      Hey man, when I have a stubborn restoration like this I use an auto detailing degreaser to remove adhesive and it works SO much better than the alcohol for these types of jobs. Night n day. It'll take all that adhesive/residue off in just a couple of wipes when using just a few sprays of this stuff on a cloth... It's powerful stuff and might damage things if left sitting on there for an extended period of time, but it's designed to wash away very easily so you just wipe over it with the alcohol right after and you're good to go... I've used it countless times on several different components and surfaces and I've never had a single issue. Works like a charm and is a complete game changer. You'll no longer "lose the will to live". Lol... I don't even worry about adhesive or stubborn residue anymore. It's fantastic stuff! Cheers.

    I find scrubbing the carbon button pads with first a wet cue tip and then a dry one leaves a nice matte finish that really improves the responsiveness of the button presses. They tend to get flat and shiny over time, which makes them less responsive. It takes some friction to really rejuvenate them.

    I tried cleaning the motherboard of my childhood GBC, and the speaker was what I was trying to clean and ended up causing some kind of issue to make it sound even worse after I put it back together. I wasn't doing a through clean, I was just using a Qtip to wipe out some of the dust but it didn't appear to like that. I thought I was being gentle... I'd love to restore my childhood GBA as well. If I ever get any soldering equipment maybe I could replace the old speaker in my GBC... maybe get a cheaper one and do the backlit screen mod.

    Not too long ago I picked up a DMG style Pocket that was supposedly "broken" -- at some point batteries leaked and ruined the battery contacts, but other than that I don't think it was really ever used (batteries must have leaked not too long after purchase). Button contacts looked pristine. I still need to solder a new battery contact in, but it works for now with a power adapter in the bottom

    Curious question, I have a PCNY GBA, its coloration is worn in a few spots. I wanna keep the original, official casing but I want to get it looking closer to new. Is there something I can do to get it looking newer without replacing the casing? Like a specific paint color I could use to patch the wear. Have a gold spray paint at home but it's a more vibrant yellow color while the console uses a duller and almost greenish tone.

    Interesting. I didn't know the Gameboy Light's had a grayscale screen. Is this one based off the Pocket?
    Question, how do you decide what is the proper contrast when aligning the polarizer film to the screen when the gamboy itself has a contrast wheel?

    • @eDoc2020
      @eDoc2020 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They're two different things. The polarizer alignment is all physical and changes the maximum contrast you can get. When it is properly aligned an undriven pixel will be as white as possible and a fully driven pixel will be as black as possible. If it's 45 degrees off both fully driven and fully undriven pixels will be the same gray (and in-between pixels will be lighter or darker, leading to strange effects). If it's 90 degrees off the colors will be inverted (this is half of the 'bivert' mod done on DMGs). Basically you want the lightest color when the device is off. You can't tell by eye but when this happens the polarization lines of both the front and back polarizers will be running in the same direction.
      The 'contrast' wheel, by comparison, adjusts the electrical drive. It's really more like the 'brightness' control on an old TV. If it's too low black pixels aren't fully on and if it's too high white pixels aren't fully off.

    Why do you use alcohol to remove adhesive? Alcohol doesn't break it down, you might as well be using water. If you have to use that much, that should be an indication that it's not working.
    Use lighter fluid. It breaks down the adhesive and makes it much, much, MUCH easier to remove. It'll likely only take a couple minutes to get it completely cleaned off.
