    So I just realized I was doing my hand motions in the opposite directions the whole video! Yes, I know my rights from my lefts! ETTR should have a RIGHT-skewed histogram, just to clarify. Ignore whatever my hands are doing ;)

      I usually shoot in full manual (in order to try to best all 3 exposure principals) but I usually get my best results (even with histogram peaking in the middle) with high iso values(400-800) during day and am from the tropics in one of your previous videos you mentioned something called equivalent exposures but since it's a long process of trial and error I end up going with my current settings(not to miss the shot) is there an app or site that can do the math

    Very good explanation. Thanks a lot. Regarding the JPEG preview, maybe histogram + zebras can be a good combination what is overexposed or not?

    5:25 You never explain how to expose "TTR" other than saying not to change the ISO/gain. You use excessively vague terms like "tone" and "tonal sections" around 1:39 . I've been adept at various video chips since 1983 and and especially comfortable with 12 bit color systems since 1985. Yet I still have no idea what you were trying to communicate. Not at all.

    I’m not willing to process in post, so I try to do my very best in camera. And shoot JPEGs. Yes I know this limits my creativity. But I’m super busy as a surgeon with no time or patience to process. So is exposing to the right purely applicable to shooting in raw?

    Ok, there is a big mix up here: skewness refers to the *tail* of your distribution. A left-skewed distribution has its left tail longer than its right tail, shifting its center (or "peak") to the right, and vice versa for a right-skewed distribution. In a nutshell, when you perform ETTR, you want your histogram to be skewed *to the left*. It's a simple error to spot when you are watching the video, but if you have the video running in the background then it could cause a lot of confusion.

    I have found that the image on the back of your camera has to be taken with a grain of salt. Good for composition, otherwise can be very misleading.

    Good video. But digital values are only 2 base vs 10 base, it doesn't change linearity. Noise increase is just the fact, as you said, that very low values are already in the noise. You don't need quantization under the noise floor, unless you want useless information. If bit depth was an issue, we would see 16 bits adc. You find 16 bits in MF because their dynamic Needs it
    Like I read on the web, full your well 😊 your sensor deserves it. That's all is about ETTR.

    ETTR is the closest thing to a “hack” that let’s aps-c shooters achieve similar noise levels to a FF sensor camera

    It’s true, when you raise the exposure on a dark area or a dark subject, it gets very grainy

    Sony has a setting that allows to show zebras - the highlights at a user-set point. The manual says that depending on the subject, it can be set at 70-80 for portraits and set exposure that the zebra SHOWS on the skin barely, or set for 100+ for landscapes and make sure the zebra DON'T show. Of course, this could be tested practically and see the results.

    ETTR seems to apply to well exposed environments. But what about low light situations, is it better to increase ISO and thus noise OR is it better to underexpose and in post increase shadows?

      Underexposing in camera will only create more noise when brought up in post, not less. Remember that ISO does not cause noise, low light does. The principle of ETTR applies no matter how much light there is available. The trick is to use the slowest shutter speed as possible to let it more light.

    is ETTR the same thing as exposing for the highlights?

      It's avoiding that, useful, highlights are not burnt. So you put them on the right of the histogram.
      You have to check what parts of the image are at the right
      Two risks, image too dark, your main subject may be too under exposed, too light can cause color shifts, and sensors are not totally linear, Raw are massaged by cameras, and software generally don't work in a linear color space plus curves... are not linear.
      According to me ettr is fine when you have a lot of time and when the dynamic of your scene is moderate
      It's a good tool but it's sensitive to errors
