I am Scottish - I love listening to all your Scottish History stories. I went to school in the 60s and 70s I was taught nothing of Scottish history absolutely nothing.
Born and raised in Glasgow, (Kentucky) I can trace my ancestry to the Lamont clan. I've done some research into the massacre of Dunoon, but never found anything that explains it quite like this. Thanks for this! Love your stories!

I am Scottish and I love Clan stories. I believe that they are very important as many of these stories are covered up, or simply forgotten. They are all an important part of our history and we should remember them. I would also like to point out, as someone who is still in education, that we are never taught about any of our history in schools, save for the necessary Higher History SQA course which covers The Acts of Union and the factors pointing towards it. The course doesn't even cover anything after 1740 so no Highland clearances or '45-6 rebellion and I feel that the SQA picks the boring part of our history that dissuades many students of history from enjoying history. This is a very important channel Bruce because you are teaching us what we should be learning. I'll make one more example: So I'm from Musselburgh, and tomorrow is the anniversary of The Battle of Pinkie Cleugh and I will be doing a guided walk for it, but the school never told anyone about this walk. Do they not value history? Or do they not care, or not even know? I've had to discover Scottish History for myself and education hasn't helped with that at all, save for my wonderful history teacher. If you took the time to read this, Thank you!
You're not alone. I'm Canadian. I attended secondary school some 40 years ago. Our history classes were so boring that I swear I got more sleep in those than I did most weekends. I remember one particular history teacher who would drone on in a monotone for forty minutes, making you lose any interest whatsoever in whatever he was talking about within the first thirty seconds. I can only conclude that it was all calculated to discourage any REAL interest in history. And things are worse NOW than they were back then, as political correctness and "woke" ideology erase critical aspects of historical discussion in the classroom. Today, I am an amateur historian and historical re-enactor. I bring history to life, and provide memorable, impactful lessons in my nation's history to the public at every opportunity. Never give up... carry that historical interest of yours forward, and MAKE A DIFFERENCE.
I always asked throughout school when we would learn Scottish history because I grew up with stories from my Father about the clans, instead we were taught about the glory of the British empire. It's only after I left, studied on my own I realized there's a reason it's neglected as no Scot would ever claim to be a Brit once they knew the history!
Currently in my own time I'm reading about Scottish Commanders and you could see that they held the same values about caring for their men even when serving in The British Empire. Sir John Moore and Sir Ralph Abercromby both come to mind. And yes, the highland clearances were some of the worst acts ever committed by humanity. The effects are still felt today, although most people don't know much about them.@@onetimebear5681
I have news dear. Here in the US even if we are in university doing a world history degree for that time period neither Scotland or Ireland are included unless you do your master's and doctorate on it! Considering how many Scots and Irish (not to mention the Ulster Scots) that came over here to create this country you'd think that history would be important to us! Nope!🤨

I am from the US with Scottish ancestry. My ancestors fled after Culloden to the Colonies. I want whatever atory piques your interest.Youre a marvelous story teller and each topic goes way beyond what one can easily find without being in Scotland Keep the history coming,Bruce
Am Scottish tae and love all your stories about all history I learn something new every Saturday 😊 thank-you for your time .. and again like others here we didn't get taught our history at school on Scotland
I was born in NY state, I've done a lot of genealogy research. I've discovered that my 9th gr.grandfather was Sir John II of clan Lamont, he was killed there at Toward Castle, his wife and young sons escaped to Ireland and then on to America. Thank you for the history you give us. I must say this video is one of my favorite for obvious reasons ❤
I am a direct descendant of Andrew Lamont Young. 9th Great-Grandfather. Lady Mary Young saved her family by fleeing to Ireland with her sons, changing their surnames to protect their identity. She gave her Maiden Name to Andrew. His grandson, James Young, left Ireland in 1740 to escape a brutal years-long winter where over 2Million people died. James Young landed in Virginia and the Young Name was born in the new world.
With a related sept name in my father's side of the family, I went to visit the Cowal Peninsula on my last trip to Scotland... beautiful sea views! But not much to see in terms of Lamont history, except in the head of the hotelier, who had a whole scrapbook for the reunions! What a wealth lives in historians 🥰
I love hearing about The Campbell Clan, my family are Campbells so I’ve been brought up hearing about Scotland and clans but I’m getting to learn a whole lot more watching your videos, So thank you for your videos. Iain Ross Campbell 👍🏼
American here, trying to follow Mitchells and Laugheads back to pre-Ulster days. Found your series on the Wars of Three Kingdoms absolutely fascinating. But most of all, I enjoy the storytelling, infused with all the subtleties and nuanced observations. Let me tell ya a story...that is magical.
WAR OF THE THREE KINGDOMS tells such a story. Civil said all were mad. I love your videos. Please continue to do subjects that truly mean something for you. Cheers to your continued success.
I'm an American with a Lamont ancestor that was a survivor of this massacre. To avoid being pursued by the Campbell Clan he took his mother's maiden name (Young) and emigrated to Antrim in Northern Ireland. His family eventually made it across the pond to America a century later.
Robert Duff Green was a major landholder in early Virginia. He was granted over 120,000 acres of land in colonial Virginia. It is said that he was the male descendant of James Lamont Green, who changed his name and moved to Northern Ireland along with some brothers to hide from the Campbells. Robert Duff Green was also the nephew of William Duff Viscount Macduff through his mother's Duff family. William Russell, Robert Green, Jost Hite, and William Duff were all families that were related and had gigantic landholdings in early Virginia. 3 of the 4 were from Scotland. FIfe and Aberdeen areas I believe. Russell of Aden and Duff of Braco and 1st Earl Fife. Yes.
Andrew Lamont Young is also my ancestor! I'm very pleased to find this video about our family tragedy, and so pleased to find more family members here! Today we are strong & I Praise God for our survival!

I'm an adopted Scot, living in Fife now. I love to learning about history as so much of it still affects the present. While my eyes are focussed on how to make a better future it is important to understand the present, and for that one tends to need to trace historical roots.
English, who lived in Scotland for a few years, what I love about your channel is that you cover stories that are ignored by most other history sources.
Aussie here with a smidge of Scots ancestry, married to the daughter of a baby-boomer era Glaswegian. I've always been intrigued by Scottish history, but your videos are fabulous little chunks of knowledge, and your presentation is entertaining as heck. Thankyou for your work, I hope you continue for as long as you're enjoying it!
As a Hebridean-Scot, I love hearing about clan stories. It’s how I was raised, with my dad telling me stories on tales of my predecessors, the MacDonalds of the Isles, The MacGregors and the MacLeods. I’d love to hear more about clans I don’t really know about.
American with Scots ancestry. I love your stories. Also, I'm retired from the US Navy and spent the mid '70s stationed in Holy Loch, so this story about the Dunoon area was especially interesting to me.
I’m a Geordie with Scottish great gran parents from Kelso and Paisley love your twist on things Bruce so many variations on these amazing stories depends what you want to believe really More of the same please !
Scottish American here. I adore all things historical and nothing so much as Scottish history. Please continue to give us all of it! Especially Highlander stories!
Scottish born and bred until I was in my late twenties when I moved to the United States to work, and finally naturalized in California. I love ALL of your videos and history of Scotland and our interaction with each other and the rest of the world. Some stories and history I am very familiar with as an avid lover of history. Some are completely new and intriguing to me. Keep up the great work !!
@@Parker_Douglas LOL. It is great in the San Francisco Bay Area where I now live, as there is a large Scottish influence and community here with many places named after Scottish locations such as Ben Lomond, Dumbarton Bridge and many Glen (add valley name here) etc. I first arrived in Pittsburgh, PA and despite living and working in England for a while before arriving in the States, which softened and slowed my Glasgow accent considerably, most people still had difficulty understanding me, lol. I then moved to Long Island, NY where my time in PA allowed me to "adjust" some of my words and phrases so they could understand me a bit better. When I arrived in San Francisco it was like going back to the start and I'd have to repeat myself a lot, but everyone loved the accent and I'd often get people at work just calling me to hear me talk, lol. Overall, everyone in the US has been warm and welcoming to the accent, even if they to the dog head tilt a few times at first, lol.
I’m in Utah, USA. I enjoy all of your videos. To me, the clans are an important part of Scottish history. A clan episode once in awhile is appreciated. Although I don’t have Scottish ancestry, I’ve always been fascinated by the history and it’s my favorite place to visit.
I'm an American, and I love all stories of Scotland. I have ancestors who were Scottish and love learning all the history that my family lived through. You're a wonderful story teller, I love your channel.
I am English with a Scottish family background, I love the variety of stories you tell, definitely plugging another gap in the British history curriculum.
I can only echo what other people have said in the comments: you are a brilliant story teller. Crap dancer, but a brilliant raconteur. I love your uploads 🌞
I'm a neighbor from across the pond (two, if you count both directions) and I have enjoyed your history stories for some time. The history of Scotland is tied to the history of the clans, as you pointed out in parts of this video, and hearing a story about them now and then gives a context to many events that we would not have otherwise. Thanks, Bruce.
We are making a movie of this right now- I posted a link to our trailer but looks like it wasn't accepted. This is a very important forgotten piece of history & I am glad you are telling it!
Live in Michigan USA, of Scottish descent, (Scotts Irish to be honest) Love the history, clan stories, culture stories, mythology, just keep going....love it all.
i'm a 58 year old Fifer, who through your channel now know more than ever about Scotland, thank you for my new found education through your captivating video's,i love to hear the clan stuff, our real history
Excellent story Bruce! I believe that you tell these stories about the clans so we can all do something we should do every day but in fact, rarely do; learn something from history! Your angle on these stories usually has as much to do with the present as it does with the past and that's what I love about them! All of your stories are compelling this way. Don't ever stop telling them. The world needs to listen!
I’ve been waiting and hoping you would cover this story Bruce. I live in Northern Ireland and we think our family is from Clan Lamont. There are quite a lot of Clan Lamont sept names in NI. Loved your videos on the debateable lands and the border reivers, as our family also comes from that stock and your coverage of the peoples who made Scotland was fantastic.
US - My mother's family has been here since at least the 1700s. Impossible for me to connect to any particular clan or people. I have a lot of surnames in the tree from all around the UK (and maybe Ireland) - including Wasson (Scots-Irish most likely) and McGuire (Flight of the Earls). I guess when you're carving a life out of the frontier you can't worry too much about who your granddaughter is marrying. I guess the stories from the 1400s to 1700s catch my attention the most because it gives me a peek into the world that my ancestors all decided they were better off leaving. But mostly I just like good stories that make me think. So I really enjoyed the bit you did about the legacy of slavery in Scotland. I also smile every time I think about you finding out that you're English. ;-)
I'm a US citizen with Scottish ancestry. Most arrived in New Brunswick in the 1800's. Macintosh, Fraser are the most frequent names and many were born in Inverness or elsewhere in the Higlands. That's why Glencoe is so interesting to me. I love listening to your Scottish history and seeing the beautiful landscape.
@@lspthrattan Burce is a great story teller. You have to really love history to get down to the detail he does. I've always loved history and genealogy.
Scots born Aussie. I read once about a Highland clan who massacred a whole family for simply being homeless and trying to live off the land. I’m sorry it was some time ago that I read it, so I don’t remember the names involved.
My father's side are Scottish and my mother's English, I am interested in clans and Scottish history as a whole in the same way I'm interested in English history. I enjoy hearing about traditions and intricate details that get missed when people talk about history. I appreciate your stories as I know in years to come it will help me instill the interest in our hereditary history in my children. I call myself English but I try to connect with my Scottish hereditary as often as possible. Thank you for helping me acheive that
You claim to be half & half yet identify as English why is that ..? Do u feel English is the superior race ..? Yet your American very confusing indeed ,
I'm Scottish and I find these sorts of videos by far my favourites. Love a good historical tale with you out on the scene leading us through. Especially a thing like this, I grew up so close to where this took place and yet I've barely heard the story.
I'm from California with Scottish roots on my mom's side. I enjoy most all Scottish history especially when taught by Bruce. I don't think you can talk about Scottish history or culture without bringing in the clans, their feuds, and culture. Studying history in general can be just a hobby or pastime or it can be something which can affect our attitudes and our actions. Different people may draw different conclusions from it but hopefully some consensus emerges which leads to a greater understanding of society, our role in it, and how to not repeat mistakes from the past. Keep up the good work Bruce and eventually Ill make it there to see for myself how the events and peoples of Scotland have shaped the world, its culture, and hopefully its future.
I am of ScotsIrish stock and love the stories you tell. You highlight all aspects of Scottish history, from the rousing tales of battles won,nto the heartbreak of the losses, from the injustices of the highland and lowland clearances to uplifting tales of Scots that made a name for themselves in the history of the New Worlds. Some of these I have heard of, most are new to me but either way you bring a human touch to them all. Keep up the good work and lang may yer lum reek! 👍😀
The clan histories add great context, and are important to remember, but I've always felt history is a massive canvas and the details are best to add depth to the wider picture. I love how you use things like that to add nuance, which promotes understanding. Also, speaking as an English divel, it's great to learn more about history from these islands that otherwise tends to get lost in the general discourse. You're grand, big man 👍
I am scottish born up north, I now live in Paisley. It would be nice to see some scottish folklore stories and see the places they are attached to. If you are looking for some Halloween content, when you're near Glasgow you could come for a wee visit to Paisley to do some stuff about Paisley Abbey and the Paisley witches. See you at your Glasgow show, can't wait xx
Bruce, I love your stories about Scotland. I am American with Scottish ancestors in both my mother and father’s families. It’s hard to imagine how violent the clan fighting was, but the stories need to be told. Having a family name of a prominent clan doesn’t make you any different than any other family. The beauty and rich history of Scotland makes me long to see the place. Thanks for the stories and the smiles. ❤Brenda
I was born in Scotland and left when i was young. I've grown up in and still live in America. I love all of the history/stories you tell on your channel. The clans aren't really a priority in my continued learning, but learning about our ancestors and where they ended up after the clearances would be interesting.....p.s. Nice highland fling and the English comment 😅😊😂
Quite personal! My father's home town was Dunoon...and on his mother's side are Lamonts! When I was a little boy I went to school here for a year, and my father showed me an old tree with nails in it very high up. He told me that, in a massacre in the 1600s, a man had been nailed to this tree. He didn't even know that this had probably been an ancestor that was executed there! I had then a strange attraction to the Cowal Peninsula and now I can guess why...genetic memory?
I am American and just want to learn what Scottish people want to learn. I have absolutely no connection to Scotland except for a 2-week trip earlier this year. I watch whatever you put up because I trust you to be authentic to Scotland and its history.
Hi. Very interesting story. Your topics are fine. I am grand child of a Scot who was part of a Scottish expedition to Antartica in the beginning of last century. I was born and raised in Uruguay, along with my 4 brothers and sisters. attended am Irish School in Montevideo, Moved to Argentina 20 years ago. My two kids, Bruce and Fay study in a scottish school here in Buenos Airea, and they play and dance in the school Pipe and scottish dancers band. Being last month to Scotland for the 4th time. The four of us spent a wonderful time in Skye. Lovely channel ypu have. I enjoy it. And it is funny, as I sometimes turn on the tranacriptions, as some terms, accent and name of places are difficult to understand. And even ypu speak very clearly and paused, the automated transcription from youTube brings very weird inrerpretation. Seems that TH-cam is not yet ready for scottish accent. Haha. Cheerio! Martin Grierson
I am Canadian with Scottish background. I love these lesser-known tales of history that you don’t typically learn in any history class or most general history books. The personal stories you tell and how they influenced Scotland in unexpected ways are fascinating.
I'm Scottish and I love clan history. We're never taught it and only ever told the myths as truth. I personally find it infuriating and saddening the lack of knowledge the population has about such rich history. These are the stories of our ancestors! But they're lost in murky waters. It almost feels as if we're brought up to feel embarrassed about it, so most people choose not to take an interest.
As a kid from Glasgow I spent many summers at Tower castle on the Lamont land. Part of the residential schools system for us poor kids. It was there I learnt about the Lamont massacre.
All of your topics are interesting I’m American Visited Scotland in June I love Scotland and could feel the vibrations of the horror in many places It is a special place
I'm a Scottish viewer, and I think you are right about clan history perhaps being more of interest to international viewers. My favourite videos may generally been those about the Enlightenment / Inventors / Acts of Union etc. Would be nice to see some stuff on 20th Century and urban history though.
Me and my wife met you at your show in Dumfries last night ( I was the rather large gentleman with the Scotland top on ) just want to say before watching this. The show was fantastic. Our first time seeing you, won’t be the last.👍
Hello from NZ! Tbh I'm unfussed on "Clan Stories" (they're all interconnected & intermarried anyhow!) but I love the way you cover events & places that are 'important but not famous'. It's important that these things (and their context) get out there & known. Thanks for all your work!
I’m an American, first generation on my mum’s side. She was a first generation Canadian whose entire family were Scots. I really enjoy your style of history presentation-keep up the good work.
I'm glad we have you. You couch these moments in their emotional context that really is missing from a lot of dry history. Thanks for this, it's important to be aware that these were real people that died, ignobly, at the pointy end of unimaginable cruelty.
Please tell us about Clan Gunn and Gunn Castle. My grandfather was Granddaddy Gunn. He was Scottish and Swedish. I live in Florida, USA. I love your stories, thanks for sharing them!😊
I'm doing live shows in Canada in 2024. Shows in Halifax, Annapolis, New Glasgow, Moncton, Montreal, Perth , Ottawa, Toronto, Fergus, Seaforth, Calgary, Vancouver and Victoria. Most of the details are here www.brucefummey.co.uk/shows.aspx
I'd love to hear more clan tales- like the story of the MacLaines and MacLeans and their feuds and complicated family history, or the Kerrs and how a Norman Clan became one of the most prominent on the border- the Marquess of Lothian was the highest ranking noble of the Government side to die at Culloden.
An Aussie here with Scottish ancestry...I love all your stories. Interested in hearing about all the areas of Scotland and the history of them. Particularly interested in border stories (reiver ancestry) and Dumfries area.
Been watching fummey for a while now. Defo the best Scottish channel on YT (fandabidozi a close second). Personally i love the channel the way it is. I think that the telling of these stories from all throughout Scottish history makes the channel more about Scotland as a whole rather than about certain clans in certain times. I feel that this happens a lot with Scottish history and that it can lead to the misrepresentation of our history. Bruce manages to keep his channel focused on the history and for that i applaud him! mòran taing
I’m Scottish but live in Australia, I’d definitely like more clan stuff. We hadn’t any at school in the 70s and early 80s. Thanks for the opportunity. Cheers.

Bruce, I love your wee tales, and always some food for thought. I am still not sure why you don't have a national TV show promoting Scotland and its darker history. Thanks again
Keep talking, Bruce, I'll keep listening. Your storytelling speaks to my American/Celtic heart. Clan history is history. I love hearing how it all links up together. Good story. ♥️
I never knew half this stuff until I started listening to the Corries and looked up events they sang about. Being Scottish, I never learnt this type of history at school. So it’s great learning from your vlogs

Well said
Tis true. It never ends well.
An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.
BUT DO NOT GO BEYOND THAT, even if you go that far.
The saying is attributed to Confucious. The idea of an eye for an eye is really redundant as all you end up with is a society of blind people.

Thanks for telling this story Bruce, I've a,ways been surprised how little is heard of this story.
Unfortunately, I am not Scottish, but I love history, all kinds. Do thrilled to have found you. Anything you want to do is welcome. Yes, clan stories.
I have been able to trace my family back to the campbell clan. Love hearing your stories about Scotland!
Yes.
hey @purplereign84 I'm also a Lamont/Young American. Nice to meet ya. ❤
I too am a descendant of Andrew Lamont Young through my maternal grandmother.

Often hidden deliberately. If the Scots knew their full history, we would leave the UK very quickly!
Good video on here about the crash between the US and Russian submarines in 1974 opposite Greenock by Andy McLoone...look him up on here!
I’m a Geordie with Scottish great gran parents from Kelso and Paisley love your twist on things Bruce so many variations on these amazing stories depends what you want to believe really
More of the same please !
I am American and I love any and all Scottish history stories that you want to tell us! (I sound like a brown noser lol)
Can I ask what’s life like in California for a Scottish accent lol
British history does not predate the Act of Union.
@@matlachlannmacgregor-macle8735
They quite clearly meant the history curriculum in British schools today you absurd pedant.
@@matlachlannmacgregor-macle8735yeah it does, it's the history of the Isles not the British state.
Brutish Imperialism will last a thousand years.
My great great grandfather Robert Black was a descendant of the Lamonts. He was born in County Derry Ireland, but his father was born in Scotland.
As a Lamond listing to this tale has really been enjoyable and informative 👍 love the jig.
Glad you enjoyed it!
I'm from Texas and I will watch anything you do! I have been interested in Scotland since starting my family genealogy several years ago.
I also smile every time I think about you finding out that you're English. ;-)
Very interesting as usual Bruce. I think it would be good to hear more clan tales so that we can understand our past.
Me too. Mine were MacGregors and Cunninghams from Argyle, I'm pretty sure, so this one really interested me. Bruce rocks, don't he?
my fraser great-grandparents from Inverness settled in New Brunswick in 1912 a little later than that. i find Culloden stories interesting
@@lspthrattan Burce is a great story teller. You have to really love history to get down to the detail he does. I've always loved history and genealogy.
I'm a MacIntosh, I'm Scottish emigrated to Australia
@@mariemiller8740 hi distant cousin! Lol.
Glad you enjoyed it
I'm from California with Scottish roots on my mom's side.
I'm Scottish, and I love all the History videos you make. This was very interesting.
Thanks
I'm Australian. Stories of clans and royalties are definitively old-world, and I'm here for it. Thank you for the more modern stories too.
From South Africa, I love the Scottish history thank you. would love to hear more clan and other stories.
I'm Scottish and personally love clan stories! Love the rest as well!
Haha. Cheerio!

I am Canadian with Scottish background. I love these lesser-known tales of history that you don’t typically learn in any history class or most general history books. The personal stories you tell and how they influenced Scotland in unexpected ways are fascinating.
I hope you're coming to my show when I tour Canada in 2024

I'm Scottish and I love clan history. We're never taught it and only ever told the myths as truth. I personally find it infuriating and saddening the lack of knowledge the population has about such rich history. These are the stories of our ancestors! But they're lost in murky waters. It almost feels as if we're brought up to feel embarrassed about it, so most people choose not to take an interest.
They think by keeping Scot’s ignorant to their own pasts will keep us under the thumb .
@@Parker_Douglas Exactly. I do believe that is the case. We would all be for breaking the Union if everyone knew the true story. Thanks Bruce!
As a kid from Glasgow I spent many summers at Tower castle on the Lamont land. Part of the residential schools system for us poor kids. It was there I learnt about the Lamont massacre.
All of your topics are interesting
I’m American
Visited Scotland in June
I love Scotland and could feel the vibrations of the horror in many places
It is a special place
I'm a Scottish viewer, and I think you are right about clan history perhaps being more of interest to international viewers. My favourite videos may generally been those about the Enlightenment / Inventors / Acts of Union etc. Would be nice to see some stuff on 20th Century and urban history though.
Been waiting for this one, thank you.
I appreciate hearing stories of the clans. It makes family history research much more interesting to the younger generations.

I live in America but I come from Scottish Protestants who migrated in the 1700's. I love hearing about all of it. I love your videos.
My paternal great grandmother was a La Mont my maiden name is Monteith so found this very interesting.

An Aussie here with Scottish ancestry...I love all your stories. Interested in hearing about all the areas of Scotland and the history of them. Particularly interested in border stories (reiver ancestry) and Dumfries area.
A really great presentation showing how twisted history can be in relations of groups of people well done Bruce and the dance was enjoyable as well
Been watching fummey for a while now.
Cheers.
Love this one Bruce! Exceptional in every way. In Canada, we'd call this one a Gordy Howe hat-trick! Keep the clan stories coming. ❤
