I'm a middle aged "white guy" and ex law enforcement officer but after watching the Felix Mitchell documentary on BET I have a certain respect for the guy. People who use Coke or Heroin are no worse than the guy who drinks his whiskey or vodka daily. It's a personal choice, a BAD choice but a choice nonetheless... Felix Mitchell should have used his brilliant business acumen and opened a chain of liquor stores like "Bev-Mo" or "Liquor Barn". Same concept except for the taxes...
Wow! The crack epidemic in Oakland during the 80's was horrible. This dude sold all that dope to his own people and as long as he had some cash he didn't care about the young black kids that grew up without parents being around or able to help them with homework and prepare dinner every night because the father is in prison due to his addiction and the mother's turned to hooking to feed her habit, an entire generation flushed down the toilet thanks in part to this guy but hey, "Thanks for the love" right?
I met him in Leavenworth, Kansas prison when I was a teen. My father was doing time there with Drug Kingpin charges. We always went to visit my Father from South Texas and Felix always had visitors as well. His loved ones and us became close. Very respectful and friendly people! Our summer vacations there were always fun. Great memories even though they were locked up! Always looked forward to visiting my Father.

Criminologists named an effect after him known as the "Felix Mitchell Paradox" [3]-whereby after a major successful police operation (like the arrest of Mitchell) crime and violence both went up instead of down as one might expect. It is thought that Felix had such monopoly power in parts of Oakland that he controlled pricing and policed the violence of smaller gangs. When he was arrested it left a power vacuum and the smaller gangs started both price wars and shooting wars to fill the void.

That doesn't happen as much any more. Wonder how many of those young boys watching in awe try to emulate Felix Mitchell's life and get their shot at making it big, but are now dead?

@Xan81 Believe whatever you want. Felix Mitchell was a lowlife and he got sent to prison and died because he murdered to create his empire. So the fact that his business required him to kill the opposition means that killings are entirely relevant. As for the mortgage crisis, it was LEGAL for banks to make high risk loans. The mortgage crisis had predatory lending which was legal and outsourcing of jobs which is currently legal. It wasn't caused by fraud. It was caused by high unemploymen

His family use the drug money that was stashed away somewhere after he died to pay for those city permits. Whats the purpose in giving to the community when your poisoning it at the same time and killing those that stand in your way. Felix was killed by someone who probably wanted vengeance for a love one that he murdered. So much for Oakland's legendary hero.

@Xan81 People have killed others in corporate situations to be sure, look at the Billionaire's Boy's Club. But that is very rare and not the normal way of doing business. In the business of drug dealing, shooting people and getting shot at is accepted. I know I've lost friends to that business. You're now going into semantics about people and their bad choices. The mortgage crisis was not caused by crime, it was caused by people not being able to back loans they should never have taken.
Man I'm here reading the two of yous comments back and forth and its pretty interesting. I'm reading this "fool" Xan81's comments and it really is funny to me on how he is intellectually using words and his knowledge to try and justify the drug business. It's people like this that think this way that is causing Black and Brown peoples communities to fall. Sellouts to green and unknowingly to the man.
I support the access to information that paints the story of history. But we as people, and Oaklanders need to control the dissemination of this information and type of media in effort to detour our future generations from this type of life, not encourage. All our media talents & artistic efforts we have are strained on negative stories, news and figures, and we combined don't show enough positive figures with the media technology that we actually have control of....WHY?
Look at my four eyed cuzzin Pokey...I remember that walk...I miss that nigga...I didn't go to the funeral...stayed at the house...The 80's was the days...oakland was fun back then...at least one person out the crew might of had a gun...now..everybody in the crew has one...Genocide fa real!!

i only remember the flash and glamour.
@Caveman1006 He sure did! Death and destrution was what he gave. And this funeral was the most apalling thing I had ever seen in my life.
OAKLAND was not a Slum....at the time. He was...... not Correct. He could have done Better. He did what he ...... knew. What he was Allowed.
Peace
You know that dude at 1:25 ain't getting no girls with those ol' Stevie Urkel coke-bottle glasses he got on.

GROWING UP IN THE 69TH VILLAGE WE ALWAYS HAD MORE CLOUT THAN THE REST,SO THANKS BIG FE.YOUR TACTICS HAVE BEEN PASSED DOWN THRU OUR GENERATIONS. SO YEP YEP WE LIVE THAT MOB LIFE TO THE FULLEST. 69THREGGVILLS 1ST LADY
He must have made a lot if people rich.
Sellouts to green and unknowingly to the man.
nicee
Discription aint right. New Jack City was based on Supreme..
I support the access to information that paints the story of history. But we as people, and Oaklanders need to control the dissemination of this information and type of media in effort to detour our future generations from this type of life, not encourage.
All our media talents & artistic efforts we have are strained on negative stories, news and figures, and we combined don't show enough positive figures with the media technology that we actually have control of....WHY?
no. that's censorship/facism.
