Thank you so much! I have no women in my life who have these skills, and I am an aspiring homemaker and urban homesteader. I want to know all these things, and just recently learnt how to pickle and ferment veggies. I need my teachers to not be so technical, and use eyeballing, because I eyeball and "smell" as measurements. And in just under half an hour I have now learnt from you how to make a sourdough starter and make sourdough bread. Thank you for making the simple things in life seem doable!!!
Wow, that is awesome! Thank you so much for watching and for this comment!
TY so much for NOT complicating SD Bread making! I love your style.
I also want to say… I WISH I looked THAT good in the mornings! Your skin is beautiful!
Thank you so much!
@TheRoseHomestead what can you use if you don't have a Dutch oven xx
Oh my goodness. Thank you so much for your practical, stress free instructions that gave me a beautiful outcome and FINALLY able to produce a sourdough bread that I can enjoy and share with others. It’s been two months of stressful attempts at sourdough bread. I’m 74 years old and never too old to learn a better way! Our Lord’s continued blessings on you and your family. Thank you!
You are so welcome!
I have a question. I am looking to buy a silicone bread sling but see that most are rated only up to 480 degrees. And some have fiberglass in them. Ugh!! What is your experience with this ? Thank you so much!!
@annettemurray6914 the one I have is oven safe up to 5p0 degrees. I'm not sure about the other concern but will look into it. Here's the website for the one I use: www.breadsling.com/products/original-breadsling
Thank you so much!😊🌲
@annettemurray6914
I find a simple guide works best for me:when in doubt; don't. If you have no definitive proof of an alternative and you aren"'t comfortable with what is offered, then don't use it. At last until you find some form that you DO FEEL comfortable with using.
Mary has the most beautiful complexion! So flawless and radiant..🌞
Oh wow! Thanks!!!! Made my morning!
Mary I just want to thank you for demystifying sourdough for me. My family is enjoying a steady supply of your sourdough bread and they looovvveee it. God bless you and your household.
I said it once and I'll say it again, your videos have saved my kitchen. THANK YOU
Ma’am your teachings are unparalleled. The third time was a charm but after watching your videos, I’ve got it. Keep up the good work!
Wonderful!
I get more practical beginner information from you than others.
I did it. Came out great. You truly are an amazing instructor. I also started my starter with your video. Did take about 2 weeks to raise bread but ‘buddy’ is doing great.
Wonderful!
I love all your bread . Following you has been easy everyone else makes it so hard and complicated . So blessed for you thank you. 🙏
Thanks so much!!
You're a great teacher, Mary thank you very much for your patience. It's exactly at the speed and the technical know how that I can handle thank you.
You make this so much simpler than others. I love not having to have a bunch of fancy technology to bake with your recipe 😍
I finally made two loafs today. One was not so good, but the other was much better. Thanks Mary.
I took this recipe and put it in my machine. It kneaded for 30 minutes, rested for an hour, and sat in the bread machine for about 12 hours. Formed my loaf, and let rise for 2 hours, and was so good!
Oh, that's just great to know! Thanks for sharing!
Lol, I probably don't know the difference between good and bad sourdough bread. I just love my bread machine. I am 76 and have made bread by hand always, and love playing with this.@@TheRoseHomestead
I love my bread machine too! I might try it this way, thanks.
I 💕how down to earth and kind you are, and your Love of the Lord warms my heart! Thank you for making all of this easier for us! May God bless you and your family.
Your videos are amazing! Thank you for the positive attitudes and simplicity in teaching! Wishing you a very blessed day!💕
Thank you so much for being so detailed, as a beginner this is exactly what I needed
I’m so glad I came across your video. I just made my very first starter, I’ll be on day 3 tomorrow 😅
I’m so excited. I love how informative your video is. I’ll definitely be subscribing. God bless 🙏❤️😢
So nice to learn I don’t have to knead the dough. I make yeast bread no knead and it’s great. I don’t have a mixer - hand kneading is harder for my 87 year old hands. Thanks
Super videos. I have watched a lot and am still always confused. Yours are simple and easy to follow. Thank you so much!
Yep, what they all said, you make sense and that makes it so enjoyable to learn from you, I love you.
I love your videos, they feel so natural and real. A little mess goes a long way (in a good way!)
Thank you so much!
Oh, the sight and sound of that bread........it has my mouth watering.
Thank You
Looks easy enough, going to try it rite now.
Thank you so much! This was my first time making sourdough bread. This video was so helpful. My bread turned out beautiful and tasted so delicious that I had to make another loaf!
Amazing and thanks so much for making these videos. Can't wait to start
Finally! Simple recipe, and I love your laid-back explanations. Hopefully, I can try this recipe tomorrow night and bake the next morning! My loaves have been a little gummy. So im gonna try a tad less water. It's so humid here.
Thanks Mary; I’ve followed you from part one and now successfully created my first and second starters. Once I get to day five or six I am ready to make this loaf. 🎉❤
I just found you yesterday and am loving you and your videos. Sourdough is my current passion even though I’m pretty new at it (again) I made it a lot years ago but lost my recipes. You’re a life saver.
Thank you so much!!! I am filming a sourdough pasta video today and thought to myself, "Am I making too many sourdough videos" ha ha! I love it too!
@@TheRoseHomestead absolutely not.
Yay! I don't think so either ha ga
I followed your recipe to a T, and it turned out amazing for my first time. From your starter to which I made to your recipe. Thank you.
Awesome , l learned a lot .Thanks .
Great thanks so much so easy to learn from you I like simple too
That’s one beautiful loaf
I just made this today! My very first loaf EVER, thank you for making it so simple! It turned out perfect!
Thank you for your wonderful videos you are so soothing to listen to. I'm living in the suburbs now but I'm still trying to live simple, make my own food. I'll be making cheese next week. Thank you for your inspiration.
Beautiful
I’m new to sourdoughs and I just received my starter from a friend. I’m yet to bake my first bread and I want to do it soon. So glad I found your video, your easy instructions were fantastic snd your bread looks fabulous. Thank you I have subbed 🥰
So glad I seen this! I work a lot of different hours and find it hard to spend time on all that stretch n stuff...I'll start my loaf in the morning and will have time after getting home to do the rest...can't wait!
You’re awesome! ❤
I love your videos!!!
Thanks, I am going to follow your directions to make my first sourdough bread🎉❤
Love your videos!! Appreciate greatly the way you teach....thank you!
Thanks for watching!
Love watching your videos! I’m learning so much from you. 🙏
Thank you!
Thankyou so much for sharing your recipes. I have watched many other you tube videos on sourdough bread. I am going to try your method. God Bless You 🙌
Thank you so much ❤
Hello Mary, i love this bread how it came out. I really like your silicone red sling, I haven't ever seen one of those. I can see where it would have many uses in making different kinds of breads. I'm going to have to look into getting one of those. I don't have a Dutch oven which I wish I did. But I do have a loaf pan. I really wish I could have a bite of that bread You know it's a good loaf of bread in the video when the viewer wants to have a piece while watching your video. 😋 Looking forward to seeing you more of your videos.
Love your video
I love your table!!!
Me too
@7:35 - I don't like wasting that much! So I use an old expired credit card to scrape up everything. It is better than the dough scraper because I can bend it to match the inner curvature of the bowl. Hope this helps
What a great idea! Thanks so much!
@@TheRoseHomestead you're welcome. Now I found something even better. A soft silicone pottery tool that I use while throwing clay pots, which is even better! I picked up a three piece set online ..
Want to try it
That looks beautiful & delicious.
Thank you!
I started a new starter yesterday. Thanks for the teachings.
Yay! Good luck!
In my months long quest to learn how to make sourdough bread, I stumbled on your TH-cam channel, and I absolutely love your kind spirit and great information that you share!!! I was able to make this sourdough artisian loaf and it turned out pretty well, and I've also made your sourdough bread in a loaf pan. I have looked and looked for a sourdough video of yours where you show how to make a whole wheat artisian loaf because like you, I like to mill my own wheat. I couldn't find a video of yours showing how to make it (I'm a visual learner), so I went to your website and found a recipe for sourdough artisian whole wheat bread. I followed it to the "T" and it turned out awful! It was like a brick. Would you please consider doing a video where you provide a tutorial on how to make whole wheat artisian sour dough bread? If you already have made a video, would you please provide the link? Thanks for all your hard work in sharing your gift of teaching and love for all things made from scratch :).
Thank you so much! I actually have the whole wheat artisan loaf written on my board to record. I've been meaning to do it for a while. I will get that up in the next week if all goes as planned.
@@TheRoseHomestead Thank you! You really are the best teacher I've seen yet (and I've watched dozens of sourdough videos). I also love your music. Thanks again!
Thank you so much!
Thank you! I am a total novice and I was able to get it on the first try thanks to how easy you made it.
That's great!
Thank you for sharing this excellent video! It answered a lot of my questions and showed me the remedy to some of my problems with sourdough. 👍🏻👍🏻🙂
Oh, I am so glad it was a help! Thanks so much for watching!
Thank you so much
Thank you very much good video
Looks delicious
It was!
Made this today! I overproofed but it still backed up!! Also did your easy sourdough loaf!! Whoohoo bread for the week!!!
Hi there, just found your channel and after watching a few videos, I had to subscribe! I appreciate what you are doing very much...cant beat the American homesteader! God bless.
Awesome! Thank you!
Beautiful read. I like no discard method as I have no use for it really. I just learned there was such a thing from you
Made 8 loaves so far Mary. Thanks for your instructions.
Good day Mary; I am baking loaf number 11 today and coming back for clarification. I’m moving onto using sprouted spelt flour. So, maybe, I need to go to another of your videos. Thanks 🎉
I just Love everything about you!! Your music in the background was perfect "for me"❤ Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge. Im going to use this recipe with my 1st ever made sourdough😊 Prayers it all goes well❤
Thank you so much!!
So beautifully done I’m going to make one tonight because I’m waiting on my leven/sour dough starter to get bubbly good so yes thank you for this recipe
Let me know how it turns out.
Well, I am now on my fifth loaf and they are getting better and better. Every time I make one I watch this video lol my first loaf I didn’t put enough water and flour in the Banneton basket to make it nonstick so when I tried to take the dough out, it stuck and fell, but however, I persevered and baked it anyways. Low and behold it was still a beautiful loaf, and so delicious. I have tried for years and years and then I found your video, and I finally have success. I have given a starter to my oldest daughter, and she’s going to try her first loaf after Christmas. I also have given a starter to my sister who is going to do her for a loaf after Christmas as well. This has been a wonderful gift to me from you in a roundabout sort of way. I would love to say Merry Christmas to you and your family and thank you 🙏🏻
Oh, that's wonderful! I'm so glad!
This is my first attempt at sourdough bread. I’m 74, I’ve been wanting to make sourdough for a long time but I’ve never tried it. Started last night, followed your instructions. You make it look pretty easy, fingers crossed! I make regular bread all the time but I’ve never tried sourdough. I followed your starter recipe and my starter is doing great. My bread rise was perfect but it got stuck in the banneton basket. Ugh. I just started over. Hopefully, I’ll be able to bake it this time. I’m determined to get this right even though i feel pretty frustrated at this minute!
Hi, I just want to say thank you so much for your video and also thank you for not using a scale as I am totally blind and talking. Scales are very expensive so thank you so much and I am very excited to try your recipe. I hope to hear from you.
You are so welcome!
Using this video for my sourdough, so far so good. Fingers crossed for the result.
Update* turned out beautiful and tasty. Thank you so much!!
Oh my goodness…… absolutely stunning….. I want one of those dough slings…..never saw anyone use that……I think it helps not to deflate the dough……Mary, I’m on Day 3 for my starter…..asked a question in another video….not sure that it was answered……I have to check….. I subscribed 🥰
Thanks! If I missed the question please let me know!
I'd being watching your videos for a couple of weeks now I did my starter and today I'm ready to bake my first loaf of bread can't wait to bake it !! I just put my in the refrigerator I need to sleep few hours since I worked last night ! I will keep you posted!!
Yay! Yes, please let me know how it turns out!
@@TheRoseHomestead I'm not a expert on eating sourdough bread but was very good it don't look good but tasted good a bit too dense / hard but dinner was good! Thanks Mary I will be watching more i will love yo learn more !! You are very good ,simple and your method is my kind .. very forgiving of measurement !! God bless you!
@@miriantalbot6772 That's great! As you make more loaves, they will get better and better!
Thanks!
Thank you so much!
Mary, success!!!! It took 5 discards and 8 days for me to get the starter where it needed to be. Thank you for your fabulous videos, I have photos but don’t know how to send them to you. I know my next loaf will be better😂
Yay! I'm so glad!
I'm making everything you post with my discards, so perfect. Got my nerve up now to do the bread. Fingers crossed
That's great! I'm sure your bread will turn out great! Good luck!
My my sourdough bread recently has not cooked completely in the center, it feels tacky…..what am I doing wrong? I used 2/3 unbleached flour to approximately 1/3 WW flour. Plus I find it difficult to cut through that loaf…. I use à Henkel bread knife….with difficulty.
@franducross8168 the first thing is do is to get a thermometer that goes in my oven and make sure it's not too hot. That will make it rock hard on the outside and gummy on the inside.
I dearly love that bowl and your work table. That is MY era in the 50's with the table. My maw maw had one and I LOVE them! I found one of the bread cabinets around here local on FB marketplace but ouch, I don't have that kind of money NOR the room to put one. :( I love the old things!!! I also love watching your channel and learning. Got to get me a mill and some wheat berries. Do they sell spelt berries? Sorry I am so clueless with all this!!!
Thank you! My Hoosier cabinet was at my husband's home place in the shed covered in dust ha ha. I saw it and said I need that! Yes, you can definitely get spelt berries!
Thank you Mary! A new viewer here and I just subscribed 🙂
Awesome! Thank you!
My second video with you... thank you for making this easy for beginner bakers...me!! I don't have a Dutch oven so will be baking in a bread pan! I'm on day two of my starter...can't wait! Do you make pizza with your dough?
Here's my sourdough pizza crust video: th-cam.com/video/CGxIaO5Cs5U/w-d-xo.html Thanks so much for watching!!
Preheat the oven you keep saying that what do you preheat the oven at? Please answer my breads ready to go almost I got four hours left. Ha ha ha ha thank you for your videos. I love your videos. You’re so easy to figure it out. You’re to the point and I love it. God bless you and your sourdough.😊
425 degrees F. Thanks so much!
I like the simplicity of your process! I went thru the comments before asking… Is there a written recipe available?
This was from the Prairie Homestead. Here is a link to the recipe: www.theprairiehomestead.com/2020/04/sourdough-bread-recipe.html
Ok🎉
This was a great video. You’re a good teacher. I’m not sure if someone already asked, but do you have to make slits in the bread?
You don't have to but it may split in other places. If you put a slit in, you can control where it opens up. Thanks so much for watching!!!
Is your Banneton basket ceramic? Thank you so very much for your wonderful videos!!
No, it's a mix of wood pulp that is harder than the typical wooden ones.
I baked this bread yesterday following the recipe and was awful I had to throw it out. I used a stand mixer and I think my dutch oven was too small, the crust was way too hard. I am going to try again using my hands and a loaf pan. But thank you for your beautiful stress free instructions. I'll let you know how my next one comes out.
Can I use this recipe for bread bowls. I love this recipe I've been using it for a little while now and it works perfect every time!
Absolutely! That would be great!
Hi Mary, do you use warm water to add to your starter? Or just cool water? Also there’s no honey in it, st really taste good? I’m fascinated with your videos, love them.
I just use room temperature water. This particular recipe does not contain honey but it is a very tasty loaf. Thanks so much for watching!
I am really enjoying your videos. I jsut recently found you and subscribed. I was wondering if you can freeze this bread since there is only one of us that can eat it.. thanks
Yes, it freezes very well. Just make sure it is cooled completely before freezing. Thanks for subscribing!
Hi! Loved this! You said preheat to 450, but do you also bake at 450 degrees? Thank you
Yes, 20 minutes with lid on and 15 with the lid off.
What do you use for skin care!? Im almost 40 and you look so fresh and smooth! Also i love this video and it makes me excited to get my sourdough starter ready! Im using your method for the starter and im only on day 2!
Honestly, I use my diet mostly for skin care. I use all natural soap and lotion. I try to eat a lot of whole grains and good fats and drink a lot of water. Good luck with your sourdough! How exciting!
I finally had an ah-ha moment when my yogurt started making the best I've ever eaten. I freeze cubes of yogurt from a new batch. About 8 at a time. I use 2 cubes for each gallon of milk. I used to buy a new container of plain yogurt every time my 8 cubes ran out. It was suggested to do that by a yogurt making creator. Well, I finally decided that might be a waste of money. I haven't refreshed my yogurt starter in over a year. Gradually I noticed the quality of the yogurt improving.
So, the point is, the sourdough starter is going to improve over time, too. I am in the process of growing a new starter. I've always lost interest because of failure. This time I will give the starter the chance to really mature. I won't even care what the bread result is for the first year.
I made your sandwich loaf and it came out perfect! Question: Could I bake this artisan bread in loaf pan as well instead of Dutch oven. I made a few in Dutch oven and was wondering if it could also be baked in just tin loaf pan to get sandwich loaf?
Yes you can. I used to make this recipe in a loaf pan all the time. Just shape it into a loaf, put it in the pan and let it rise until it tops over the pan. Bake at 350 F for 35-40 minutes or until the internal temp is at least 195 degrees F.
Hi Mary! This may be my next bread to make with my bread pan. I'm assuming I still need to put the dough in a banneton. After I remove from frig & place it on bread pan, I do not need to score correct. I wanted to ck with you 1st before I make. Tks ❤
Yes, let it proof in the banneton. I always score mine so it doesn't blow out in the oven.
I love your blog. Wish we were neighbors. I have a question about which is better. Hard white wheat or hard white wheat sprouted or whole wheat unifine bread flour? Ty for helping. I’m going to try growing my own wheat and am pretty excited. Any info I need to know?
I prefer hard white wheat. It's my go to for most things. We grow an heirloom hard red wheat called Turkey Red and it did very well. Thank you so much!
Love it and going to try the recipe, can I ask what you call the paper you turned the dough onto before it went in the pan? Looks a bril bit of kit
I used unbleached parchment paper. I also used a bread sling which was the silicone thing. Let me know how it turns out!
@@TheRoseHomestead unfortunately the first one never turned out, the dough was far far too wet, either i got the measurements a bit out or it was the flour i used...will for sure try again though
So sorry to hear that, but, my first several loaves were awful ha ha. You'll get it!
@@TheRoseHomestead haha im sure i will
Love your bowl mary
Thank you!
@@TheRoseHomestead I’m going to make that beginner artisan bread tonight. Mah bread is whole wheat flour, can I add bread flour to that.? I was thinking, have whole wheat and have bread flour. What’s your opinion? Never made bread with just totally whole wheat flour. I usually use a blend.
That will work just fine! Let me know how it turns out. I may have to try it ha ha!
@@TheRoseHomestead I will let you know tomorrow good night and God bless
God bless!
Your sling looks like it is made for oval type loaves. I have been checking ones on Amazon Canada and only see round ones. So is yours actually round or oval type? Thank, love your videos, I am almost ready to back my first loaf.
I ordered mine from www.breadsling.com They have oval and round. I have one of each.
Hi! This is my first ever attempt at making SD bread.. I started the process last night but i have to go to work. Can I proof the bread in the fridge longer than a couple hours while I got to work?
Thank you for your videos. I need some help with my sourdough. I have a good starter ( finally), but I’m having trouble with the proving and baking. We live in Dallas in a home with central air/ heating. The help I need is with using an electric mixer with a dough hook and I have an electric proving box. Any help is appreciated. Thank you
When using a mixer with the dough hook, I like to knead on speed 2 for 8 to 10 minutes. This will develop the gluten for a much better rise. If I can help with anything else, please let me know.
New to sour dough making, hoping my starter will be ready in a few days to make my first loaf! I don’t have a Dutch oven, can I use a round ceramic casserole dish with a lid?
That should work as long as it is rated to 450 degrees F.
Hi Mary
I really need to buy a mat because my dough sticks like crazy to the counter top! do you have a link for your kneading mat? is it silicone? what size is it?
Thank you again for your channel , watching you is so relaxing and inspiring !
Regine ❤😊
Here's the one I have: amzn.to/4bXpTcW Thank you so much!
That looks great!! Is there a difference in taste or texture from not doing the stretch and folds? Is there any advantage to doing stretch and folds? Thanks!
I can't tell a big enough difference to do the stretching and folding. Now, if I'm using freshly milled flour, then yes, I either knead it or do several stretch and folds because it behave differently.
@@TheRoseHomestead thanks so much!! xx
Mary first of all I want to thank you for introducing me to your soughdough bread making. I have been making the beginner loaves for over three months now and each time they have turned out perfect.
This week I ran out of flour and my neighbour gave me some bread flour - I used my usual recipe, three cups flour one and a quarter water and half cup of starter. I don’t know what happened, I knew something was wrong, I just never came together, it was clumpy, a lot like cat litter. I did let it raise overnight but not much change. I continued on hoping for the magic to happen but it didn’t. It went straight from the oven to the bin. I’m assuming it was the bread flour, it had a strange smell too. My question is does bread flour have different qualities?
Yes, all flours can act differently. I would say for sure it was the different flour.
