That has to be one of the most beautiful creeks I’ve ever seen. Great Fishing and great scenery.

Thanks Tristan. That might have been the most beautiful creek I’ve ever seen captured on video. While fishing last week I lost several fish consecutively and as it turned out, the hook had been bent slightly open, probably from being hung up on a rock. I closed the bend a bit with my thumb and it made all the difference in the world. Sometimes I think I unfairly default to blaming the rod. Thanks again! 👍

I tend to agree with iowa driftless, my guess would be the hook. This is the most I've seen you lose. Enjoyed the video.

What a beautiful place! Seems like the fish were too small to give the weight needed to stay on with no barb. You’re usually hooking a little bigger - like 8-12” seems like.

Perhaps your attitude toward what seems a satisfactory rod was colored by your recent use of the hakubai--maybe you still had "hakubai brain" and so you couldn't adjust your expectations. A Lovely creek and good fish. Nice long video, too.

There’s no comparing anything to a Nissin Hakubai, and certainly not at this price difference. I’ve got the Hakubai 240 medium for just these types of beautiful little streams and it’s just perfect. I’ve still got the older version of the rod he’s using and it is comparatively pretty stiff. Not bad just not optimal.

Well Tristan you’ve done it to me again! I’ve purchased several Tenkara rods based on your videos. The Mizuchi(love it), the Oni Type1(love-love it) and I JUST ordered a Shimotsuki Gen 240 for real cheap through Amazon. $29.65 w/free shipping through Amazon Japan. Honestly it was Tom Davis who’s responsible for my purchase. He made it look(& sound) like a real fun short close quarters rod. Not sure it would be “necessary” when I have the Mizuchi in its shortest length but for under $30 delivered to my door? Cheap fun! Thanks for all your videos and keep them coming! We’ll keep “liking”! Neil From Texas

    Tristan,
I have viewed almost all of your videos and have outfitted myself based on lots of your recommendations and was wondering what app you use to locate good out of the way streams?
I want you fish the Putah creek tributaries and want to review them Crome some app.
Also, I fish the East and West Carson out of Markleeville Ca. that you might want to try something.
    Your dedicated viewer,
    Dick Hollister

I would blame the hook as well. wondering if you sharpen them? If the point skitters across your thumbnail it is dull. A couple swipes with a diamond hone is usually all it takes. I like the EZE-lap shirt pocket pen style. Great vid!

It's a similar thing for general lure fishing rods, really. Though in their case the more high end ones tend to be faster in taper (at least most of the time). I see a lot of people complain about losing more fish after they upgraded to a more expensive, fast rod for the first time since they act so immensely different to softer tapers. Possibly the same ordeal

Where I grew up in southern AZ there is an intermittent stream with a 300 foot waterfall down a granite reef. Below that there is several hundred feet of granite that the water spreads into nearly a film over a huge slab of granite. I used to drink that water. Still the best tasting water I've ever had. Not sure I would still drink from it though. A lot more human traffic through there now. And I mean that in the most nefarious way. It's only 20 miles from the southern border.

I love your videos! I grew up fly fishing Montana creeks and rivers in the late 60s and the 70s. Because of my fascination with your videos, my kids gave me a Tenkara rod for Christmas, and I am really looking forward to using it this Spring! This is going to be a new adventure for me.
I humbly offer one suggestion. If your hookup rate is low, switch to a smaller fly. I think you will find that it makes a big difference. Thanks for your great work!

An incredibly beautiful stream, to be sure. But equally remarkable, I think, is to find a stream with nothing but native cutthroat trout. Thank you for your rod review. I always find them interesting - this little rod looks pretty intriguing ( but I am left wondering how I could sneak yet another rod into the house. 😂 )

I’m wondering what you think about catch and release as far as it’s impact on the fish. I’m no expert but have come across studies that say even with the best practices, the attrition rate is not as low as we may have hoped, 5 -30%. Thinking hook size to fish size, proportionately smaller fish I’m guessing, would be more impacted by the physical damage caused by a hook than larger fish.
I am a tenkara fisher and do enjoy this activity. I have been targeting waters with larger fish, 10” and up. Some friends have brought up the question of why would I do this for pleasure. I note that I would rather be a fish in a catch and release situation than a commercially caught fish. Those fish caught in a net and put in the hold suffocated to death. They can take anywhere from 10 minutes to an hour or more to die. Even when I keep fish, I use the Ikejime method to kill immediately. Here, have another serving of trout!
