the mini humbuckers. The output jack can be stuffed into the round end of the bottom f-hole. Finally, it deserves better tuners than those plastic headed abominations. Affordable Gotoh compact bass tuners dropped right in, no drilling necessary. Made a WORLD of difference.
No Mike Machine? Cmon dude...
I discovered Mike Machine after posting this video. You're right, he's awesome! More videos and discussions coming soon...
Josh gets my vote. A total natural
Thanks for doing these reviews, very cool. I’m Greg Russell…from your list. th-cam.com/video/KFbcag8wWLY/w-d-xo.htmlsi=LfEFkVDvWY2ZEu0P This is the link to my submission.
You're welcome. Actually, you were supposed to be the closing drummer in this video! You have the best presentation of any other drummer I've seen on TH-cam, hands down. No BS. I've been pretty sick and just wanted to post this video, so I could move on to some other topics I've been holding. This is why I only posted this video with 4 drummers instead of 5, like the last one.
@ hope you feel better!
Thanks, man! New follow-up video coming soon...

@@jswervy16 Of course, I totally remember you! I'm glad to know you're still playing, man! It's great for the soul. I'm doing as well as I'm gonna be during these crazy times. Likewise!!
@@progrockjock Absolutely still playing. A bit better than I was. 🤣 Glad to see you're still rippin' it all these years. Too many fellow musicians just walked away. A few of them passed. Keep rockin my man!
@@jswervy16 🙏
I can still remember the first one I heard when I was 15 before I was even a guitarist and just how surprisingly quiet it was *and that was 31 years ago! lol* They're not useless and yet 90% of them still are not what you're really hoping it to be. I love bass but on the other hand I play primarily 6 and 8-string guitar so when I'm not playing bass at least once a week, *I can't expect an acoustic bass will change that.*
It’s hard to tell how it really sounds when listening to this on an iPhone.
I understand.
What’s the Watts?
The Ampeg RB-112 is 100 Watts.
It is not that I don't like string instruments taking a sound in another direction, don't get me wrong. I try to do similar things by using a hollowbody 12 string and playing several synth pedals with it. But the 8 string bass is, alas. not the thing I seek. I thought that the sound would make the bass sound more growling, but instead I hear that this kind of bass sounds lighter. I understand that people seeking for '' other'sounds may like it, but it still is not the thing for me.
My favorite, for now, is Rick Kinney : th-cam.com/video/8kmpmd38qcM/w-d-xo.htmlsi=NqO3RPpikK0HBc8n
Thanks to you, this drummer is a new discovery for me! He's right on!
Did any of your pics get an in person interview in California with the band?
I am not sure.
@@progrockjock My hometown friend John Hoffman who was not one of your pics is on his way to California for a live audition. I guess you missed him on your search or maybe you didn't like his style and character.
Been talking about John Hoffman on this thread. I LOVE his style and character! I wish him all the best with that live audition! I believe he has what it takes.
Go watch. John Hoffman's audition he smokes everybody hands down 100%
Yeah, the guy from Louisiana, right? I watched his audition twice. Dude has pocket for days!
Thank you, Sir. You gave me great insight into the reasons why sometimes one should be playing the acoustic bass, instead of an electric one. I believe that, on top of all the reasons you have very wisely pointed out, there are song parts which would never sound the same if performed with an electric instrument. Today is one week before Xmas 2024 day and a fortnight before New Years Day 2025. Let me wish you a Happy Season, and a successful brand new 12 month period! Hope someday you visit my country, if you havent already done so. I am in LISBOA, capital city of PORTUGAL. Give us the great honour of spending some time here. Then you can move on to neighbour Spain, France and wander around, blessing the rest of Europe with your art and musical talent, mate! Warm regards! God bless you!

Hey Everyone! I know that "Welcome to This World" is on Pork Soda! I made a copy & paste error during editing. This happens with me from time to time, but it's noted correctly in the video timeline, as well as the chapters. Thanks for watching this video and for all of the comments!!
Have you seen ninja drummer's audition since making this video? He just posted it 8 days ago so you may not have seen it yet. No disrespect to these gentlemen on this video, but I think he is the one!
Yes. Bebetto TheNinjaDrummer has been mentioned more than any other drummer in these comments. He's awesome!...but his audition hit TH-cam after I posted this video. I reached out to him and paid my compliments. A follow-up is in order...
Betto for me ))
