Thank you for watching this video on 25 technical photography terms that I think everyone (especially beginners) should know. Today, there's so much misinformation about how photography works: the science, theory, and technology behind how images are formed. In this video I wanted to provide not only the definitions of key photography concepts, but how they relate to each other, gradually explaining the photo-taking process as a whole.
This was my first voiceover, so let me know what you thought in the comments below. I plan to continue voicing my own videos now; it's about time my channel knows a little bit about me.
________________________________________________________________________________________________
I'm adding an errors and clarifications segment to my video descriptions because often in my research, certain things elude me.
Errors:
Lightroom & Photoshop are mis-labeled (at 8:30)
The Pros/Cons for Auto Mode stay on-screen for Shutter Priority Mode (at 9:33)
(for the Pros/Cons for Shutter Priority Mode, read the transcription provided above)
Clarifications:
ISO is not an "acronym" but a mere shortening of the organization's name.
"DOF does not describe the depth of the part of the image that is in focus. It describes the depth of the part of the image in which points are adequately sharp. Only objects at one specific distance are in focus, so the depth of points in focus is always 0. An object in a scene is in focus if all the light from a point on the object is refracted to a point on the image. With an optically perfect lens, this occurs only with points a specific distance from the optical center of the lens. Any points closer to or farther from that optical center have their light refracted into a blur circle on the image. The farther the object is from the distance at which points are are in focus, the larger is the blur circle. When the image is printed or displayed, a blur circle is either so small that the human observer cannot tell the circle from a point, or large enough that that the observer can tell the circle from a point. When the circle is observably different from a point, that part of the image seems blurry. When the blur circle is small enough to be indistinguishable from a point, it is called adequately sharp. The DOF describes that part of the image in which blur circles are adequately sharp. The DOF of an image depends on several factors, including the visual acuity of the observer, the print or display size, and the viewing distance. To promote comparability of DOF between images, standard observer acuity of 6/6, print size of 8" x 10", and viewing distance of the image diagonal are often assumed." - FingerPainter from DPREVIEW

No exaggeration: this is one of the best videos I’ve ever seen on TH-cam. Thank you.
Didn't came back to this channel since the ISO/aperture/Shutter Speed video in which I congratulate you for being the FIRST (and as far as I know the only) one into having the animation skills and the intelligence to do 3 rather straightforwards concepts into CLEAR explanations.
And here you have achieved that AGAIN.
I missed you.
Keep the amazing work.
Nice video...
Your voice is good...
Your explanation isn't boring...
Post many different terms about photography....
Thanks!
Nice presentation and very educational. I have learned another knowledge in photography.👍
Okay but this channel DESERVES way more views and subscribers with this kind of contents 😱🙌!
Maybe!
This video deserves 250k+ views. Accurate in-depth information that anyone can sink their teeth into and digest over and over as they learn the basics of photography.
Thank you for your kind words! I agree! I think this video is great for photographers beginner and advanced alike, and accurate information is definitely needed in order for everyone to "be on the same page" when we talk about photography.
Thank you for this. Clearest basic instruction video I've seen on here. And you have a pleasant voice.
Thank you so much for your videos! I am not new to photography, but def new to a REAL digital camera. For years I used an Iphone. Having a real camera is a bit overwhelming so I am binging your videos. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Most underrated channel
Your voice is great. I've learned so much from this video, and I've tried many beginning photography videos on YT, and this is the first one that I've really gotten the core concepts from, as well as the terminology. EXCELLENT! Your slides were super helpful, also. I took notes and will review them. I'm going to look for more of your videos. 👍🏻
The best explanation I´ve found so far. Great voice
Tahnk you!
You should read audiobooks... your voice is soothing
Thank you :), maybe some day lol.
This is my first time on this video, loved the voice and patience you had. Pictures, examples were good thank you I subscribed and I enjoyed this video very much.
Just ran across your channel while trying to put together a list of videos I can point people to when they are starting out or moving from their phone to a mirrorless or dslr camera. I am very happy to see that you actually explain what ISO is and what it does. To many people believe that it is sensitivity. I also cannot understand why anyone would give you a thumbs down on this video.
Thank you! Yes, the misconception surrounding ISO is one that I have encountered not in online articles but on TH-cam turotials and even in the three photography classes I have taken in college... it's not hard to understand ISO is just amplification, but most photography teachers don't teach it because it's "confusing," when really, saying ISO is sensitivity is more confusing IMO.
Apalapse, I'm glad you use your own voice now; nice to meet you! Since you asked, your speech pattern is very steady, which can challenge some people's attention span, especially nowadays, but you have a voice strong in character. Your dispensing of information is very efficient and effective, explanations concise; this makes every word worth hearing. What you say to be your opinion near the end I find objectively true, and the way you speak accentuates the objectivity of factual statements.
Mitchell, thank you very much for this feedback. I am sorry I didn't respond to your comment earlier, I am just getting back into TH-cam and uploading again after taking a bit of a break to focus on school and research. I really appreciate the kind words and I will be continuing to use my voice and later, my own self in my videos to deliver my content. Look forward to more from me soon.
You're welcome good sir. You're a gentleman and a scholar. I am definitely looking foreward to your future projects
Your voice is much more pleasing than the VAs. It has a natural feel, since it’s a normal voice and all that.
I've always missed your own voice and it was so good to hear it so continue doing videos like this.
the best voice, could not perceive other videos as good as this one
It is a very helpful video.
Got understanding of all the topics indepth.
thank you.!
And Your voice is amazing.
Your videos are packed with info and beautiful! 😍
Thanks, glad you like them!
this is the best explanation for a beginner, really helpful.
I hope the text presents many translations for other regions
other than that everything feels perfect
good job sir :D
I should add translations, good idea.
Apalapse thank you sir
I think this is the best photography video by far, super creative, love the cartoon icon type images you use throughout your video its no neat and to the point, I prefer learning like this than having someone teach it to me, I must say your robotic voice that you have created for your videos are also just so smart and neat! Thank you so much for your hard work in creating this video, I admire your genius brain
Wow, thank you!
@@Apalapse Remove the no its meant to be a so* WHoooppsssyyy!
I am just getting into photography and have been watching a lot of videos. I have loved yours so far, especially the diagrams. Many other youtubers just talk about the concepts but it really helps to see them! Nice work and the voice over is great 👍
Thanks man, sorry for just responding now. Hope all is well!
Your voice and videos are incredible, finally i understand the whole things in a simple way but in a professional way, you’re the best.
Thank you! I am glad you liked my video. Thanks for the feedback and for watching. Cheers!
I have a few questions. Learning the camera itself is like learning how to drive a stick shift - each clutch is different and each camera is different - I have had a few DSLRs what I've done is shoot a few photos in auto mode - to get the feel of the camera and then use those settings to start with in manual mode. Am I the only one who does this? Is this method a good one? Is there a better way?
I think your voice sounds wonderful! You don't need the voice-overs. You sound fine just the way you are.
Sounds like a good idea, i use aperture priority mode now rather than manual mode, as it helps me concentrate on composition.
YIKEES!!! How will I remember all 25 technical terms? Oh, I know...watch it over and over and over and ....Your voice is just fine!
This is amazing! I’m going to have my Yearbook students watch this video for their class with a companion worksheet as they start learning how to take good photos with our DSLR cameras 👍
Thanks a lot man ❤ when I saw your video I really saw myself knowing all of these technical terms.. I started learning photography 1 year ago and I knew almost everything.. Thanks a lot man.. You just explained my 1 year of hard working and learning photography in just one video ❤❤
You did it brilliantly in your own voice and since I have seen some later videos, yes it’s working perfectly fine💪
This was an amazing video! Thank you!!
this, this was really helpful, and easy to follow along with, thanks man
You have no idea how helpful are your videos, I love them
Glad you like them!
These videos are outstanding! Exactly the way I want to review photography terms and concepts.
Thanks a lot, Drew. The feedback is really appreciate and motivates me to create more videos like these. I hope things are well with you and good luck with your photography. Let me know if you need anything.
This was an amazing video, everything is well explained, I would love to see some more videos about more advanced photography techniques, just like you have done with astro
Thanks, I'm going to watch multiple times a day till it sticks, and yes stay with ur voice...sounds very authentic.
Thanks man, appreciate the feedback!
08:29 - Photoshop and Lightroom are labeled the wrong way round!
Your voice is great btw.
Ahhhh! Nice catch :)
Happy to help!
All other channels need to learn from you. I taught i was about to give up photography ❤
I am glad that you decided to stay with photography. It is encouraging and inspiring to hear that I helped you continue. Photography is certainly not easy, but I try and make it as easy to understand as possible. If there is anything I can do to help do not hesitate to reach out to me through commenting or directly. Thanks again for the kind words and I wish you the best.
This is the only video I have seen from you channel. I subscribed automatically after seeing the first two minutes.
Thanks for the sub and for the kind words!
Please continue to use your own voice. It's a sonorous, soothing, distinctive and clear instrument that you should be proud to possess. I'm jealous! Since I just bought my first DSLR camera, this particular video provided much desired and needed information. Many thanks for your attention to detail without getting so technical that you lose newbies like me. So looking forward to learning more from your videos.
Hi, Rob! Thanks for the nice words. I will be using my voice from now on, for sure. I think it suits the videos well and plus, it saves money on contracting someone to do it for me. Your story is really encouraging for me to continue making content. I really appreiciate when folks comment their success stories and how my videos helped; it's the thing that makes creating and editing these videos completely worth it. I wish you the best in your photography, take care!
I'm a beginner, and I start to learn because my father give me his old Canon A-1 and my grandfather's Canon GIII QL. I'd love to learn more from you sir.. Cheers :)
Best of luck to you! I'll be uploading videos every month.
Excellent and crisp informative video on Photography's must know jargons. Good voiceover Vincent. It would be great to hear your experiences with your voiceover and guidelines if any.
Excellent refresher. Funny, I know business casual channel changed the voice over and they got lot of hate because the other guy had a unique voice but I think your voice was very good.
I was looking for such video to know about the terminologies used in photography, just for sake of understanding... Thanks !! . The video has served my purpose
I'm glad it was helpful! Photographers use a lot of fancy and jargon terms so I think this video definitely helps those who may be confused by that aspect of photography.
Love your videos, as a beginner I find them very valuable, also your voice was good 😀
Best photography tutorial so far!
Thanks for the kind words!
I mastered camera basics ..today having finished this video . Thanks a lot man .. thank u very much . 🙏🙏🙏❤❤

Really perfect video but I don't get why you have less views
I love it!
Really helpful and very easy to understand 💯.. And don't worry, you sound great ❤
Thank you, and I hope so!
12 minute video but took me 1.5 hours to understand and watch the whole thing.
Great video! Keep up the good work. You´ve got a pleasant voice and your videos are informative and interesting.
Parabéns pelo completíssimo vídeo Vincent, sem dúvida um dos melhores guias para iniciantes
Thanks a lot for these highly informative videos. I knew some basics but learned a lot about ISO, overexposing, ETTR and how HDR works (and why it's needed) from this video. Your voice fits great btw
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for the compliment!
Excellent presentation that I will recommend to my students to watch, your graphics are clear and simple. Funny that, when I was learning basic photography, over 50 years ago, the term “bokeh” did not exist, the speed of film was usually quoted in “ASA” units ( American Standards Association). The concept of “SNR” also was not even thought of, it was just “fast films are more grainy”.
The advent of the digital age has certainly ushered in some new terms into photography that haven't been adopted quite yet, which has led to some misnomers and semantical issues, which while ususally just a technicality, have actually caused harm and misled photographers into making poor decisions. The term "SNR" which you say is something fairly new is definitely one that most photographers haven't heard before but one that affects all digital images. The same can be said with "ASA" ratings and "ISO" ratings, which aren't "ratings" per sey but arbitrary amplification settings in the camera that are a relic from the days of film. That's why I created this video: to help people realize where we are in photography, what terms are relevant, and what they all mean from a technical, accurate standpoint.
You should hire your voice out to do others' voice-overs. Very clear explanations and onscreen information. Thanks!
A little fast but you did a great job explaining everything
The video is awesome fundamental learning. Your voice is great man.
Thanks!
Wonderful video . Very clear explanations!

Thanks for the kind words. Take care.
Hi, I am a recent follower and I really do like your informative vids, this vid really made me learn new stuff about photography. You have a good voice, this was perfect for tutorials and if you do vlogs u can be more casual.
Thanks! Yeah, I'm thinking about doing some vlogs, but I'm going to wait until I start college this fall and everything settles down.
Tq fr the video. Lot of content explained in easy way nd simple way
Great vid, moved to fast for me as I was taking notes, but great info, thanks!
As an old professional photographer (using 35 mm SLRs and medium format range finders), I find this content excellent . . . even though my focus is on the translation of modern digital photographic terminology to old-fashioned film photography. The pre-exposure stuff is nearly identical; post exposure--including ISO--is another matter. I keep trying to relate ISO to the old film speeds. I think I have figured it out. Thanks for the info on JPEG and RAW: that will help me! Still, I have a lot to learn. I have subscribed and hope to hear more. Incidentally, I slowed this down to a .75 playback speed, and it helped (me, at least). Maybe a few others could benefit from slowing the flow of facts down. Anyhow, Thumbs Up!
Thanks for the comment, I'm glad I could help you out! ISO is definitely one of the terms that didn't migrate well from film to digital; it's something I had to "re-wire" since I was so used to the mantra: "ISO is the sensitivity of the image sensor, etc. etc." I will try and slow down the videos in the future, thanks for that feedback. Take care.
Thank you so much for making this video!
You're welcome.
@apalapse amazing content... my students are benefiting from your content... thanks so much... look forward for more....

Great video. Your voice is great!
I know a lot of terms as photographer I've been a photographer since 2013. F stop is aperture. Depth of field, automatic focus manual focus, focal length, leading lines, b o k e h just to name a few.
It was very helpful.. thanks.
FANTASTIC OVERVIEW!!! TY!
Thanks for watching! Glad you found the video helpful!
Nice video, your voice is great! No need to contract anyone :)
the best video ever thank you very much
love this, great channel
Great video. Nice and clear explanations and very useful for beginners (like me) who are more technically minded. My only suggestion is maybe to have more of a pause between changing the main subjects.
Also, I don’t see a link to the transcript in the description?
Both are fair criticisms. I will add the link in the description to the transcript now and yes, in future videos I do want to take more time to explain topics. I jump around only because some viewers complain that videos nowadays are made to fill a certain 10-minute timeframe and contain too much fluff and excess wording. I try to limit that and only give the audience what they need to hear, but I am still trying to find that balance.
At 1:15 , your f numbers are missing the slash mark to indicate they are ratios (and thus the higher the denominator, the smaller the aperture). It should be: f/1.4 f/2.0 f/2.8 etc.
nice! very helpful
now ready to capture
Awesome!
Amazingly informative.
Voice is good too..
Thanks!
Very informative video... Great thanks..
