  • This Toyota 3.0 liter V6 1MZ-FE is in some of the most popular cars of its decade including Lexus RX300 and ES300, Toyota Camry, Highlander, Rav4 Sienna. Re-setting the timing belt is straightforward thanks to the timing marks provided on the belt and the ease of aligning the marks on the camshaft and crankshaft sprockets and pulleys. The timing marks on the camshaft pulleys and the rear timing cover, and the timing marks on the block and crankshaft pulley are shown in detail.

    Thanks, Frank! Yours is the first how-to vid I found that explains and notes the presence of two timing marks on the crankshaft end--one on the gear and one on the toothed backing plate. I kept looking at the mark on the gear only and wondering why that mark would not align with those on the camshafts. When I found the backing plate mark, everything came into alignment and made sense.

    Hi Frank, i have a Camry 2.5 V6, I'm trying to change my water pump but had a hard time taking out my main drive pulley bolt. Also, i think i misalign my front camshaft by a tooth , can i just rotate it back? Thanks

    • @Merryfrankster_
      @Merryfrankster_  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think you're talking about the crankshaft pulley bolt. These can be difficult to remove. There is a special tool that you can purchase or fabricate yourself that holds the pulley and crankshaft in place as you loosen the bolt. It fits into the two holes in the pulley. There are other backyard methods to loosen the bolt and you can look them up with a search. For the other thing, if one of the camshaft sprockets is off by a tooth, you can remove the belt, reposition the camshaft, and put the belt back on, making sure it matches up correctly. You may need to hold the camshaft in the correct position, by putting a wrench on its sprocket center bolt or flat spot of the camshaft, to work against the valve spring that it pushing it back the other way.

    • @Merryfrankster_
      @Merryfrankster_  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      If your engine is 1mz-fe 3.0 liter, it is non-interference, there will be no contact between pistons and valves if you rotate the crank, so you can rotate all you want. I have demonstrated this in a more recent video.

    Informative video. Is it imperative to ensure the #1 cylinder is on the compression stroke before changing the belt, or can any cylinder be on the compression stroke as long as both cams are set to their marks and the crank is aligned to it's mark after removing the belt and before installing the new belt?

    • @Merryfrankster_
      @Merryfrankster_  ปีที่แล้ว

      With a 1mz-fe which is a non-interference engine, you can rotate the camshafts and crankshaft however you want as long as you get them back in to the proper position when you install the belt. Not so with the 3mz-fe. You must exercise care or you may have valve-to-piston contact.

    hi frank! question, i’m doing a timing belt/water pump swap on a 3mz-fe engine. the crank & one of the cams is properly lined up for the timing belt placement but the 2nd cam is way off timing - i am afraid to turn it excessively because it pushes back when i try to move it and i don’t want to bend a valve/cause unnecessary engine damage. what are my options?

    • @Merryfrankster_

      Right now in my shop I have a 3mz highlander with 202,000 miles and a broken belt, and I also have a 1mz highlander with 192,000 miles on the original belt running fine. There are too many factors that can affect belt life, environmental factors, use factors, mechanical factors like oil leaks, it is unpredictable.

      I bought a 2002 sienna with 202k miles and the belt was done at 88k i have since put 10k more on the belt lol. I looked up if this engine was interference or not. Since it was not interence engine I just ran it. I have an aisin branded complete kit coming in as of now. These engines are awesome just make sure to keep oil and coolant topped off. I had a buddy with a 98 lexus 300 sedan with the same engine and it had 400k and the belt had probably not been changed in 200k miles lol it ran great until he sold it for scrap. Which he regrets heavily about doing. Keep oil changes done and coolant in it and they run forever.

    • @Merryfrankster_
      @Merryfrankster_  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      After you rotate the engine you check that the timing marks on the camshaft sprockets and the crankshaft sprocket all line up as they should.

    • @DavidParker-cf2km
      @DavidParker-cf2km 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Correct - they line up once, when you install the belt. When the engine is rotated those belt marks do not align anymore. The engine timing marks align with the sprocket every revolution of the crankshaft and the cam sprocket marks align once every two crank revolutions - it is a four cycle engine.
      I suppose the belt marks will align again in maybe 200 revolutions, but they are intended for installation alignment only to assure that all the slack is out of the belt: from the rear cam sprocket to the crankshaft it should be tight, all the slack taken at the dampener idler.

      The early 1mz-fe without vvti is non-interference. There is disagreement about the later (99+) with vvti. I have a old spare engine out in the yard, I will go spin the camshaft and see if the valve ever contacts the piston at tdc.
