  • To honor and celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary Marlo Thomas and Phil Donahue, in their first ever joint project, created a book together What Makes A Marriage Last: 40 Celebrated Couples Share With Us the Secret to a Happy Life.
They travelled the country “double dating” with other couples they admire and found their stories both surprising and inspiring, hilarious and heartbreaking but always bracingly honest and always uncovering that unique combinations of work and play, give and take, and sometimes conflict too that have torn many couples apart but only tightened the relationships for these couples and much to their own surprise they ended up telling their own marital journey something they always were reluctant to do. They say it’s not a “how to” but a “what” book-a collection of deeply personal and insightful tales.
In May 2020, Rob Reiner joined them for a talk about the book and their lives.

I thoroughly enjoyed this interview. I was so sad to hear about Phil Donahue's passing, and I send Marlo Thomas my deepest condolences. I understand that Phil had been ill for a while, so I hope they both had a chance to spend his last days in peace reminiscing about their lovely romance. Although I've been a widow for 14 years, I think this book sounds quite interesting. My husband and I married in our 30's. We never fought, but merely disagreed on certain things and had civil debates with each other. He was a lifelong conservative Republican, and I am a lifelong moderate Democrat. I often wonder what he would think about Donald Trump and the absolute destruction of his beloved GOP. The best thing about my husband was his humor and his fun-loving spirit. He always promised me that life with him would never be boring, and he more than kept his promise. I cherish our happy memories which continue to this day as he often visits me in sweet dreams. He was a life-long parrot head, and it makes me happy to think that he is jamming out in Heaven with Jimmy Buffett strummin' his six-string and eating cheeseburgers in paradise...fins up! 😎🌞🌊🌊🌊⛱

I loved his show. I recall clearly when the rules changed in daytime tv “ ratings at all costs” and Phil took the high road and consequently lost share to the likes of Geraldo and early Oprah and Maury and on and on. Seemed a shift towards increased vulgarity and sensationalism that frankly was a dress rehearsal for our current state of social media discourse RIP Phil. Good man

Love Phil & Marlo❤❤ I always watched Donahue's entertaining tv talk show. I think it was the 1st talk show on TV. Also I subscribe to "Good Pills...Bad Pills" which Donahue founded. Much respect & appreciation for Marlo's dedicated work for St.Judes Children's Hospital."That Girl" I'm enjoying your conversation. Young at heart you two are! ❤❤ God bless

Rob, your grandmother is correct. I met my husband of 30yrs when I just was not looking. With the chemistry, you just know.
