How To: The Lead Hand Hook | Stephen Wonderboy Thompson

  • *SPOILER ALERT* In this weeks episode of Technique Tuesday I go over a technique that was used by UFC 241's Main Event, Stipe Miocic! The UFC Heavyweight Champ used the lead hand hook to the body to open up Daniel Cormier's guard which allowed his right hand to get through. Another variant of the hook was used as a counter by up and comer Sodiq Yusuff to drop his opponent leading to a ground n pound stoppage. UFC 241 was an amazing card. Be sure and check it out if you haven't already! Thanks for watching! #UFC241 #CormiervsStipe2 #MMA

This is amazing, I haven't seen too many karate schools share hooks. I know a kempo practitioner and they have this hand book filled with philosophy that keeps them humble to every style even though they retain their original stance. I already feel that this will be the best martial arts resource on the internet after a few years of developing its library. Your open mindedness and entertaining ability to teach confirm this feeling. I'm grateful to be a student

I trained Kenpo hard for almost two years at one point. I have to say that their focus on functional hand strikes was impressive. I've mentioned before on how much I respect Thompson in the ring, but I love how he is willing to share what he has learned with the world as a martial artist.

best way for giving the hook power is to fall on the direction your body is facing with it, say move like if falling forward on your face, that gives this punch TREMENDOUS power if you hit with your arm past your chest rotating your front heel out.

from the point of classic boxing , everything you do look like a rookie in the first year...dont get me wrong maybe its ok for mma , but in boxing , shoulder is to deep (which may is ok ,cause of grabbling parts in mma) your stance is to wide (maybe ok for throwing kicks)...but these are points well which we may can skip ,according to mma ...but the hook sir ,no iam not with you ... first of all the hook technique you had , is for the inn fight ,your explaining of well its may is ok if some turn there hand ,but this leads to fractures, is so wrong, from the view of a boxer ...this hook technique is for the normal range (medi ) because using your technique will lost power the further someone stand to you ...your hooks will lead to good results in infight situation , at medium you may feel fine ,without noticing your lack of power , in long range jeah you noticed that your kind of style loses power...now here is the magic trick , do a full turn with your hand , so that your thumb and knuckles show downstairs...this is called baseballbat in my country , its the 3rd technique you getting drilled ,if you just do boxing , it feels awkward for beginners and rookies (like any kind of hook do at the start) but if you getting used to it , your hook on long distance becomes a killer , sparing you gas for jump in or close the distance techniques ...if you ever try to get even better than right now , try it out ,train for about 1-2month and you will be fine ...cheers

Just out of curiosity, have you ever trained any Chinese martial arts? It's just interesting to see your long hook is very much like a Shaolin "horse stance hook", and the rotated hook is another one very common to various old Chinese styles. Not that it doesn't appear elsewhere, I just find those kinds of parallels interesting :)

video is good I almost skipped over bc i know I have good lead left hook since I practice orthadox but what u did help was with my moving forward lead hook I would use it more on the inside and not to much power from not having it in close (I'm a shorter guy so I don't have that reach for a hook so I always drilled it on the inside not really using it to move forward or covering distance) and my elbows weren't straight which now as soon as I get home I'm practicing this on my bag!

Is this different than just a boxing hook? When i was doing a boxing tutorial the guy was saying its alot in the shoulders, and its like you’re drawing a circle with the shoulder and practice first by throwing the elbow like the hook then once you have motion extend the hook. Hahaha ps your brother with the weak knees at the end.
