2004 Subaru WRX Review

My thoughts on the 2004 Subaru WRX, with the 2.0L flat four engine and 5 speed manual transmission.
There are a handful of cars that are defined by the culture in which they have formed. Subaru Wrx’s are one of those cars. The culture has been defined as “Bro culture”. You know, the guys that wear cut off tshirts to show off “the guns, talk about how dumb weed is while vaping clouds bigger that a diesel truck’s exhaust plume, and mention how much they can bench at every social event. But why is that? Why is the Subaru Wrx such an attraction to “Bros”? Well the simple answer is that they’re one in the same.
Subaru Wrx’s come with flat four cylinder engines, attached to turbochargers. Paired with a five speed manual transmission, and the Wrx will zip past your average commuter car. But you’d never expect it. Sure, the Wrx had a weird hood scoop, but Subaru was doing something most car companies weren’t doing at the time: Turbocharging four door sedans. So the Wrx isn’t assuming, it doesn’t look like it would blow the doors off your Camry at first glance. So what does the Wrx Do? It flexes a little to let you know it’s strength. See the connection? Bros are insecure. They want you to know how tough they are at all times, so they won’t get teased or messed with. Same goes for the Wrx. It has to flex to show you what it’s got.
Would I buy a 2004 Subaru Wrx? Yes. They’re fun cars. While interior space isn’t at an abundance, it’s made up for by the turbo under the hood, and all wheel drive. The Wrx is a great car. It’s fun to drive, has four doors, and performs just as well in the winter months. If you can find one un-touched by ricer hands, It’ll promise enjoyment for many miles to come.

I drove a stage 2 , 2002 wrx for 16 years. It was always a blast, always ran, only the rust stopped it

Currently daily driving a 2004 WRX with 114k miles. Stage 2. Just did the timing belt and maintenance stuff. Hopefully it lasts awhile.

I have tried the 2005 STI a couple of years ago and when you compare a WRX or STi you need to keep in mind that this car is a very, very sophisticated design - a complete package even straight out of the factory, the engine, the gearbox, the drivetrain, the suspension and brakes designed to work together to get the most out of these cars. They accelerate well (4wd of course they do, no fishtailing, etc no tendency of the back part to break out sideways they just feel like some giant winch pulls you hard), they can corner extremely well, and they can stop. STi is a stepup from an WRX, the example I have driven had the 2,5 and had around ~300 hp with slightly modified exhaust system to allow you to hear the distinctive boxer noise. It is still an amazing car.

It’s been well taken care of it’s had all its maintenance done by shops with all receipts of the work done with 198k miles and around $6k original engine with no mods done 👍🏻

But now sense I’ve had her I’ve got a Tomei exhaust, aftermarket intake (not sure what brand), invidia catted downpipe, accessport v3, stage 2 tune and she’s running great it’s been a year of owning her 👍🏻
