I have had 4 patrols, 3 shorty's and Long 1 turbo'd 2 N/A and 1 Chevy powered comp truck, Turbo-ing the TD42 is the best mod you can do for the money just wakes them up and doesn't hurt the reliability if you don't go wild. I ran 36'' TSL swampers and I ran 37 x 13 Boggers on my comp truck you need to drop the gearing to get the best out of them. Ran 33'' on the daily Drivers they were so much nicer to drive on the road, Thanks for the vid Graham it's always good to see how the experts fit out their rigs and something I have noticed with you guys is you have what works and what is needed and nothing that doesn't have a purpose. Cheers Mate.

An episode of Shorty and the Dirty 30 would be phenomenal!!! Such a throw back to when I started watching your dvds and videos. I really miss seeing the old girl in the outback doing what you built her to do. And plus I know you have to like driving Shorty more than the D-Max because shes your pride and joy. Thank you for the walkaround and Q n A of Shorty, it's nice seeing how you guys have your rigs setup. Thank you for the time and effort you put into everything you do Graham! Take care and hope your having a good one.

Love the GQ, Shorty's gorgeous, I'm a toyota boy but my first rig back when I learnt to drive was a 1990 Nissan Pathfinder and she never once left me stranded, no matter how hard I loaded the dice.
It is truly a labor of love with an old 4by, but the rewards are real. Best year of my life spent troutbuming with my dog and old '79 hilux in the Sierra Nevadas here in California RIP Primer.
I've just put everything back into the lux. Old Blu just got a newly built bored out 22re with RV cams/lifters, 5speed trans, dual ARB airlockers, ARB diff breathers, 4.56 gears, updated calipers and rotors, updated alternator... Soon the mechanical will be dialed and I can move on to the aux electronics and comforts.
Feeling a bit inspired from yours and Shorty's story. Thanks for sharing.

  • @aussiedrifter

G'day Graham, Well I would always go for the Old & reliable 4X4's because if you have a problem or breakdown especially
bloody electrical you stand a dam good chance of getting yourself going again.
The older machine's are for the most part fairly straight forward & with a little bit of basic understanding you can diagnose the
problem & go from there. Take "SHORTY" with it being a straight forward diesel once it is running it will keep on running till the cow's
    come home.
The New stuff might have all the bell's & whistles, with all the gear & all the bling but if you damage or have a simple sensor go out your stuffed
that's if you can work out which one it is, & don't even bother if there's an ECU problem, just get a Tow truck if your in mobile service.
Anyway Mate I hope You & Your's along with Shauno & the Crew at 4WD Action have a Merry Xmas & a Bonza year ahead.
Have a good one Mate, Steve.
    Perth WA.

I used to have a Mahindra diesel, equivalent to a CJ3B soft top, ripper of a thing, I took it into all sorts including the Simpson 24 years ago or so, one car only, we got hopelessly lost up there, did 1600k in a 800k stretch, but, it was the greatest trip ever, no doors, bad fuel, three blokes all of us mechanics!! 7 Jerry cans with fuel and water and swags on the guards and in the back plus cooking gear, don't ask how it all fitted but somehow it worked, we got bogged in the sand broke shocks, ate fresh kangaroo, and had a ball, the thing never left me standing, then I upgraded to a 60 series!!? Old for sure! It's all about the adventure isn't it?

I’m a mechanic in SA and a large amount of cars we get coming through are newer 4WDs. They 100% hav their benefits, but at the same time, a lot of them have significant trouble areas that I personally believe hinder their ability as a 4WD. Specifically, “Jacking Mode” on the new Land Cruisers and Prados. From my limited experience, they are too delicate and too new to be thrown into a 4WD environment.
Me personally, I have a 2001 GU Patrol. She is an absolute beast and love it to bits. Even though it still has a ZD30

Nice wee video man, I'd love to see a Shorty meets the Dirty 30 video on 4wd Action..! As for getting thirsty I had to pause and go get a second half way through, none of this one beer an episode malarkey.
I am impressed with the tech that is in the new 4wds but at the same time that's what puts me off them, I love the old box shapes and the simpler workings of the old beasts. When I toured Oz for 18 months I had a 3l v6 '96 Nissan Pathfinder and it was just a machine. Like yourself I didn't tinker too much, a 2" lift, some bigger a/t' s and regular maintenance seen me take on 50,000km of the Aussie outback, beaches, islands, sand dunes and spine crushing corrugation as well as a few of the forest tracks and the old girl just kept on going and taking me to amazing camp sites in amazing locations all over Australia.

But the nub of it is, you clearly show that to enjoy the froading bit you just need to do it, a well prepared ( not a show stopper ) albeit long in the tooth vehicle and there is loads of fun waiting us, well done and thanks for an entertaining video. I sold that back in July and bought a brand new 2019 Ford Ranger FX4. The technology in this 4x4 is unbelievable, it is so stable it's almost no fun. It is almost impossible to put the thing sideways in the snow. It's much safer, but I do miss the old Durango because I actually did the driving instead of the computer.

As somebody with n obsessive passion for Land Rover's (and a freelancer for Classic Land Rover mag) I have to say I Adore the new 4wd's, the way that teh tech just makes them BETTER, and Easier to use means that the hobby is Vastly more accessible to more people, which can only be a good thing. For example the recently revealed new Defender will comfortably go much further than my old Series 3 88", or even ANY of the prior Defenders.
For me personally though the joy of wheeling a old Series, even if I can't get as far as the newer trucks, is the skill I enjoy

John to bloody right mate, there’s a reason that NZ and Aus 4x’s (well the ones that go places) are mainly Patrols(Safaris), 80 series Cruisers, pre- 2003 Hiluxs, old as high kay 70’s, the odd, well modded Prado and every now and then a Disco that’s been done properly ! Shit. almost forgot, the every ones had one or 2 4Runner or Surf!! I’ve had 4, first one was an 87 2 door, 2l petrol 4 cylinder 2 inch body and 2 inch suspension lift on basically a 34in Muddy. 16 years old my second car. thought mth shit didn’t stink...
To be fair, i’d love to still have that trick now, some 17 years later, even with all its gremlins i loved it, went hard off-road!! cheap as hell to 🏃‍♀️

Hey Graham, I’ve got a 99 dx wagon and she is pretty well the same, not heavily built be definitely reliable and gets me everywhere.
I’m a fan of both old a new, both have their ups and downs but I do like knowing if something goes wrong in the oldies you can Macqyver your way out of anything.
So all up I’m happy with her and it’s nice to hear that you don’t need massive rigs with all the features in the world to get you to some spectacular places.
Thanks mate, and all the best.

Hi, I was interested in how your seats are going? Are they standard or have you upgraded them and if so, what are they now.
    Cheers

I prefered the none production version of this vehicle breakdown good work. Fairly new to 4wd action but been watching it alot.. Not many vids can keep my intrest for 20 mins but watch all the way through and usually a second after... Wish i had places like yall have to ride out on and spend a weekend with a few other like this. Keep up the good work fellas

I still have and love my old TF Rodeo 2.6 petrol even but I know it inside and out and I've done the flinders and gawler rangers, googs track and border track. The only mechanical mod is a front lokka but she's done me proud 10yrs towing my tool trailer every day before I finally started locking the hubs and going bush. My kids love my 4wd too because they can see more!!

Thanks Graham for a great insight into Shorty. To answer your old or new question, I had a bare bones 1988 Ford courier. Was a top little truck, went from that to an FJ Cruiser, don’t hate me for my Toyota ownership. Must confess I’d struggle to go back to the courier. The way you have Shorty set up is inspiration on how to set up the new version of a Toyota Shorty. Oh and you timed your statement about my drink being empty to the second. Cheers mate.

I have a 23 year Isuzu Bighorn. It is a challenge to keep it running but i'm getting there. It's all I can afford but knowing how much care I put into its upkeep I can't fault owners of older vehicles, nor do I judge owners of new vehicles. Part of my enjoyment is working on my truck and keeping it going.

Nice to see this go through. i live i Norway and just got hold of an -88 Mercedes G-wagon. It was a complete steal since the owner thought it had a blown motor, but it was a 20 minute fix. Feels good to have a 4X4 again after selling my Jeep Cherokee years ago. Been inspired by your vidos so just mounted Cooper Discoverer stt pro´s so this weekend im going to drive out in the deep snow and steal myself a christmastree! Keep doing what you´re doing and i´ll keep watching.

I brought my late fathers 88 GQ (safari) Japan import 24volt... A number of fokes ask why I drive it... I feel the old boys still with me every drive grinning from ear to ear.. he loved that thing dearly... It always got him where he needed to be and he pushed that poor thing beyond its limits. Love the old 88 Nissan shorty.

I also own a short wheelbase 4x4. It's a 1995 jeep YJ and I tell you that it's my most favorite vehicle I've ever owned. There is just something about old 4x4's that the new ones can't replicate. I also own a 2015 Toyota 4runner. I don't worry about anything with my 4runner at all....but the YJ? Well....you need to keep on top of it. It's 27 years old after all. I've only owned my YJ for five years but they've all been awesome.

Happy Friday Graham. Watching on Friday because my Thursday was sitting on the beach at Lancelin bagging out on Tailor. I'll never get rid of my Mav unless it's to get another one. 523,000km NA TD & she just keeps chugging along everywhere I want it to. I'll rebuild the engine eventually & maybe even throw a turbo on it but I'll be sticking with the factory pump & 12 ish psi as well. Reliability is everything to me.

Owned a shorty a couple years ago was good fun. Just needed to much work done to it. So sold it and got a 106hilux and that’s a 2.8 N/A and boy that’s slow when trying to turn 35s 😂 been doing it up for the last year and a half now she’s got a turbo kit on it and she flys ❤️❤️

Great to see Shorty again! My daughter and I follow 4wd Action religiously here from South Africa. We also enjoy your AusSolo episodes. I don't understand why Shorty is not on 4wd action. I imagine the D-Max is sponsored therefore no Shorty, but we would very much like to see it on a trip with the new Dirty 30 to Coff's or Cape York. Cheers!!!
