My dad has played a Stingray since the late 70’s and he always puts his thumb on the end of the fretboard. There’s a groove dug out of the finish by the neck there. It’s my favorite bass that exists. His bass is the gold standard by which I measure all basses.
What is up with their pricing seriously? The new versions of the sub line have necks that feel like they’re IKEA table legs, and the Asian made ray 34’s priced close to an American made fender seem to have cheaply made hardware these days. Good thing Sire are making some music men style bases, because these clowns need some competition because their current line up is just horrific value for money Also ash body and it’s not heavy? Clearly it’s a composite body with cavities in it, but again not reflected in the price
£3.5k.... Crikey! Does it have unicorn horn and mermaid's tears on the list of materials it's made from? I'll stick with the Sire Z-Series I've ordered from Andertons.
@@LCA1985Yea, that's incorrect. They're completely different preamps with different frequencies that you're adjusting. The 3 band has an HPF built in that prevents it from getting the real lows of the 2 band, and it shows. The treble on the 2 band is a higher frequency, making it sweeter and easier on the ears. The treble on the 3 band is almost like high mids by comparison. A 3 band is never going to sound or feel like a 2 band to play. The 2 band feels more like a passive bass, where on the 3 band you really feel you're playing an active preamp.
The price turned me off. There's nothing special about it. I bought a mint condition Stingray classic a few years ago on Reverb for $1800. Same mutes, 9v preamp and 2 band eq, except mine had a insane birdseye neck and fretboard. 10 lbs though for the new ones? I sold mine bc it was a boat anchor too. Bought a Stingray Special and think it sounds as good if not better than the classic. And if you leave the mid eq at center detent you still have the classic sound on a Special so no great win here. No one uses the mutes, they're a pia to adjust quickly hence making them difficult to use on the fly at a gig.
Specials don't sound like the 2 band, and they don't sound like the old 3 banders either. Specials sound pretty neutered to me, they don't have the same bite and character, the only good thing about them is weight loss, but if you look very (and I mean very) hard, you can find older 2 band and 3 band Rays under 9 lbs. I found mine at 8.5 lbs and it kills any modern Special tone wise.
@@mouthmw I agree that was a terrible move he made on that one. If nothing else that stays in the collection for studio use. When it comes to basses typically the heavier they are the beefer and fatter the tone, so when the weight is dropped then sacrifices are made in tone.

I don't want a super heavy bass, it sucks for live use. I'm not a tone wood guy when it comes to solid body electric instruments, it's all boomer voodoo mojo talk to my ears.
The special doesn't have the zing of the classic 2 band, but it is more versatile. Both are great basses. Keep in mind a few years ago is a few years ago, a good shape classic will be over over 2k now easily.
I have a cheap Ibanez GSR200 with DiMarzio pickups. I paid $185 for the bass, and already had the pickups from a project that never came to pass. The neck is FANTASTIC, and the pickups work really well with the "Boom" knob. My bass rig is a GK MB500, and a Hartke HD112 bass cab. I replaced the HORRIBLE HyDrive speaker with a 600 watt Faital NEO 12, and the rig sounds awesome! I FINALLY found the sound I have been searching for after 50 years of playing bass, and believe me, I have tried just about every combination of basses and amps during that time period, but I never gave up. Life is good!
I’d have bought the sunburst if you’d have price matched GUITARGUITAR but because they didn’t have the sunburst in stock you wouldn’t price match. But if they had had the sunburst I’d have just bought it off them so what’s the point of your price matching policy?

He played mostly P-basses, although he sounded different when recording Another One Bites the Dust since he recorded that one with a Stingray. He would use the SR at the end of the 70's-early 80's, but he went back to heavily using his P-basses again. So, he doesn't really stand out for using a Stingray.
Never was a fan of the Music Man bass. Until I bought a cheap OLP bass because it was a good price and on mint condition. I like it and then went to a music store to try the real thing I was really digging it. Though I'm a Fender man threw and threw J's and P's and have way to many basses I would like to get a Music Man some day.
Love the Stingray - I made a thumb rest 'stick' at work with a special plastic(same texture as the pickups)...super easy - I used an easy removable 3M adhesive will not damage the pick guard at all. It's perfect - 10 bucks. Done.

I got my first StingRay back in 2017 for my 18th birthday and it’s still my go-to bass (aside from my Rickenbacker 4003S) for when I want that classic sound, I still remember getting into them because of dudes like Flea, Tim Commerford, John Deacon, Cliff Williams from AC/DC, Tom Hamilton from Aerosmith, Johnny Christ from Avenged Sevenfold and Alex James from Blur just to name a few but it’s still one of my absolute favourite bass sounds and I’ll always love them
The Music Man stingray is The next best thing to a modulus!!!!!!!!!! If you're not familiar with them, you should check them out; they play like butter, and can sound like virtually anything that you want, excluding NOTHING!!!!!!!!!! Flea, from the chili peppers used stingray bases, and you know how amazing his work was!!!!!!!!!! I know you mentioned him, but Stevie Wonder remake of higher ground!!!!!!!!!! Spectacular!!!!!!!!!! And of course, the build of those basses, in every detail, is absolute perfection!!!!!!!!!!
Beautiful instruments ... I owned a 2eq teal n a 3eq natural ... I sold them both ... the neck is a baseball bat ... too chunky especially @ the first fret for my liking ... the ergonomics weren't right for my left hand ...
Glad to see the comment about no neck dive. It's an important but often overlooked characteristic - what's it like played standing up with a strap should perhaps be included in guitar and bass reviews.
The prices are ridiculous and MM will kill this bass off with modern players in the end like Gibson did with the 335. It's a shame that its such a premium
I had 2 music man stingrays and neither had the pickup polepieces line up properly on all 4 strings - not excusable given the price. The polepieces were miles away from the G. So, I hear what you're saying but they've been far from perfect. Never had that problem with Fender

EBMM are really insane. A sub-2000 bass for 3500... You can have a boutique personalized bass for that price.
Where's the nat finish? I can't find it anywhere.
You can only get the ash finish directly from EBMM Vault.
Don't need a finger rest if all you do is slap. Personally I rest my thumb on the E (or B) string.

I bought one new in 1978. Still got it and it’s a great instrument.
You'll never get the feel of any bass from a review as normally all reviewers tickle the bass and play one or two bog standard 15 second riffs..😂..
I put a Thumbrest on my Stingray about where the Pickup usually would be. Since then it feels way better to play.
