I think that was a fan game made to be like the creepy pasta. Note the unlockable symbols in the save menu despite there being no mention in the story so you take the same path.

This was most likely a prank kyle did on tom. He was preparing this in 2 weeks, and broke in at night into tom's house, hid under his bed, waited in the living room for tom to finish the game, and finaly, at the round 2 screen, put the plush with red marker on his bed.
This whole sonic.exe thing actually scared me slightly when i was younger.
I dont know why, but it sure as hell took off when some guy named crimson or something like that created a game about the creepypasta, and that very game introduced me to the creepypasta fandom.

I like how it also has a community of its own, like there's a spin-off called Sally.exe which stars Amy Rose, Cream the Rabbit, and Princess Sally Acorn. And also a few fan games based on the franchise like Spirits of Hell, Blood Tears, Blood Scream, Tower of Millennium, etc.
Sonic.exe was one of the scariest creepy pastas for me when I was a kid. I was a huge fan of sonic when I was younger and when I saw sonic.exe it made me stop watching sonic X because the title sounded so much like sonic.exe

I for one admire the concept.
This gained popularity in the age of the internet where more kids were getting into it. They likely discovered someone playing one of the fan games or through other means. It probably scared them. It gained popularity among them, and creators realized they could get serious views off playing fan games based off the famous blood-eyed hedgehog. Soon, more EXE related stuff popped up, and soon the EXE fandom became a prominent part of the creepypasta fandom. People only like it due to their experiences with it, most of them kids from 2012-2013. Soon, the EXE craze would quickly die out, among both creators, and the general audience, but the fandom still clings, using it for fan art, can stories, and ships (yep). All in all, Sonic.EXE is an important piece of internet history, no matter how bad it is. It's one of those "cringe at it's finest things"

I think the thing that keeps Sonic.EXE alive is that, whilst the earlier creepypastas and rom hacks might be lame to some today, people are constantly expanding upon it and making it more terrifying so it will be remembered as the most famous video-game based creepypasta.

And both have fans trying to edgy and take these fictional characters to seriously and that they are real
Creepypasta are dead but the fandom toxicity can still be seen today
depressed Snowman The toxicity doesn't come from the fandom it comes from the sub-fandoms who ignorantly and blatantly plagiarize content that is literally so bad that it could make your eyes bleed, JC hyena rebooted the story (which exists to disregard the first story and to fix any errors the original story had) but the "community" is stubborn enough to overlook that his series has turned a new leaf. YW for the text wall but it needed to be said (it would have been longer than this but you get the idea.)
