I messed around with the position with an engine, and it's even more impressive. Bf8 is actually met with Rb1 which attacks the queen. coz he can take 3 pieces for queen -> rook , then knight and then bishop.. 3 pieces for queen is considered better coz these people ( high rated folks) can hold back the queen with 3 pieces
I am going to go out on a limb and pick Ding to win - the longer the games go, the more games they have to play to determine the winner - i see the advantage for Ding - why? - because Nepo is in such terrible physical shape that i do not believe he has the endurance. After 5 straight draws, Magnus beat Nepo in an 8 hour match which physically and mentally depleted Nepo, he then fell apart and was awful in the remaining games and Magnus destroyed him to win the championship. Also, of the two Ding is more compelling in his shy way, while Nepo is devoid of personality, thus Ding would be far more embraced by the public and social media as Champion.
Basically he ends up ahead in material. My noob analysis: Sacrificing the queen lets Ding take pieces with the knight, nearly equalizing the material. He then skewers the queen and bishop with Rb1. Grischuk tries to attack the knight with Qc3, but he realizes it's futile when Ding plays Rc1 to cover, so he resigns. If Grischuk let it play out, his queen would have to move out of the way and Ding would take his bishop, giving Ding a 2 point lead in material. Additionally Ding would have his bishop and rook pairs intact in a better position.
