Holy shit even Yahtzee loved Undertale?!
Fuck, now I do have to go play it.
Here's a quick word of advice:
Play the game without convening your experience with ANYONE who has already played it. Trust me, people who have beaten Undertale are all too happy to ruin it with tips and spoilers, and it's best played as blind as possible. Even Yahtzee refused to do a full review because he thinks saying anything about the game's content will be an unnecessary spoiler. Keep playing, and ignore anyone who's already played it until the game has nothing more to offer you.

+Zapsie An addendum to that is as well as going into it blind in a content/spoiler sense, you should also try to lose any preconceptions you get from people who either overly hate it or love it and label it "pretentious hipster indie trash" or "Dah best game evar!!". (Not saying the game's absolutely perfect, but a lot of people seem to throw a lot of hate at it for personal/preferential reasons and what it's associated with rather than take it on it's own merit.)
+DastardlyGaming Technically speaking, it's not based on Earthbound. However, Earthbound is a very big inspiration for it, and if you like Earthbound, there is a very big chance you'll like Undertale.
Personally, Mother 3 was the best RPG of all time (in my personal opinion) before Undertale came along and wrecked it (in my personal opinion, wanna get that out there as much as possible so insane people don't take this the wrong way and I end up with unnecessary hate mail again).
Somehow ... for every Undertale fan mentioning the game somewhere out of context I see about 2489 comments telling me how obnoxious the fanbase apparently is.
So yeah, Undertale fanbase haters are worse than the Undertale fanbase.

I kinda feel the same every time someone mentions Tumblr as some kind of boogeyman dragging everything down too. I use it and I just find nice art and friendly people; imagine that, its a social platform you tailor to your interests where you can block or follow whoever you want. How the heck are they finding all these supposedly terrible fans unless they're just digging for it?

+Vincenzo Paollo Grieco He's criticized popular games before. He just didn't find anything bad with the game. Honestly, I can't think of anything either, other than "graphics" but that would be a massively stupid thing to point out for a game like that one.
It's got atmosphere, varied gameplay, humour, actual emotion and a reasonable amount of character development. It's got interesting characters and different KINDS of humour (stupid humour, puns, silly characters, etc) It does a whole lot right and very little notably wrong... so it's hard for yahtzee to make one of his usual reviews.

KuroroSama42 For me it does not have a good replay value, and i think that since that something you only see if you obessive compusive play the game, so i think he did not pay atention to that if he did he say something to the lines of "i would not want to replay the game just for the sake of the characters saying "heve you see this before?" or for Sans make me go back three times so that he give me a key to a room where the fan base can jizz in the pants for theorys about him", and how annoying it is to begin the genocide run, i know for both the things i said a "the game was not desing for replay value or for the genocide run" can be used as a reason, but still is for these resons i give Undertale a 8,5 out 10
Finally started playing Undertale. An hour in and i've already went "awww," almost cried, and laughed my ass off.

The ending of metal gear solid 3 and metal gear solid 4 made me almost cry.
I laughed, got true pacifist, cried, looked on internet for way to help asriel, failed, looked up One by One on Archiveofourown, and made my peace with the series. You're welcome.

my one gripe with undertale is the same as Jared's: that it was spoiled for me by the people who already played it. I wish i could have gone in blind, i probably would have loved it more
I'm lucky in that I had no friends to spoil it for me, and I only heard of the game when it became hugely popular, and as a result I recoiled from it, because I react negatively to things that are overly hyped. So by the time I finally _did_ look into it, it was about a year later, and nobody was talking about it enough anymore to risk spoilers, so I got a totally blind play of it, and it was glorious.
I sort of screwed the pooch and spoiled it for myself by watching a play through. I realized my mistake too late. :(
I actually managed to go in blind. Somehow. I'm really bad at keeping spoilers away from myself since I actually look them.up.

+dave nic I don't know...I actually enjoyed the experience after the non-buggy version was released. I think the batman-feel was much more enhanced with the vehicle since it's a signature. It also incorporated stealth mechanics into it. The only point I agree about Yahtzee on is the story...but I really don't play Batman games for the story and I'm not sure why he would either.
After playing all the current ones, I went back to Asylum to see if it has withstood the test of time. Suffice it to say, I was not impressed and am glad it evolved into a game like City.
***** I thought the batmobile combat mode was overused and batman has brilliant stories the games should to. If you like batman at all you should read batman arkham asylum serious house on serious earth what the first game was based on great comic. (just download cbr reader and a cbr of the comic). PS killing joke's good too.
+Hitome I thought the whole Batman feel was ruined by the inclusion of the Batmobile. It really just didnt have a place, and it added to errors like blowing up unmanned tanks (if Arkham Knight put a person in them, then what). Tbh the whole game wasnt as good as the previous ones including Origins.

Ah yes i remember playing Undertale soon after it came out and it basically took my soul for a few months. (Not literally mind, I never got that ending.)
Then Deltarune pops out of nowhere, reawakening my love for all things cute. So inevitably I replayed the pacifist ending again and started subconsciously auto-writing fanfics in my mind, where *[Hyper Spoilers]* and *everyone* lives happy ever after.
"Forget about me", huh? Well Toby if you wanted that to mean anything why does the collector's edition include *[spoiler]* and why does Deltarune exit?
Regardless, I look foward to chapter 2. All hail Toby Fox, God of Hyper Feels.

Has anyone else found it funny that people bash the Undertale fanbase, more than we actually see the fanbase? It's like the Internet went into critical levels of hate toward any online community, without any real cause.
As for the game itself, it's really worth a go. The best part of singleplayer games, is that even if the community is shit, you can still enjoy the game. ^.^

The people who didn't like the game are in the distinct minority, and everyone else is going apeshit over it, won't stop talking about it and are flooding the internet with it, with keyboard warriors ready to rip to pieces anyone who dares to claim they dislike their game or say it shouldn't be 10/10 game of the year and who think the only reason people don't like it are either they are contrarian hipsters or they just haven't played it. Thank fucking God, I'm not the only one who was dissapointing with "The Beginner's Guide". Thowing that arround with the same price tag of The Stanley Parable, and yet having NO replayability, even less story, and literally nothing to do but run forward for an hour and a half (when at least The Stanley Parable had a ton of jokes and babies burning to death somewhere in the middle) is just pathetic and felt like a scam.
But at least I got my refund, jokes on the dev.
I think The Beginner's Guide is one of those games that's only going to hit home if you can relate to it. My life has been pretty good as lives go, so I doubt that kind of introspective game would really be my kind of thing.
+BadassFreeman Damn, there's not liking a game, but Jesus. The game has gained plenty of praise (including from Jim Sterling, whom I trust), ad you got your refund, so there's no need to slam it.
Also, it should be noted that only games Yahtzee has reviewed on Zero Punctuation are viable for the list, so whether the game didn't make the list because of that or because he wouldn't have liked it anyways is something we'll never know.

Yup, that's basically Undertale in a nutshell.
Regarding Undertale: Meta-narrative is where art goes to die. Art concerned with itself is parody art. Video games are increasingly focused on providing a meta-narrative, games that in-narrative consider themselves games , like Stanley Parable. Such games can never have as much impact as Journey, Shadow of the Colossus or Silent Hill where the in-story narrative is central . Undertale is an exception. It does it so well because the meta-narrative is part of the story, not the story itself. Undertale uses meta elements to create feelings of confusion or dread or surprise, elements that directly tie to how the in-narrative storytelling is delivered. The narrative is character driven, not driven by art-introspection.The world is video-game and the characters know it but the world only sets the rules of the narrative, not the narrative itself (Much like the .hack// series but better). Undertale is great.

Just saw a campaign ad called "The Life of Bryan," that used the same ragtime music as the "Top 5" in this video. Instantly improved my mood.
It is actually kinda weird to go back and look at media that refers to James Stephanie Sterling as "him".
I was surprised to see Elite: Dangerous rated so highly...then I remembered that I'm so keenly aware of its flaws because I have somewhere between 400-500 hours in it. Much of that time during Gamma or right after release when the flaws were much closer to the surface.
Nearly a decade later I still find myself occasionally thinking, out of nowhere, "... IN SWINDON!".
Undertale was the best review so far.

An American would look at the graphic and say "A house made of bog rolls." I guess it's the difference between "a house made of boards" and "A house made of wood."

ive never laughed harder at a zero punctuation than the undertale review, that was brilliant
so many people getting their panties in a twist because Undertale and personal opinions exist in the same universe. someone says they like Undertale, they get bombarded by hate and people who say they didn't like Undertale get the same, but a lot of the people who have a negative opinion on Undertale say "from what I've seen, (less than an hour of gameplay) Undertale is as shitty as it's fanbase". idgaf if you don't like it, as long as you're not being an ignorant twat about it and give some real criticism and not " it's shit ".

I enjoyed Undertale, except for one thing:
Undyne. I just can't find a way to interpret her that doesn't reflect poorly on her. I know why people like her, she's entertaining as fuck, but she's a horrible person whose atrocious personality is glossed over for the sake of comedy, and I find her insufferable.
I don't know what's so atrocious about her, really. She's incredibly prideful and has a love for victory and combat bordering on the fetishistic, but there isn't anything about her I'd call terrible. She tries to kill you because she's blindly devoted to Asgore's cause above all else, they being such good friends and all.
Zapsie She's a violent soldier who, even after befriending her, believes you are the only person in the universe who doesn't have the right to resort to violence in defense of their life, and she doesn't even have the spoilery knowledge only known by one and a half people that justifies that sentiment, so she comes across as a psychotic racist willing to delude herself into believing anything so she can commit child murder to fuel a genocide without feeling guilty.

+SuperZez Think of her as a loyal knight doing her job and also your death means happiness for all of her friends. She's aware that killing you is bad and she has very obviously fought and killed other humans. But she had her reasons. Just like a real soldier does when they kill.

But she holds you to a ridiculously higher moral standard than she does herself, and once you "befriend" her, not only will she resolve to kill you if you kill anyone, no matter how malicious their intentions towards you, she makes no effort to protect you. Even after befriending you, your life is the least valuable life in the world to her. She doesn't help you in any way, doesn't even supply you with some armor she must surely have lying around to help you without encouraging you to commit violence.

Only thing i can disagree with is rise of the tomb raider. Though I suppose it didn't bring much new gameplay to the series, it did at least bring the story in an interesting direction (in my opinion). Guess it depends on what you look at when you think about "bland games". Other than that, excellent list.
I bought and tried undertale but I'm not a fan of bullet hell shooters generally and the numerous random encounters made it grow stale real quick. I'm not sure what the appeal is. Everyone else seems to like it but I don't see what they say they see in it

The amount of random encounters lessens as the game progresses. If your going for the True ending, you only really need to do a random encounter once and then you can flee the few other times they pop up. I only ever sought random encounters when I wasted a bunch of healing items and needed to buy more. I'd suggest at least getting to Snowdin or Waterfal, since those better represent the pacing and tone of the game.

Undertale: The game where it's best enjoyed if you know nothing about it. AKA if you don't have an internet connection. If you've heard of it, then you basically know how "good" it is. I've owned the damn game since September after my roommate bought it and said how good it was. Four months later and I didn't even start the damn game up because I know literally everything that has happened. It's pointless at this point to bother.
The gameplay is literally the only thing I have to look forward to, and when you think of it like that, then the game falls flat. Big time. I showed some interest in playing it within the first months of owning the game but now the game's been beaten like a dead goat. It is kind of my fault but when everyone and their great great aunt thrice removed has played the game and talks a lot about it it's hard to avoid it in conversation. The fandom is worse than Steven Universe, and comprises of the regurgitated remains of the Homestuck fandom.
Not saying it's a bad game, it's fine. But the fandom ruined the game for anyone with an internet connection. I just don't see the appeal.
+Mek Ova I had an internet connection and enjoyed it well after watching several LPs. Just knowing the plot doesn't mean you know all the permutations for how scenarious can play out. And there are tons of little jokes and character details your not going to get from just one playthrough. For example, you can call Papyrus and Undyne in nearly every room and have them give some goofy/interesting comments on things. I have yet to see an LP that takes full advantage of this, so doing it on my own playthrough was very satisfying.
It's relative to the individual. This individual is just pretty damn tired of the game. If there was no significant fandom, I would probably be more inclined to play it.

Good things tend to have big fandoms, so if that's what causes you to avoid things then your going to miss out on a lot of good things.
Mordalon The same exact argument can be made for literally everything. Tbh I don't miss anything because my roommate won't hesitate to remind me. So do my friends. So trust me, I acknowledge that there -could- be good things, but for someone like me who's tired of hearing about all of the -good- things, it is only justifying the temr "Too much of a good thing can become a bad thing".

My argument only applies to popular things. Popularity isn't a determiner of quality, either good or bad, but good things are more likely to attract more people, because their good, so avoiding something because of it's popularity is going to serve you poorly.
Too much of a good thing only applies when having too many of a good thing has a negative affect. I don't see how having a lot of good games is a bad thing, the only issue is that you have too many good things than you know what to do with.

IGN calls Undertale their favourite game of the year, and it gets downvote-bombed. Yahtzee calls it their favourite game of the year, and hardly a downvote in sight. When are you people gonna realize that Undertale is NOT a bad game?
Neonwarrior I would think it’s because they have different demographics. ZP viewers tend to think more critically and mark Yahtzee’s opinions as a roadmap for how games have developed into an art form. IGN’s viewer base is a group of morally cancerous twatblasts. (Looking at you, every COD review they’ve ever done....)
Obviously I’m exaggerating for the sake of comedy, but my point stands.
Of course Undertale would be the number 1 contender in this list. I love Undertale and therefore a huge major fanboy of it! Undertale is my most favorite game of all time that even beats my previous number 1 champion for a long time which is Phantasy Star Online Episode I & II. Hell, I even have a $130 canvas print of Undertale and getting another $130 Undertale canvas print very soon because Undertale has won my heart and puts EVERY game I've ever played to shame! Also I'll subscribe to this channel now... NOT because this guy likes Undertale but I like his sense of humor. =)

Honestly? I played Undertale and found it pretty dull. The message it's trying to get across is nice and all but I've never found the "Retro Dungeon Crawler" thing to be very interesting. And yes, I realise Undertale is a subversion of that whole genre, but the core mechanics are still the same. The idea of trudging up and down uninteresting corridors and paths and occasionally doing something isn't really very interesting to me, regardless of how "good" the plot and characters are.
And yes, I did play the game enough to see the Neutral, Genocide and Pacifist runs through to the end. None of them struck me as being terribly interesting.
+LordBloodpool I don't see how you'd call it trudging, since the game isn't super long and the humor comes at your consistently. Using the phone to get Papyrus and Undyne to comment on the rooms was especially hilarious.

Great list, I probably would have put Halo 5 in the worst catagory. I felt like the gunfights were not necessery as I went almost the entire game by running past everyone and winning but when I got into a necessery gunfight I felt that death was no longer a penalty, I only had to wait 5 seconds before someone came up to me like "On your feet soldier! Never mind you took a rock crushing blow to your spine or enough bullets to supply the entire Army, just put a Hello Kitty Bandaid on it and you'll be fine." so when ever I did die it just felt like I was being a complete cock instead of it being genuinely difficult. The running animation was a bit weird as well. But thats just how I felt, people experience things differently (by the way, I played the series from Halo Anniversary to Halo 4 so I had an idea on what to expect)
I was so dissapointed by undertale, everyone said "ITS THE BEST GAME EVER!!111" and it built up false expectations for me.

+General Tullius My experience with GameStop was as follows:
- Hype loses its novelty. The same games are released over and over and the same people you see come into your store week in and week out keep buying in. The marketing is relentless and you only see it for what it is once you've been forcibly exposed to it repetitively; psychotically-manipulative. The same thing over and over again in every title, even if its not.
- The droll repetition of the popular titles makes the relatively few unique ones vanish in a cloud of guilt-by-association. You stop singling out the better ones in your overall view because in the end it's all the same nonsense. They want you to want to keep up with it all, even though doing so is financially impossible.
- I worked five midnight openings for Madden, six midnight openings for Halo, five Christmases and five black Fridays in a busy shopping mall store where the whole mall could be dead and we would still be busier than a goddamned theme park. I noticed two things: 1) Patterns in people's gaming routines, and 2) buying habits that creepily and sadly match the intended effect of mass-marketing. Example: it takes people an average of two weeks to beat their games - one week to come and buy new games, one week where we're dead on a Saturday wondering what the hell is going on, and the next week we get slammed with trade-ins. When Madden time rolls around, people trade in more and more valuable titles for what is essentially "new players, shinier helmets and also one gameplay tweak". You see these games people trade in, some of which are really good, for shit money in return and wonder what the sudden sports game connosiuer will have left after he trades in Madden, WHICH THEY ALMOST ALWAYS DO, USUALLY WITHIN A MONTH OR TWO. So they're either bored quickly by it or my customers were very much the "played it, done with it" variety. Also, sports games are year based so, like cars, they go down in value faster. Players looking to save some money are falling for the corporate trade-in value structure without realizing they're spending money and sacrificing good games on what is essentiually a rental.
- A kid punched his grandma in the face because he was being a spoiled brat. Banned from the store
- A nine year old kid tried to buy GTA: Vice City. I carded him for his driver's license, much to his protest. Threatens to get his dad. I gleefully oblige. He leaves. Returns with [SPECTACULARLY INEBRIATED] dad. After he is finished screaming incoherently at my face and asking what my [bad word] problem is, I read the ESRB label to the dad. Kid gets dragged out of the store by his ear. My boss is now in a good mood. We finally get to go home, which is good, because at this point it feels like it's been 9:25 for like five hours already.
- Lady asked me if we took passport photos. I think she was Ukranian. I sent her to Kay Jewelers.
- When one annoying ad campaign for an annoyingly popular shitty franchise vanishes, a similar one from a similarly shitty but puzzlingly popular franchise emerges in its place. Usually, it appears between the time you just got finished peddling the previous game in the franchise and the time some other franchise occupies the signage and GameStop TV. You come into work having completely forgotten about [some bullshit] and suddenly its all "THE RETURN OF THIS BULLSHIT IV" and you're all "Jesus fucking christ not This Bullshit again". From the ground floor of the one tech industry humanity is perpetually going bonkers over more than all the others, video game marketing is like a goddamned horror movie - Store signs and poster ads for game franchises are like those monsters in horror movies that not only just don't die, but keep coming back. Just when you almost forgot about them and thought they were long gone, BAM; the sign for the next one appears, like if Groundhog Day and Texas Chainsaw Massacre were the same goddamned movie. They're back in an even shittier sequel that will haunt your waking life and also your recurring nightmares forever, again, a fourth time, not counting expansion packs, which aren't canon anymore so they're gonna do new expansion backs, probably. AND EVERYONE WILL ASK ABOUT IT, AND YOU CAN'T TELL THEM IT'S GROUNDHOG DAY, BECAUSE THEN you're THE CRAZY ONE.
- CHRONOS - The Stingy Skynet. Lots of retailers use it, it's an automated system that lives in the GameStop network. It grades employee sales performance and doles out hours accordingly. Stores that sell the least Game Informer subs (or whatever bullshit they're pushing on people these days) get less hours in their district. Employees who are not the top tier performers get MAYBE three hours a week. Worth noting is that an average week will consist of Chronos distributing roughly 90 hours to a busy store like ours that must divide them amongst four full timers and six part timers. At some point, especially if you can't be bothered to shill magazine subscriptions to annoyed customers who are just there for their games, you are very much working at GameStop because you like it (read: are crazy), not because it makes you any real money.
Undertale is so highly recommended & rated, even by Yahtzee here, I might as well give it a try. It's about $10, right? Not much I can lose even if I don't end up enjoying it, aside from a few gumballs I could had bought. Of course, I'll keep my expectations tempered, but I will raise my expectations a little more higher than usual.

Fans of Undertale - please don't recommend a route for me to take. Haters of Undertale - I don't care about the fanbase, I just want to try the game, OK?

For those who are on the fence about playing Undertale, mainly because of the fanbase unfortunately turning into FNAF's kind of fanbase, don't let these types of things deter you from trying something interesting, as Undertale is this popular because of the charm it has, and several of the things Yahtzee mentioned above. Go ahead and try it out, and if someone judges you for playing it merely because of the fanbase, then shame on them.

In reality these annoying fans are just a vocal minority, but they have the loudest voice and since you hardly hear from the people who are separate from this vocal minority, people tend to assume that all of the fan base consists of this vocal minority. The only games my mother had played before she played Undertale was Diablo 1-3 and then she played Undertale. She hasn't beaten the game yet (Only Neutral so far) but she'll get there!

I don't really agree.
I ignored undertale for the longest time, not because I didn't like it, but because snotty 12 year olds kept shoving it in my face declaring it the best thing fucking ever cause sans made a fart joke, which ruined the experience for me, however now that I shuttered myself off from the hype and then actually went in and played it, I can firmly say I enjoyed it, I like the characters because they are actually well written with good personalities. But my point is, I can never actually get into things that people shove into my face and tell me its great, all the while giving me either non existent, or extremely poor reasoning as to WHY its such a good game.
Ill give you some reasons:
The characters, while unassuming and cliche at first, have very deep and sometimes downright unnerving character arcs, even minor ones.
The attention to detail for literally EVERY detail is astounding. Every part of the game has some sort of explanation in a detailed and meaningful way, either from discovering new dialogue or finding a piece of environmental storytelling.
The narrative is extremely well-written. Not only do the characters really drive the surface level story in such a fascinating way, but the game introduces a sort of "meta-narraritive" that deconstructs and analyses the meaning and purpose behind typical RPG and video game mechanics and tropes. It fits in brilliantly with the main story and is unbelievably fleshed out.
The soundtrack is hands down the best in any game I've played. Period. Not only does it do a fantastic job at setting so many different tones in a way that doesn't feel forced or incoherent, but the use of leitmotifs and secrets within the music also adds to the narrative and expands upon the story.
Combat is unique. No battle ever gets stale. Attacks greatly differ from enemy to enemy and are fun as hell to play, especially if you enjoy bullethells.
Finally, you have deep choices and meaningful consequences. Everything you do in the game is remembered, and has purpose and weight, even through multiple playthroughs, which goes along with the whole meta-narrative of deconstructing typical RPGs. You can ACT enough upon a monster, and eventually you'll be given a chance to spare it. Or, you could just kill it, which is easier. Even THIS, how killing is usually the easier solution, IS touched upon in the narrative and it's very thought-provoking.
There you go. Id say those are some pretty valid points to convince you to try it out. If you DO end up giving it a shot, please pay attention to every little detail, from the music, to the world, to the characters. Every little detail, every story element, and every mechanic, is explained in great detail.
Its not the greatest thing ever, but it's a damn great RPG.please give it a go.

Undertale is the first game in a while that had me losing track of time while playing it. I haven't had such a clever, succinct, enjoyable gaming experience since Valve released the first Portal game.
