  • Who were the Glen Coe MacDonalds? Why were they called 'MacIain' and what did they do to inspire such hatred among Lowlanders?

No problem, thanks for watching and glad you enjoyed it!
Nice spot with the music, yeah it fits surprisingly well in the grandeur of the glens eh? Hats off to Martin O’Donnell, Michael Salvatori and Kazuma Zinnouchi for letting us share their wonderful music in our productions.

The narrative is very similar to John Prebble's Glencoe which I happen to be reading at the moment.

This and the accompanying videos are based upon that excellent book.

Interestingly, the Halo music you play in your videos was produced by an American by the name of Martin O'Donnell. The O'Donnell clan were amongst the most heralded of all the Gaels of Ireland, with their territory Tír Connail (now known in English as Co. Donegal) going back as far as to the 6th or 7th century. The antiquity for their lineage was so well respected that upon exile in Spain, they were welcomed with open arms and would climb very high up the ladder. 19th century Spanish Prime Minister Leopoldo O'Donnell is a fine example - his ancestors were forced out in the 17th century.
So perhaps your music is a lot more relevant than one might first assume :)

Indeed, Marty O’Donnell is of Irish Gaelic descent and he’s done a lot of Celtic-inspired tunes. He’s very generous in letting creators use his work! :)

@@UtopiaPlanitiaStudios Wow, that's so kind of him, I'd be nervous approaching someone I admire so much for fear it wouldn't live up to expectations.
You put so much effort into these videos, I wish you had more views and subscribers, you really deserve it. Most creators focus on weekly or twice weekly 10 min videos. Perhaps a title like "Gaelic Scotland history" might attract more viewers? Or maybe this is more of a personal thing for you as your current subtitle saids, and you feel attracting a large audience might force you to compromise?

The channel is primarily on the Munros, so that won’t change but I might set up a second channel just for the history.

@@UtopiaPlanitiaStudios You must forgive me, I had to look up what the Munros are. I'm not sure it would be commonly known outside the mountaineering community here. It all makes sense now, the title for Scotland's highest peaks.
The fact that there is Scottish Munros, while Ireland is assigned the English title "Furths" is rather telling. It reminds me of the era when the so-called "Kingdom of Ireland" (United Kingdom only existing from 1801) was nothing but an English colony, while Scotland still had a Kingdom (with separate legal system etc).
I must figure out if there's any indigenous titles in Ireland for our peaks, in the Irish language. I'm loath to use English colonial terminology, even for something as innocent as hill-walking. So delighted we've adopted the metric system too, I don't like feet and miles.
