This is the best raw edge applique tutorial and technique out there! THANK YOU!! I've been using this technique all weekend creating raw edge appliqued panels for table runners!
Thank you so much for this technique,I have been piecing for 40yrs a Longarm quilter for 20 yrs,and this is the best idea I have ever seen.I will be showing everyone.I really like your teaching style as well, your advice to new quilters is fantastic.Your manner of speaking is very pleasant also.Keep up the good work.
Lisa, I love your style of teaching. It is as if you are talking to/with the person who is watching your tutorial. Most people 'instruct' as if they are teaching a whole group of people who are on the same learning level, but you seem to make it more personalized. You are instructing on a beginner's level, yet, at the same time it is not boring to those who know quite a bit already. You go into a great deal of detail, yet, in a way that you do not 'linger' to long on each thing/part. Great job! Today is the first day for me to watch you, and I plan to come back and start from your first video to each new one you up-load. BTW Love your design for this quilt ... keep up the good work.
So glad I found and watched this! I’ve got freezer paper from my waterslide decal projects! Best thing is, you can reuse the shapes to reuse! Really enjoy your tutorial, relaxed, informative and great for beginners and higher. I’ve been sewing for years but love to pick up tips and tricks.
I just came across this older video, it must have been in your last home. I got a smile on my face and thought the many faces of Lisa Capen lol. I found the tutorial lots of fun and very informational ,
What a lovely person you are. I was one who started quilting and then became discouraged and put my work down and haven’t picked it up for two years. Your encouraging words makes me wanted to pick it back up again.
+Jenifer Acklin. Wow Jenifer I'm so hlad to hear that you may pick up your quilting again! Sometimes walking away and taking a break is all that's needed.......and if you have a desire to get back to it, then we are here to help!!
I absolutely love this tutorial. I made a wall hanging a few years back for the church where I go for our craft club with zigzag stitch as you’ve just described . It was my first time to do this and never done anymore since then. But you have encouraged me to have another go. Thank you Lisa.
Now THAT is the way to do raw edge applique! I had feared that fusing material would leave my quilts and garmets stiff and this method really eliminates that possibility. Thanks for such a great video!
Omgosh thank you so so much for this video!! You have opened up a whole new world for me in quilting! I've only done 2 quilts in my life and I've wandered how people put such detail in thier quilts, now I know. Thank you!!
Hey Michelle! I'm so glad this video was helpful for you....yesssss a huge new world with endless possibilities with applique....that's one of the reasons it's my favorite quilting technique :)
Lisa, I'm just thrilled that I found you!! As you chat with us on your videos, I feel like I'm a friend you invited into your workroom to sew with you. Your calm voice and easy manner help me relax so I gain confidence that I can create beautiful things, too. You explain products and steps thoroughly so I know how and why and what to do. The instructions are easy to follow. Thank you very, very much for helping me discover the joy of creating special pieces. ~ Norma
+S Kunnavatana several viewers remind me that glue sticks work better.....honestly I find the same thing!! The edge starts to unravel and for me it's way easier to use the liquid glue. :)
Oh My Goodness! This video just popped up. I thought I had watched all your videos but I had never seen this one. I love this quilt. I downloaded the pattern and I bought the fabric but I have started it yet! So glad to see this one.
Thank you Lisa. I just joined. I haven't been quilting much lately. You have inspired me to get back to it. I love your relaxed way of teaching. I always feel like I have to rush. I look forward to getting back to my favorite hobby. Thank you for sharing your God-inspired talent with us.
just beginning to try appliqueing and am so glad i found this video. Love the idea of being able to glue the pieces down and then sew. Thanks for sharing this technique.
Thank you Lisa for this video. It is very helpful to watch it.Step by step, I'm learning a lot from your teaching techniques. Looking forward to seeing this quilts progress. ❤
Only started quilting a year ago, but I am addicted. Thanks for a great tutorial. I felt like you just took some time to let me visit with you in your studio to show me this process. 💜💛💚💐
Good morning ☀️ Ms. Capen, so much for your teaching and sharing your teaching with us, and showing how to use freezer paper and glue so easy to do appliqué. Thank you so much 😊
Good morning Ms. Lisa, that’s so nice and easy to do. Thank you so much for sharing and teaching me how to sew appliqué and do it an easier way. Thank so much.
I agree this is a great method and the glue comes in handy in my quilting all the time. I bought some of the bee fabric this year because I love the colors they are classic looking and your idea for a quilt for that fabric is a good one. I like your quilt!
Thank you so much for your detailed tutorial even teaching how to turn the zigzag. I’m a beginner. I’m making a wall hanging with the pieces I drew in various spots like a turtle, tree, house door, etc. Have you made a video of how to make your added pieces a little puffy and protect the edges from fraying? I only have a 50 year old Kenmore. 😅 it puffs along like the Little Engine that Could.
Thank you so much! I am a complete beginner, but have wanted to try ever since a visit to the American Museum in Batb, UK, where I attended an informal talk on the history of Quilting. That was a long long time ago, but now I have the time to start. I shall follow you as I learn this wonderful craft.
Thanks for this one ... I have avoided applique .. but there is a baby quilt I reaaaallly want to make and this has given me the courage to try ! I will be looking for more of your video's !
Thank you for your video. I am totally new to doing applique, but I adore the look for quilts & other projects. Since budget is ALWAYS a concern, this makes my dreams attainable, given I invest time into perfecting my skills. I do not feel the pressure to get things absolutely perfect due to cost, so i'm ready to jump in and get started learning this craft. My husband will also be pleased to see my scraps stash finally go down, as I jazz up little thing's here and there! 😆 I am currently putting together a baby/toddler & matching doll quilt (very quick) for my little niece. It must be done within a day or two so they can take it with them back to China. So applique will give me a look that is not only super cute, but looks like I spent lots of time & money on it (but I didn't). I can't wait to get started!
I am so excited for you Rachael! Learning new techniques can be challenging, but it sounds like you have plenty of patience and a strong will to learn, you'll do fine, and YES....you can absolutely do applique on a budget....the freezer paper will save you so much money! Your doll quilt sounds adorable.....don't you just love the projects that are way easier then they appear when finished.....FANTASTIC!
Hi Lisa, I just watched you do the flight of the bee, WOW!! amazing!!! I hope some day I will be able to get a Long Arm machine. I am learning so much from you in the short time I have been watching. I cant wait for more of your tutorials . God Bless You and have a great day.
Sharon Traughber thank you for watching! Yes, I am so glad I found out about this technique and it's nice to find other artists who also use this method :) I'd love to see some of your work!
Excellant tutorial, I am all for saving money on other expensive fixatives for appliqué, now all I have to do is find the glue and Freezer Paper where I live in Australia.
Thank you Lisa ..... I started the patch 3 years ago and I like the applied but I had a lot and I still have difficulties with the mirror side with the fuse. Your method is super simple for a beginner like and will allow me to make my own drawings I live in France and it is not so simple to make the patch because everything is in English explanations but you have done your video so well that even without understanding the explanations I feel reassured by your demonstration. thank you very much I subscribe to your channel and I will watch everything. Continue and once again thank you for having de-dramatized for me the applied and the postponement of the drawings Good luck and good luck for the future Fran
Lisa, I am so glad I found this video, I just started applique and you have made it so much easier. You explained everything so that I could really understand it and I thank you for that, Will follow you on FB too.
I'm glad that you found this video helpful!! I'm still trying to get comfortable in front of the camera....that will come with time I reckon. If the videos help just ONE PERSON....then it's worth the uncomfortableness hahahahaaa. Yes follow me on Facebook as I am a lot more active over there, THANK YOU!
I like your method. And I like the U-shaped work area you have so you can do everything by just rolling your chair around. I do the same thing. Sure beats getting up and down to reach work areas. Keep making these videos. NO FEAR !!
thank you so much for following along in this journey with me! So glad this video was helpful.....this was one of my first videos...I have many more raw edge applique videos that are better and you can actually see what I'm doing hahaa :)
Here’s a thought, once you’re done and you wash that and you dry it is the middle of those petals going to lift it up and kind of Have a puckering bubbly look to them. Because with the fusible webbing that keeps the center of the large pieces stuck to the background fabric so it’s smooth. Without that does it cause the two pieces of fabric to be limp and not have a good shape. Could you stitch inside the pedal to maybe help hold it down to the background fabric?
On larger applique like this I like to go in and quilt in those areas. I like to do that even when using fusible products as well :) In the video where I offer the pattern for this quilt, you may be able to see how I quilted this one....it's so cute! th-cam.com/video/DMwp4FJXl1w/w-d-xo.html
Hi Lisa Just found and subscribed to your channel, thank you for being such an inspiring teacher and making your methods so essy to understand, I am a beginner quilter and your teaching is so simple to understand.
Hello Lisa, I've been watching videos in a haphazard order about different ways to make quilts. I have an embroidery machine that will applique haven't learned yet :) I love your way of doing this..ty
+Joy s. Thank you Joy!! I believe you'll love your embroidery machine for applique :) I have one and it does a fabulous job. I find the only limitation with my embroidery machine is the largest hoop size I have only goes to 8 inches wide, and I'm a fan of doing large embroidery patterns hahahaa. ♡♡♡♡
I just found this video and I enjoyed your technique so much. I am relatively a beginner at quilting although I've completed a few but my main focus is on machine embroidery. I find recently that I really enjoy applique and this looks so easy. i've got to give it a try. Thank you for the inspiration to try something new. Keep up the good work. I love the way you present your instructions you make it easy to understand and keep things moving with interest.
so true...I love that you don't have to remember to mirror image the design....as I am always going going going....and sometimes forget to do that step when using the fusible adhesives......and then I have to back track when I realize my mistake!! I'm all about saving $$$$
Love your ideas; thank you. When I last used freezer paper, I found that it would curl up. Can't remember if I had the iron on it too long or what. Reuse it made It curl up even more. Any ideas why this is happening?
hmmm, that's the first time hearing that it curls up. I reckon it could be the brand of freezer paper, or the age of it?? Also, steam released from the iron?? To perhaps the heat was to high?
You are such an inspiration. I've been looking for an easy method to applique for a while now. I will use it on the bags that I make. Liked and subscribed ;-D.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for not having background music. I am hard of hearing and I can't tell you how many videos I have had to turn off because the music was loud and the instructions were too low, so I had to miss out on something I really wanted to see. Thanks again! Great job!!!
I found you on you tube think you are quite unique individual enjoy your presentation. It is such a small world found on facebook that you are in Hampton VA. My daughter lives in Newport News.
Hi Lisa, I love your channel because you opened up so many new possibilities for me as a new sewer. I've been wanting to do applique work for a long time after a friend gave me a tea towel with a simple but lovely applique at the bottom. I don't use it, but I only display it on my oven door handle because it's so cute. Is there a special type of Elmer's glue that you use? I tried to find it in the transcript but couldn't find it. I was also wondering if pinking sheers would be a good look for applique, especially if I miss the edges a little bit in some places while I learn to sew curves and straight lines. Thank you so very much for your excellent demonstration and inspiration. I live in Australia, so my roll of freezer paper cost me USD$18 as it's not available in our supermarkets. I guess it would have taken me a lifetime to use the roll, so I'll have to squirrel away a heap of my sewing things into a good hiding place and hope that I can find it all in my next reincarnation! I'll have had 70 birthdays next month, so I can't see me getting to use all my items in the time that's left to me mow! 😊 Thanks again for a terrific channel!🎉 🇦🇺
Ive just done my 1st quilt for my daughter. I want to put her initials on a block. I love this. Where i live i can only find cheap iron on letters. Mayb i dont know what to look for also. Lol.. Can i use this for intials. Round 2" to 3"?
There are tips to go on the Elmer's glue bottles. I purchased mine from Sharon Schambers website. Just a few glue "dots" does the work. I was told that these tips can be purchased at craft stores such as Michael's, Joann's and Hobby Lobby. Great at controlling the glue.
You know, I often look for the tips when I'm at the crafting stores, and never seem to come across them. I believe it would be easiest for me to just order it from the website you mentioned. To be honest, I've just gotten used to controlling the glue with the tip that comes on the glue hahahahahaa.
Hi Lisa, how are you? I LOVE the way you teach, you should be in a classroom !!! I love the way you say there is no right or wrong ways to do, and say another way to do if you dont have the same kind of sewing machine.I never quilt, but I love it.My mom did a quilt about 50 years ago, and from all of 5 kids, I was the only one that wanted.I will try to post the picture on your facebook.I have a lot of fabrics because I sew doggie clothes. Now is the question, can you use different types of fabric in one quilt? like cotton and nylon and other types? or it have to be all the same kind of fabric? How do you do when it become so big to sew on the machine?? Thank you so much for sharing your way of doing this beautiful art, maybe I will try to do a baby one to begin.Lots of hugs...irene.
+Isabel Charles are you on Facebook? If so, jump over and find me at Lisa Capen Quilts. On my page I have a link to my Dropbox for this pattern, or send me a message including your email and I can send it that way :)
aweeee, thank you so much! This was one of my first tutorials, and I'd like to think I've gotten better since then and actually show more close up what I'm doing in my newer videos lol :)
This is the best raw edge applique tutorial and technique out there! THANK YOU!! I've been using this technique all weekend creating raw edge appliqued panels for table runners!

You can do it!
I tried this last night and it worked very well! Thank you for the tutorial!
Thank you so much! I am a complete beginner, but have wanted to try ever since a visit to the American Museum in Batb, UK, where I attended an informal talk on the history of Quilting.

So very helpful and informative! Thank you.
You're welcome :)
Excellent video. Thank you.
This is so inspirational, learned so much from your videos🌷 hugs from Norway
Thank you so much!
Thanks for the tutorial!
I'll start to get some ideas together to design a mini wall hanging.
You are such an inspiration. I've been looking for an easy method to applique for a while now. I will use it on the bags that I make. Liked and subscribed ;-D.
So glad you've joined along :)
Thank you this is so beautiful. God blessed and take care.
Thank you so much!
Great tips!!! Thank you so much! 💓
I love this,. Can you reuse the freezer paper pattern that you peeled off ?? Thanks for your time. :)
Maybe one more time it will stick. After that the freezer paper will not stick well at all.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for not having background music. I am hard of hearing and I can't tell you how many videos I have had to turn off because the music was loud and the instructions were too low, so I had to miss out on something I really wanted to see. Thanks again! Great job!!!
You are welcome Mary!
This looks so ofawesome

+Debra Nelson awesome to hear from you Debra!!!
I found you on you tube think you are quite unique individual enjoy your presentation. It is such a small world found on facebook that you are in Hampton VA. My daughter lives in Newport News.
Elizabeth Benedict wow! It really is a small world! That's amazing :) thanks for your comment...videos are not my strong suit hahahahaa!!
I live in southeast Kansas
Very nice technique...thanks
This was great!!!!!
You mentioned you starched the fabrick. What kind of starch do you use?
This is genius. Thanks.
You're welcome!
Ive just done my 1st quilt for my daughter. I want to put her initials on a block. I love this. Where i live i can only find cheap iron on letters. Mayb i dont know what to look for also. Lol.. Can i use this for intials. Round 2" to 3"?
It would be a lot nicer if you made your own verses buying the ones in the store :) Yes, this technique works for all shapes of applique
Beautiful and easy!!! Thanks
Rose Carrizales thank you Ms. Rose!

Thank you for the feedback!!! :)
Thanks for the tutorial. I thoroughly enjoyed it!
I'm so glad ♡
There are tips to go on the Elmer's glue bottles. I purchased mine from Sharon Schambers website. Just a few glue "dots" does the work. I was told that these tips can be purchased at craft stores such as Michael's, Joann's and Hobby Lobby. Great at controlling the glue.
You know, I often look for the tips when I'm at the crafting stores, and never seem to come across them. I believe it would be easiest for me to just order it from the website you mentioned. To be honest, I've just gotten used to controlling the glue with the tip that comes on the glue hahahahahaa.

Lisa, I have a question, could you glue the pattern to the freezer paper than cut it out, also do you need to put the pattern upside down?
Wonderful
Thank you love the video and was wondering what starch you use.
Thanks!! I use StayFlo from Wal-Mart and mix my own :)
