You have to give it to Phil. He held Clinton’s’ feet to the fire and if you’re running for President you have to be an open book. Clinton was forced to the center by strong leadership in congress via Newt Gingrich and the contract with America. Clinton also benefited from the aftermath of the Reagan era policies from the 1980’s, and a post Cold War world. That gave Clinton a lot flexibility to operate. Don’t get me wrong Clinton was a skilled politician and a good president, I liked him, but much of that success was due to the centrist approach he was forced to take, which was successful. Flawed character, but overall a good president.
