    This is awesome. I built a gate from 1x2's and screws for my mom's porch so her little dog doesn't get out. I made it pretty and put 2 small ball bearing casters on the bottom for it to roll in case it started dragging. I was so proud of myself and it seemed perfect but my mom said after it rained, it started dragging. I haven't been over there to assess it yet but I think (and hope) raising it slightly and using your no-sag method will fix it as long as the problem isn't rotten posts (porch is very old). Thanks so much for demonstrating. You did a great job showing how to make an easy fix! 👍😊

    ❓❓ Question... How should I remedy a sagging probably if hinges are the culprit causing sag on a porch gate? Thanks!!🙂

    • @SWiFence
      @SWiFence  ปีที่แล้ว

      You're going to have to take it off and reattach. Make sure you're using 2 1/2" or 3" screws to anchor your hinges. If you can't find a solid place to screw into you may have to pull the post and put in a new one (more work).

  • @RichardKinch
    @RichardKinch ปีที่แล้ว

    You could make a nice business of fabricating the truss cable kits out of all stainless. Anchors you cut and drill from angle (stainless or aluminum). Threaded eyebolt and nut on one end for adjustment instead of costly turnbuckle. Cable stop on the other end of stainless cable. You would have a few $hundreds invested in cable crimping tooling. I've used threaded rod and nuts which makes the mechanism even simpler and field configurable, although the rod is more pricey than cable.

    *Nice Brother, I appreciate the info. Been a fence installer foreman for 3 years at the most expensive fence company in the State... lot of rich, picky people!*
    *I'm working on a Custom 6 foot Horizontal Cedar fence, with 1×6×6 and a ½" gap in between.*
    *The customer is picky and doesn't want any diagonal wood bracing on the gate at all.*
    *I tried to explain the importance of framing gates, and how easy a wooden gate will rack/sag without proper framing...*
    *They don't care. I'm PRAYING that this method alone with hold the weight of the gate up after box framing the edges.*
    *What do you think?*

    • @SWiFence
      @SWiFence  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    • @TheOne-yc1wt
      @TheOne-yc1wt 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I would tell them that the sagging is not warrantied, so when the time comes to do it right, you charge again.

    • @tammygurl64
      @tammygurl64 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Ask them if they want to pay for a gate that will sag or do they want to pay for a gate that's built to last. If they still choose the saggy gate, write up a disclaimer that says something to the affect of "customer rejects structural recommendations and requests a gate built in a way that lacks structural integrity. Customer understands to build a gate in this manner voids any and all warranties" and have them sign it or rethink their decision! LOL!😄

      If the gate is pulling the post out of the ground then the problem is the post. The only solution for this is to pull the post out and reinstall another one correctly. It doesn't sound like it's anywhere deep enough.

    My gate middle will be decorative so the tension and compression elements would look ugly and ruin the effect. Wouldn't J bolts and a rotating wheel( like a shopping cart but heavy duty) work as well? The "artistic" gate I'm planning is 2×6 lumber rectangle frame with 3/4 J bolts. I am using half lap jointinting with two bolts spaced in the middle of the joints for additional strength. Would the wheels be a good enough option for preventing sag along with the J bolts and 12 inch straps? Each gate section is 8 feet long 4 feet tall. 2x6 lumber.

    • @SWiFence
      @SWiFence  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      With the 4’ x 8’ gate you would almost want to consider a metal frame structure. A wheel may work but we try not to use them, so I don’t know a ton there. We like our gates to be operable without additional components.

I built a porch gate for my mom and I'm told it's now dragging after some rain. I haven't assessed it yet but if the hinges are the problem, I think you are saying I need to attach one end of the cable to the same post where the gate is attached, right? ❓Then where do I attach the other end of the cable? Does it go on the bottom corner of the gate on the opposite side? Thanks so much for mentioning this!
