Fun fact: Both "The Adventures of Tintin" and "War Horse" were directed by Steven Spielberg and came out (in America, at least) the same month, so that may be why they were in that parody.

  • @usuallyangry

I had a funny reason for hating this show as a kid: I thought that if you parodied something, that meant you _hated_ whatever your source material was. So if I saw a cartoon character I liked in MAD, I got upset, thinking it was out of spite.
Naturally, I don’t think this today, and looking back, MAD was pretty based. Terrible shame what happened to the magazine.

One things that's funny to me is that in "The Social Netjerk" sketch, Mordecai and Rigby appeared saying "Well speed it up, cause in a few minuets it'll be our time" referring to how MAD would air new episodes at 8:15 and Regular Show would air at 8:30, but by the time the episode aired, Gumball had premiered a few weeks prior, Adventure Time was on hiatus and MAD and Regular Show switched timeslots for some reason (the show that would come up next was The Problem Solverz) and another funny thing is that that sketch turns 13 tomorrow lol

amazing video. I was 12 years old when this show came, it feels like yesterday that it was on the air. so it's rather interesting that people younger than me saw this as a "fever dream" show! some of the skits that lived rent free in my head was 'WWER' , a hybrid of the ''WWE'' and the medical show "ER". There was also 'Rejected Pokemon", that one i remember a lot because Punchachu's special ability being kicking was the funniest thing ever for me.

You say that Wolverine was a recurring character to appear in the show, that reminded me that The Hulk was another character they would usually do jokes based on.
Also Hulk was the protagonist of a running gag where he would smash onto other sketches asking for more time on screen.
As a little note, Hulk is my favorite super hero and I was really obsessed seeing him featured in other media. By the way, that joke of The Hulk not having enough screen time aged like fine wine!

The sketch that stood out in my mind was the Disneyland sketch where revealed secrets are "sniper-silenced" and the witness is distracted by a marching band while the CM victim is taken away and replaced with an animatronic. MAD magazines were always so fun to read as a kid
MADTV was the edgier alternative to SNL, and even though I shouldn’t have been watching it so young I found it funny
The CN MAD show gives me a lil’ tick of nostalgia, I was watching it in high school as it aired. And I can always appreciate a show that utilized multiple forms of animation.

i had a near identical experience to you with my dad and mad. made me nostalgic for being 10 and watching this with him 🥺 i do remember getting the magazine for the first time and seeing an ad for silly bands cond*ms and being HIGHLY confused and asking my friends on the bus what it meant and none of us knew
EDIT: i also have a memory of the first day of 6th grade and we were doing an ice breaker. you had to write your favorite show and match with someone that had the same as you. i said mad and no one had the same one. i got matched with the girl that said cake boss 😭

i loved MAD as a kid so much!!! Even though i live in south america and didn't understand a lot of the jokes, there were some i still understood because i had unrestricted internet access and learned english at a very young age, so i still got some laughs out of it

While the humor didn’t always hit, I really loved that they got so many animators and creators to make shorts for the show. Really made it feel like the magazine where they also got several cartoonists to contribute to the overall project.

MAD was such an odd part of my childhood lol, I only watched clips of it but whatever clips I watched just felt like some weird ass fever dream. I seriously wonder how kids watched that show and didn’t leave being utterly confused

18:23 I know I’m like super late about this, but the answer is yes! Every episode would start with the news bit. In fact every episode was formatted like this:
    - News
    - Part 1 of main parody
    - skits
    - a shorter parody
    - part 2 of main sketch
    - Skits
    - Spy Vs. Spy
    - Another short parody
    - Part 3 of the main sketch
This may be a reason why there were so many repeat cameos as they all might’ve been part of the same segment. The main skits also mainly featured celebrity cameos as well. It’s hard to find an actual full episode anywhere but I know for sure this is how they did it.
The reason why I remember this so vividly is because I watched it during an era where I was finally allowed to watch it as I was older and it was no longer making new episodes, but would play reruns late at night for older kids plus I remember watching them when on demand used to be a thing. The reason I wasn’t allowed it at first was because I got nightmares of the Bambi parody where his mom became a zombie lol.

My sister and I loved Mad. I remember we’d rewatch this one scene where Elmo gets stepped on over and over 😂 basically him walking up to some people and saying “Hey, everybody! Elmo wants to be your friend!” and one of the guys says “Yeah! Yeah! Let’s step on him!”. It was to reach something, for some reason.
Also SpongeWow. That just lives in my head.

I remember watching MAD whenever my Memaw had to watch me and my brother, mainly because we'd be in a different room with our own TV cause she only ever watched those TV Soap Dramas.
29 now (soon 30), and I remember owning several MAD comics myself although I'm afraid they've been lost to time. MAD was similiarly very influential for me, but I think Drawn Together and MAD were my two favourite shows "I shouldn't be watching"
DT is very dated, but I still find charm in it as much as I do MAD, as well as you had described so. Spy v Spy was the GOAT in my eyes tho, I hope they get along now-a-days.

19 years old too, my parents were stoners so as I got older the more weirder shows and adult swim esque content that I was able to watch grew. I think this probably peaked at Xavier Renegade Angel.

Thank you for covering this show! When it first came out, I was 6-7, and I remember watching every episode! I din't get most of the jokes at the time, but I LOVED it. I used to sometimes revisit this show with other shows I watched as a child (IE: Incredible Crew) because of how weird those shows were... They just, stood out to me in their humor and presentation. I had forgotten about this show for a while until now, but just sitting down to watch this and hearing the Spy VS Spy theme brought up so many memories...
Edit: Wait you're ALSO 19? I keep forgetting that a lot of the TH-camrs I watch are my age lmao

The news anchor segments were at the beginning of each episode and I believe were recorded within a week or two of the episode airing as I remember being impressed by how genuinely recent some of the real world events/things he would refer to as "Breaking news!" actually were. I'm pretty sure the last episode began with him making some sort of comment about it being the final episode of the show, as well, but don't quote me on that part.

I like all versions of MAD, the magazine, the sketch show and the cartoon.
I have all 103 episodes of it on my iTunes due to the fact only half of season 1 was released on DVD.
I would love to see it make a return and take on the shows that should be used in sketch shows.

  • @Saintnick90

I was born in 1990, so I actually did get a lot of the references. Even with that, I think the show was very hit or miss (which, honestly, is the same for about 99.9% of all sketch shows), but it was very clever when it hit. I actually think it captured the spirit of Mad Magazine a lot better than MadTV, which just used Mad iconography and some recurring features for the first few seasons but was just another sketch show. After a while, it basically became "Mad Magazine in name only." (It also had its moments though.)
I do think I would have still enjoyed Mad if it had aired when I was a kid, given how much I loved the magazine. The references probably would have gone over my head too, but I would have looked back at them later and thought "Oh, now I get it!" (The same could be said of shows like Animaniacs or Tiny Toon Adventures. I was still able to enjoy those shows as a kid, but they only got better when I revisited them years later because I now understood the references.)
Nice video. Brings back memories of when I briefly got back into watching Cartoon Network after more than a decade of drifting away from it.

Spy vs Spy has always been the best part of any version of MAD for me :>
I fucking adore those character designs and the whole premise was fun as hell.
I also fully agree that MAD needs a resurgence.
