  • How to Handle Negative Feedback From Your Manager or Colleagues at Work. Negative feedback from your boss, have you ever received negative feedback from your manager? Negative feedback or criticism from your colleagues or your boss can be quite challenging to handle. Learning to handle it is a must for your professional and personal development, especially when it's constructive, like in your performance review and evaluation. Research shows that people who are better at handling negative feedback are more successful than those who can’t handle it. Everyone will eventually be given negative feedback in some form or another. Regardless of the nature of the feedback, the way you receive it will make a huge difference. These are my 5 tips to make sure you react to criticism in a professional way:
    1. Don’t Get Defensive. During a feedback conversation you might be feeling defensive, which is normal but don’t show it. This will come across immature and unprofessional. It is in your best interest to control it as much as you can.Try to suspend judgment for the moment. Learning how your boss / superior views you is an opportunity for a career growth.
    2. Get more information to make things clear. It can come as a surprise to learn that people don’t see us the way we see ourselves. Avoid the temptation to talk to your boss immediately after receiving the negative feedback. Once you’ve had the opportunity to clear your head, think about the main points your boss mentioned. Do they make sense? Maybe you should go back and revisit this unexpected feedback with your boss?
    3. Don’t Dwell on Negative Feedback. If it points to flaw which makes you self-conscious, you are probably going to feel bad about it and that’s completely normal. Allow yourself some time to work through these feelings and let them go. Remember that you are not your job! And your professional performance doesn’t change your value as a human being. Don’t get engaged in self-destructive thoughts
    4. Show initiative and come up with an improvement plan. The best thing you can do to move forward is to come up with a plan on how to fix the problem. Take initiative and show you care about improving. Schedule a follow-up meeting to address the plan and to analyze how you has your progress been so far. Treat negative feedback as an opportunity to bond with your manager. A positive feedback might wait for you in your next performance review.
    5. Learn from the feedback. Ask yourself: What have I learned about myself? What can I do differently from now on? The learning process can be about the feedback, about how you dealt with the feedback or both. Every negative feedback which has been constructive made me learn something new. It would be so much worse if your boss noticed you were doing bad work and wouldn’t say a word. If you are successful in accepting the feedback and recognizing what it’s worth, you will be much more productive in life.

    I received enough criticism until finally I decided to quit my job, I did not quit yet, but I am planning to soon but I am scouting for new better jobs first. The only advantage of excessive criticisms is that it makes you review and reevaluate your whole job as a concept, not your performance but your job itself can contain a lot of flaws but you did not notice them because you were too comfortable to see them. Life is hard and tricky.

    • @myemmotion
      @myemmotion  4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      You are absolutely right. If you decided to leave, this isn't due to a flaw related to your performance, it is due to your job being a place you don't belong to. The sooner you realize it, the better.

    • @myemmotion
      @myemmotion  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      In this video I was referring to dealing with feedback which is constructive. The feedback which isn't constructive, and which is given you by someone who clearly doesn't want it to be helpful, should be taken completely differently. Is your boss that is giving you hard times?

      My Boss is supportive but I am working with five consultants in a clinic and they are not happy about my performance and some of them want to transfer me to another section. I am scouting for ways to escape my job to another, do you agree?

    • @myemmotion
      @myemmotion  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Hossam_1993 Having a boss who is supportive is actually a huge plus at any role. How long have you been working there for? Are you happy with the job itself? Do you think these consultants are right about your performance?
      If you feel that they are right and that you might need to work harder in certain areas or to learn something new, etc.; then escaping to another job is not a solution. Some colleagues can be negative to newbies at work due to many reasons, these issues are usually temporary and tend to fade away.
      If the job itself is not making you happy then that is another story!

    • @Hossam_1993
      @Hossam_1993 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      EMMOTION by Marat
      These consultants are kinda right since I am easily distracted, but some of the flaws they pointed at were overrated. Like when they said those staff who arrived after me are far better than me without comparison!! I could not correlate it with reality since two of them were learning from me.
      The fact that they are taking bad impression is a red flag to me since impressions are hard to change. In addition, in my job I dont feel like a decision maker, instead a decision follower. I only follow orders and policies of the superiors which means there is no creativity in what I do. I want a job that gives me meaningful presence, I feel like a slave.
      By the way do you do Skype session? I am interested in talking to you.

    What really unsettles people in the workplace is restructuring. I had an enhanced role, which meant I did extra duty’s and tasks. Now, I am old this doesn’t apply anymore, I feel quite upset and hurt. Just shows, experience doesn’t mean much

    • @myemmotion
      @myemmotion  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I am really sorry you are going through that. It's something that we don't usually notice until it is directly related to us. The majority of companies do their best to make employees drive the company through the tough times, but it is never the other way around. Once the restructuring takes place, the employees who overworked and who gave so much to the company can be easily let go. Which is why it's important to keep our own priorities in mind. Do you feel your job is in danger?

      As long as you receive feedback which is constructive, say "thank you" and apply whatever the feedback is to your day to day. Showing that you don't like the tone or getting defensive will always go against you, believe me.

    So, I have done pretty much every step you mentioned in your video, but seems like it isn’t enough. I am getting frustrated. I am a sever and I know it’s different then other jobs giving you feedback, but at the end of the day it’s feedback. 🥴

      I am sorry to hear that. What kind of feedback have you received from your manager? Do you have other team members that feel the same way?
      Maybe it's your boss who is the difficult one?

      @@myemmotion everyone says that I’m doing a great job except the GM.
      Every week we get the ratings and every week I get horrible reviews. I observed coworkers with the highest scores and see if I can learn something, but no. I do the exactly same thing and honestly didn’t know what else to do.
      I have worked with the GM, but seems like when we work the same schedule almost everything goes wrong for me. I do everything it’s expected of me. I’m the first one to come in for my shift and the last one to go. Always have a very positive attitude, but nothing seems to work.
      During training they focus on sanitation and safety which obviously it’s great to learn all that to have a safe work environment for staff and guests, but there’s a whole a lot that you don’t go completely thorough or at all.
      When the GM is there and I ask a question when I’m not sure how to proceed the reply I get is “Didn’t you go through training?”. And just go and fix it and really don’t explain how I can do it, just gets it done. It was very frustrating. 😐

      @@codlover1508 I can definitely relate to that. Some people are just impossible to please. Maybe you could try the opposite strategy, stop making a big effort of getting his approval. Do your job the best you can and switch off work when you are done.
      And let's see if that turns things around.
      If that isn't working either, at least you've tried it all before considering an exit strategy.

      @@myemmotion aww thank you so much, but at this point there’s nothing I could’ve done. Since we get rated every week, I can’t changed what the customers reviews just ended up switching positions. So I’m going to try that. I applied for other positions with other companies and seems promising. Thank you so much for taking the time to reply. Up side of this and out of my frustration, I’m glad I got on TH-cam and found your video. You’re awesome. 🤗

      @@codlover1508 You are very welcome! You are doing the right thing. Settling for something which isn't motivating for you on a long term is definitely not a good idea. So fingers crossed, hope a nice new challenge is on the way towards you!
      Best of luck and keep me updated :)

    Negative feedback when constructive helps people grow. If it’s negative just to be negative and attack then it’s not feedback it’s workplace harassment and bullying
