The Viking Invasions of Ireland, 795-1014: The Complete History

- Over the course of the ninth and tenth centuries, the Viking Age was fully aflame across northwestern Europe. While the Danes assailed England and France, Norse attacks made Ireland an almost perpetual battleground. Vikings seized control of ports such as Dublin, Limerick, and Wexford, where they established powerful strongholds and thriving trading hubs. In response, Ireland’s kings grew more militant and more united under the high king, who would take the fight to the Vikings. We’ll explore the complete history of Ireland’s Viking Age, from the first raid on Rathlin Island in 795, to the epic Battle of Clontarf in 1014, in which Ireland’s celebrated High King Brian Boru faced the forces of the Norse King of Dublin, Sihtric Silkbeard.

As an Englishwoman I had no idea as to Irish history. Thank you very very much for this education
Thank you!
What you need to know as an Englishwoman is that the Irish always stomped the Vikings and the Vikings turned around and always stomped the English. You English were owned by the Romans. Then the Irish owned you and then the Saxons and finally the Vikings. Then the Normans completely obliterated whatever was left of your mongrels

Wow, what a dramatic saga. It’s good to know more about Ireland’s fascinating societies. In many other videos on this platform, the whole island is simply written off as “a land of petty kingdoms” and goes no further. Thanks for sharing this.
You want fascinating Irish societies? Google the Irish hellfire club. Be careful though, Alot of it is kept hidden for a reason.
That’s what everyone does to everything non Graeco-Roman.
The Greeks sources at least respect the Scythian Tribal Confederation system. That’s the model that’s used predominantly between the Bronze Age collapse and the rise of Alexander. “Petty kingdoms” but that’s such a gross simplification of a much more complicated familial arrangement system. It’s kind of disrespectful, to be frank. I’m with you.
Graeco-Roman historians seemed to never acknowledge the successful tribal system all our western nations thrived during, especially us Celts
The only thing better then a fight, is another fight.

As a kid in the 90s/early 2000s, I didn’t care much about live-action television, but give me a documentary or docu-drama on flower gardens or medieval warfare, I’d be glued to the screen. It’s not only insightful but comforting to me. Thank you very much.
Also, that little theme of yours, the plucking of a guitar or lyre? Goes great with the scenery.

Being part Irish from my dads side, holding the name of Murphy / Murchadah / Sea Warrior, it is nice and interesting to see how my Norse ancestors moved into Ireland as most of this information was not known to me, well done team and very informative
Excellent documentary. Thank you for sharing this.
The Viking invasion of Ireland is exaggerated.
The Vikings were only able to secure toeholds in Dublin, Waterford, Limerick & Galway. They were tolerated by the local kings because of the trade they brought.
They were prevented from securing any significant toeholds in Ulster due to the ferocity of the Ulster clans.
It isn't only The Viking invasions that's exaggerated - there's much of Irish history that's been re-written by Christianity. Brigid of Kildare for instance - she _never_ converted to Christianity, in fact fought tooth and nail against it and the people [Pagans] that supported her continued that fight long after she died. Christianity wasn't put upon _us_ by the sword, no, because we resisted it where everyone else submitted. It was put upon us slowly over the course of centuries.
Where do you think the story about Brigid's magic cloak came from? Do you really think God expanded out her cloak to cover such a massive tract of land? We held this land by way of force. She went to speak with that king but he didn't 'give' her anything - he was simply made aware of what he didn't or couldn't have. Brigid was a tree worshipper, The Oak - that place on the hill there in Kildare, it used to be covered in Oak trees and was a very special place to Pagans. She would _never_ have cut down those trees and built a Christian church out of them and the fact that Christianity says she did tells you all you need to know about it.

Imagine just the sheer amount of violence in those battles
It hard to imagine how brutal that kind of fighting would be. The pain from a wound from one of the weapons used during that time frame would just be incredible. I dont know how these people could go and fight a war for some Lord whos land isnt even my own.....
Status quo for an average man would have been to toil in the field or tend someone else's cattle until death, with probably few or no marriage prospects and likely no inheritance. As a soldier you could earn wealth, titles, land, and potentially marriage prospects. You could also die horribly but death is inevitable anyway.
@@theamazingempiricist
They lay people didn't really fight in Ireland, Provincial Kings would have had several Clans who's hereditary roll was to supply warriors, all of the Nobility would have military training.
Other Clans like the Mac Egans would have supplied Brehons (legal experts) this is the case for many important roles in Irish society.
It eventually changed under Shane an diomas O Neil, he began training the lay people in the 1550s . Hugh O Neil did it in the 1590s during the Nine years war.

William The Conqueror banned slavery in England. It was banned in his native France earlier. It is not much of a surprise the French speaking Norman English stopped slavery in Ireland. They did replace it with Serfdom in the Dublin Pale though.
The Christian missionaries did that
Unless you mean the vikings
The English do indeed have a long, long history of acquiantance with slavery right up to the 19th century. A good 1000 years-worth or so.
I've seen people write shite like this to justify brutal regimes. The Kingdom/Parliament of England and the British Empire's history in Ireland was brutal. It didn't stop Cromwell killing somewhere between 20-40% of the island and shackling tens of thousands and sending them off to Plantations in the Caribbean.

I first learn about the Viking Invasions of Ireland from the movie, Secret of Kells.
I still feel or remember the fear and hatred that my ancestors felt for the Vikings.
Today these aggressive raiders have been made appear like heros but the reality for our ancestors was that they were a terrifying enemy and they had to watch out for them.
Yep ur ancestors were easy targets for us
I hope you don't fear and hate today's Norwegians because of what Norwegian Vikings did a thousand years ago in your country. I myself totally agree with the silly idea of some sort of "hero"-narrative, they were a brutal and merciless people that didn't come to Ireland for anything good, but mostly for slavery and set themselves up as rulers, in a time when Christianity in Ireland had developed the island into the center of Christian civilization, and much of what survives of ancient texts could have been completely lost if not for the hard work of the monks, since libraries in the rest of Europe at the time was a died out phenomena. The monastery societies also spread all sorts of other knowledge and technology previously unknown all around the island, and greatly blessed the people. Also the spread of Christianity happened because of Irish missionaries all the way south to Italy again. Only for the pope in Italy to bless the Normans and how they came and set up the rule that continued the rest of the millennia, inherited by the English.
Far out if we descend from the Irish most of us have Viking blood in our veins anyway. Ireland apparently has the highest rates of PKU globally. A genetic condition that is inherited from the Scandinavians. Of course when it showed up in my family I knew nothing about the Irish Viking history. Not to mention if I was to hold a grudge against a race for their behaviour to my ancestors it would be to the English for the atrocities they committed for centuries and for lying to the Irish in world war one. Too many Australian boys fought and died for Ireland and their freedom and broken promises. A hundred years ago now
Good work
Comprehensive and informative - a lot of facts in a relative short video. Thanks

How interesting the story of how Torgill! That is because this assasination (beardless youths disguised as women) is identical to the story in norse mythology on how Tor (or "Thor", as you would say) got his hammer (Mjølner) back, after it was stolen by a jotun (one of the "bad gods", in a way, the "Jotun" were the enemies of the "æsir" - the norse gods), named Trym. It is called "Trymskvadet" (the poem of Trym). According to the story, Tor disguised himself as the goddess Freya, and agreed to marry this jotun (the jotun, Trym, wanted Freyas hand in marriage). And then, as Tor found his hammer on the wedding night at the estate of the Jotun, he used it and killed them all. I´m wondering if there is a connection between these to stories? Had the monk who wrote down the story on how Torgill was killed, heard this norse story?

An informative and well presented historical documentary, until the end. The Anglo Normans were also proto Vikings, with a common ancestry with the previous wave of Viking invaders. That shared ancestry, combined with the existing Norse presence in northern Scotland suggests that the rivalry of clans/macs was continuous and multi layered.
Mankind does not change much over thousands of years. It was battles for resources then and now.

Christianity was in Wales long time before, st Patrick was Welsh
christianity was in Ireland long before the Irish raiders captured Patrick from Britain , Patrick, not his real name then, was a pagan at that time as was most of Britian. there were at least seven bishops of equal stature in Ireland at the time Patrick came back from Rome, he was given the honour of the first bishop as he was in Rome. the irish misioneries first established the Irish Church in the North of England in the seventh and eight centuries, there was a very informitive documentry on English TV lately which tells the story of the Irish Church in the north of England and how they brought Christinity to the Island of Britian , the Welsh were still very much pagans and thought the cross was for drying their clothes on. Patrick comes from the latin for patrician, the Scots and the Welsh do not like the idea that the Irish Missionaries brought Christianity to the Island of Britian, if you want to investagate, just ask the English, they teach it in their Universities, yours St. Malachie

really low considering, I live a newer metro us city with more people .
So many kings... Any idea how many people it took to call it a kingdom??
The Gaelic idea of a King was quite different then that of a "Rex" in the rest of Western Europe. Political power in medieval Ireland was based on controlling cattle and maintaining the allegiance of lesser clans, so I would assume it would be up to wider society to recognize someone as a king or not. There are examples of different members of prominent clans like the Uí Nialls declaring themselves High-King of Ireland without actually controlling most of the island.

"In the early stages of bronze metallurgy, arsenic was initially alloyed with copper to form “arsenical copper” otherwise known as "arsenic bronze”.
This revolutionary smelting technique is first evidenced in the Near East at Iraq and Turkey between 11000-8000 BC. An abundance of native copper was discovered near the site of Catalhoyuk, Turkey dated to 7000BC, with further native copper artefacts found at other Turkish sites such as the collection found at Cayonu Tepesi which included between 50 and 100 objects, consisting of beads, hooks and awls. By contrast metallurgy in Europe commenced later with the earliest evidence of copper smelting discovered at Belovode, Serbia dated to 5000 BC...
Unlike most parts of Europe, Scandinavia’s chronology doesn’t include a Chalcolithic period, as the Nordic Bronze Age (1700-500BC), immediately succeeded the Nordic Stone Age (ca.13,500-1700 BC)."
