I love how you actually clean every part before putting things back together. You know not all mechanics do this. I was trained under a master mechanic back in the late 70's and this is how he trained me. clean everything then reassemble. You're awesome Ray and very meticulous. Thanks for such great videos.

And mold making and tool and die it was a must to clean every part because one little grain of sand control you out thousands of an inch and totally ruin your tooling it's the right thing to do and at the end when the customer looks it looks like you cared and it it makes a big difference have a good day

Dirt is the chief enemy of any mechanical system. One of the mechanics who taught me illustrated it this way. Take a teaspoon, fill it with sand, and level it off with a straight edge. Then dump it down the throat of the carburetor (behind the air cleaner). You have just caused 10,000 miles of wear to that engine. Love the videos, Ray! Keep 'em coming!

I am a former validation engineer and I always have questioned other engineers about placement of known sensor , wiring , fuel systems, and filter issues I was tasked due to previous customer complaints . The bottom line is the only factor that takes president over anything connected to a million dollar machine because most corporations are controlled by bean counters . Engineers are the ones who have to fix all the B.S. failures from customer complaints and have budget cuts forced on their department leaving them only to use vendors under contract who caused most of these failures .

I wholeheartedly agree. I did my time as an engineer for two major European manufacturers and experienced all the same frustrations. Even though I've been out of the role for a good many years now it still annoys me a little when I hear mechanics complaining about the engineers who actually had to put the car/ truck into production with costs being the bottom line all the time.

    • @philbeech4413

@@RainmanRaysRepairs That’s the end result most of the time. Would I state that engineers always get it right? No, I’m not that naive; there are plenty of examples of long standing issues that are the result of fundamentally poor basic design… but even when engineers put their hands up and say “we got this wrong, we need to rethink” - the accountants say “you’ve got to make the best of what you’ve already got”. Having been a hands on engineer and done plenty of repair work myself, I can understand the frustrations from both perspectives.

The Duramax V8 engine is a family of 6.6 liter Diesel V8 engines produced by DMAX, a joint venture between General Motors and Isuzu in Moraine, Ohio. The Duramax block and heads are poured at The Defiance GM Powertrain foundry in Defiance County, Ohio. This engine was initially installed in 2001 Chevrolet and GMC trucks, and has since become an option in pickups, vans, and medium-duty trucks. In 2006, production at Moraine was reportedly limited to approximately 200,000 engines per year.[1] On May 9, 2007, DMAX announced the production of the 1,000,000th Duramax V8 at its Moraine facility,[1] followed by the 2,000,000th on March 24, 2017.

These are pretty solid vans. We drive a fleet of 3500s. The last major redesign was in 2003 and since then barely anything has changed except the transmissions. Around 2010 GM went from the 4-speed automatic to a 6-speed. The main things to watch out for are brakes and cooling system issues. The brake system will corrode from the inside out if you do not change your brake fluid often enough and you will be looking at a $2000 repair bill. The same is true of cooling. That orange "OAT" coolant becomes corrosive when exposed to oxygen and will corrode the entire cooling system. The coolant level naturally declines due to seepage from the water pump etc. This means you must monitor your coolant level closely and top it up if it does not reach up to the radiator cap, or you will again be looking at a $2000 repair to replace all of the cooling system. Ask me how I know.
By the way if you have a 6-speed transmission and it is always shifting into the wrong gear, get the shift schedule reprogrammed. We had some of what were supposedly "the same" vans and transmissions, but some would have good power and drive great while others were absolute dogs, constantly shifting into too high of a gear and then downshifting when you lost too much speed. Just an awful driving experience. Others, though, were really nice. Go figure.

@@LJJKD1947 No, the 4L60 and then the 4L60E evolved from the 700R4. The only thing a 4L60 and a 4L80 have in common is oil. The 4l80 is commonly retrofitted into many performance applications due to its strength and dependability. However, it is heavier than the 4L60(E) and takes more power to turn.

One part I don't miss about not being a tech anymore is the new parts crap show (specifically aftermarket ones). Being handed the wrong part or incorrect part for said vehicle numerous times, all the while trying to beat the time allotted for the job and so the customer can get their vehicle back to them in a certain time period. Then by the time the right part arrives the pressure added by the parts crap show now puts added pressure on the tech to get the job done asap. I don't miss it at all.

Then, one day, at band clamp…. (American pie reference) lol newer Chevy vans are nicer for oil pan gasket than old ones. Old ones had to remove bolt from pass side engine mount, and lift engine for clearance. Clearance Clarence. Lol. Good vid tho!

Ray, another great video the only concern I had at the end was that the oil fill cap wasn’t aligned like you are always determined to set at. I hope you caught that and made the necessary adjustment ha ha I have a great rest of the weekend always enjoy every one of your videos

I used to drive a 1 ton van for my job and I never allowed to get that dusty/dirty inside, but then I am a little OCD. I keep all my rigs as clean as possible.

Punch a hole in the oil filter a couple of times and let it drain while you remove the oil from the drain plug - not so messy - suggestion only - that's how I do it

I prefer the vacuum line HVAC system to the electronic version. It is dependable. I have a 1988 GMC pick up and have replaced the 9 port vacuum switch one time in all the years we have owned it. I have also repaired the vacuum lines once. On the 1999 GMC Suburban we own, I have replaced all the door motors at least once and the defrost motor three times over the years. All motors had the same problem. The plastic gear cracks and the metal shat moves without the plastic gear moving and yes I use GM parts, but they are now made in China.

Leverage is your friend until gravity takes over.
When you took the oil filter off my first thought was; they're treating this thing terribly. That oik looked like an old briggs and stratton lawn mower oil, don't change just add.
As always great vid. I really took heed with the dramatic slo-mo.

5:11 I think most of the oil in the torque converter dust cover may have been after removal because I think it passed under the flow of oil from the drain pan.

Ray, Where did you learn all about being a mechanic? My dad was a mechanic all of his life and was self taught for the most part. But there wasn't all that much to automobiles back in the 1930s and 40s. Some of his education came from attending seminars and classes for specialty items. He invited me to accompany him to one of them and we learn all about those new fangled disc brakes that we had been hearing about. It was a fascinating class, but I chose a different career path. I never liked getting greasy.

Nice job Ray: Excellent job sir. Lately what they call mechanics is a real joke. Every dealer here in N.J. labor rates is $ 250.00 to $ 300.00, an hour. Car parts here in N.J. are nuts & getting worse. For a 2014 Subaru Outback to replace the intermediate exhaust pipe & both mufflers are $ 2,000.00 + rax & shop supplies. That includes 2 hours labor at $ 250.00 an hour. If you ask for a discount they tell you to take a hike. TMP from N.J.

@@Slithey7433 Good morning Mr. Giff: I've been turning wrenches for 60 years & sold both of my shops. I got so pissed off at try to get things done I ended up doing things myself. I needed brakes on my Subaru & trying not to get Chinese crap it took me 7 weeks & hours on the computer. What should have cost $ 500 to 600 max cost me $1,831.00 to get it done correctly. Most unsuspecting people are at the mercy of these morons at the auto chain stores & have 0 product knowledge. They read & tell you what their computer says & tough shit. God forbid if you ask where the parts come from or where there made. There is a Subaru parts dept. Close to me & the parts Mgr is a terrific person but the Owner / dealer sets up the prices & they will not deal. What kind of a vehicle do you own sir ???? TMP from N.J.
