Mike was okay for the most part, but his random obsession with protecting Arvo over the rest of the group, stealing supplies from a literal little girl and a baby, along with him not caring that Clem gets shot, completely sinks his character.
@@Oh_Jams Even then Mike kinda cares and isn’t apathetic about it unlike Bonnie who if she’s upset about the Luke situation just doesn’t give a fuck that Clementine got shot. Man I just remembered how much I fucking hate Bonnie
The reason for his injured ear traces back to the original storyline in season 2. In Episode 1, when Clementine and Christa are ambushed by bandits in the woods, the group of attackers includes Ralph, Winston (who chases Clementine), and Victor (who later shoots Ralph and appears later in the story). Originally, Mike was intended to be Ralph’s character. During the scuffle off-camera-just after Clementine escapes-the idea was for Ralph to lose part of his ear. This detail would have added to the character’s backstory and explained his injury later in the story.
It's sad that Mike just like Nick also suffers from cut content he supports us until episode 5 where he then backstabs Clem and Kenny leaving them with no supplies, he also starts to attack Kenny like the others in the group and finally his obsession with Arvo was weird and never made sense which shows that he sadly suffered from bad writing. He could have had more potential and could have died trying to stop Kenny from fighting Jane what a waste of a character such a shame
The problem with Mike like are they didn’t bring nothing to the table and Mike is significantly up there and didn’t have a defining goal or motive to survive Carlos and Sarah brought the daughter and father dynamic of what happens when you shelter a kid too long and doing the wrong things for the right reasons Carlos motive is protecting his daughter and Sarah being a good daughter doing what her father tells her to stay safe Kenny is a man who constant deals with loss and loses more of his control over his emotions more and more as the apocalypse takes a toll and starts to feels disconnected with everyone besides Clem and AJ His new goal is to protect Clem and AJ Luke and Nick were business partners/friends and reminded us of a older brother (Luke) to younger brother(Nick) dynamic And Luke’s purpose is to keep those he loves alive being his group and Nick is to overcome his personal problems and coming to terms with his misguided mistakes and doing better Alvin is to protect Rebecca And Vice versa since they have a kid along with way Enough motive there Meanwhile there’s Mike Who just happened to tagged along because he didn’t like being in carvers as much as the others But he feels very bland till they gave him a slight tweak of his pacifist side of trynna protect Arvo from Kenny’s brutality Which comes out of nowhere Since there’s nothing given to us about mikes backstory or any crucial clues to know the type of person Mike was outside of s few jokes and funny remarks he made that dont add up leading up to the moment he started sympathizing with Arvo and his actions then after The best characters Are always those who feel authentic and real with their struggles and their behaviors changing because of their struggles and experiences for better or for worse and there’s no indication for mikes behavior in the final episode And he just feels like a background character just there to further the plot
Idk why but it weirdly feels to me like Mike is meant to be a mirror to Lee with them both being black, both having super similar personality types and a lot of wit, both being pretty standoffish at first with a mysterious past but eventually becoming the heart of the group, both being strong and doing things to help rather than out of selfishness and the intention was that it would TRULY hurt the player seeing someone so kind and nice attempt to abandon you. But S2 being S2 it definitely fucked that up near the end since Mike WAS nice but it never really felt like he was close at all with Clem and he didn't get ANYTHING compared to the others in the last episode outside of the campfire scene. Players never made a connection with him and his callousness of not giving a shit 50% of the time when Clem got shot drags him down a lot. Could have been a heartbreaking mirror to Lee if they focused on him and Clem more and his betrayal would have been a perfect start to the bleakness of the finale with Kenny vs Jane.
Tbh I didn't see the similarities either until this review highlighted how witty and helpful Mike was to the rest of the group and how he's got a generally mysterious backstory which makes it hard to guess if he's gonna be a help or not. Wish they went into his backstory, have it be similar to Lee. I would have loved a scene where Clem has to keep it together hearing Mike's backstory realising just HOW close it is to Lee's. Would be cool if after she starts to put a lot of trust in him as if he's a new father figure. Maybe even have Luke die earlier so Clem is kinda stuck between Mike and Kenny (slowly being drawn into Mike as Kenny only gets more and more violent with Arvo showing she's still a scared kid at heart despite how cold and cool she's trying to be) would make the ending a whole lot better imo with having to shoot Kenny and leave Jane to go off alone (yes I see Clem shooting Kenny and going off alone as the canon ending lmao)
I appreciated him at first but he was kind of similar to Bonnie , both of them expected a child to make grown adult decisions which is honestly what Clem was doing cause we control her. The difference is even tho he was weirdly constantly defending Arvo (cause this was really giving backstabbing dummy fr), he genuinely cared for Clem at some point before the betrayal. I believe Bonnie never did , Clem was just a tool for her.
A thing thats been pointed out too is the possibility mike was one of the scavengers in the beginning with christa considering one of them uses the same model of mike but with the hood up. I think specifically the one that said "cut the sh*t out lady" pointing a gun at christa But it could just have been a tell tale reuse of skin. If it was on purpose though it could be a foreshadow to mike betraying the group with bonnie in the end
Enjoyed the video, I like Mike too, it's too bad he went from being really helpful and unintentionally funny to an annoying character who betrays you in the end. Looking forward to your next vid!
@FatedTalons ANF actually did something with their characters, they just did it in the wrong way. S2 brought up story arcs that were useless and were never acknowledged again
I feel like they should’ve had Mike be with the Cabin group and be Alvin’s brother or cousin. Instead of constantly meat riding Arvo, have him be a little wary but against Kenny’s violence. Also, instead of leaving the group, he wakes up alongside Clementine and they both hold Arvo and Bonnie at gunpoint and when Arvo begins to aim his rifle at Clementine, he shields her with his body and gets shot in the chest, dying but saving Clementine’s life.
I never saw it as Russians and Arvo and his sister being druggies which definitely recontextualizes the confrontation. I just thought that his sister is actually sick, but is well enough to try and at least help out. Man am I blind and naive...
Actually Arvo's sister becomes a walker (showing up at the fight still), if you take the medicine from Arvo, so she was probably actually sick, just the person who made this video didn't do that choice/path yet.
Arvo's sister was confirmed by the writers to actually be chronically ill and needed the meds to help with the pain. Originally Arvo's crew were meant to be Carver's crew instead. Mike turned teams with Arvo because Kenny always gave Mike a hard time since they met. Mike tried helping Kenny with barricading the store, but Kenny didn't want to submit to Carver's will after they had killed Walt and ruined their home at the lodge. Kenny always had a habit of keeping his past amongst himself and those he was closest with for whatever reason. Not only that but there are multiple times where Mike had to cover for Kenny whenever there were walkers. By the final episode, Mike was just done with Kenny. I could see where Mike was coming from but personally, I couldn't care less about what happened with Mike. Originally, Mike was meant to be one of the bandits that attacked Christa at the beginning of the game. Christa would've shot Mike in the face after Clementine ran away. The main issue is that the writers kept getting switched around episode to episode, so a lot of the story was lost. Mike was originally supposed to come clean about what happened with Christa in episode 4 but two writers from TWAU were assigned to that episode instead.
I forgot all about Mike and the Arvo characters. Its been years since i played TWD! But yeah, Mike definitely would've been a nice Stand in for Lee for Clem, cuz he was funny at times, carefree and helpful. But the writers F that all up!! I always thought of S2 to be so damn traumatic! That's probably why i never did another playthrough
If they continued with new protagonist for each seasons i thought following Mike and arvo would be such an interesting story. Just how his departure from the party with someone who isn't really trustable would make for a cool dynamic
Mike being a very similar character or Lee is what got Mike to be a fan favorite/high expectations given they about same race, age, personality, and wanting to help. Him and Bonnie going against Kenny saying he’s been “through a lot” just pisses me off. Like Arvo tried to ambush U, strip U of supplies and weapons and planned to leave you in the cold with nothing. Along with Arvo’s group being perfectly healthy and a very active age range (20-35). Clem’s group is with a Baby, just off pregnancy Rebecca, and a wounded Luke. And Mike can’t say he’s been through a lot with Kenny. Literally KENNY LOST KATJA, DUCK, LEE, SARITA, and WALTER. Also with the loss of last 2 being from Luke’s group being the drama and fiasco to them without them telling him there being hunted. When Kenny said U’r safe here. He meant from the cold and walkers. NOT A WHOLE ASS CARTEL GROUP ON THE HUNT WITH AK’S. Sorry about all the rant 😭
Talk about Louis man, whenever I hear the word the walking dead, I immediately think of him, he’s just that one character you hoped he never died, the amount of emotions I have for Louis, is comparable to lee’s, poor kid man he died because of a fucking kid not jumping. i always found season two to be a bit of a metaphor for a destroyed family mike, bonnie and KINDA arvo are a family that abandons clem, A LITTLE GIRL and her little brother in this case, AJ (we'll just call them like a niece and nephew) when they need them most, leaving them with their toxic parents (kenny and jane) eventually clem has to make a choice on who to side with, you kinda get it
I think another character that had massive potential since season one was duck, he had potential and thanks to what if he survived, it makes you wish he did survive.
Ralph (one of the bandits from the woods with Christa);was originally going to be Mike. According to Dan White, When Christa goes to run away, Victor accidentally shoots Mike(Ralph) in the ear trying to shoot clem, and would have a chunk of his ear missing, making him recognizable to Clem, thus Clementine would be apprehensive and untrusting of him because of what they did to Christa in the woods. Mike has in game files unused where he wears his hoodie up JUST like Ralph as well. The entire s2 was rushed and many things were changed from the original plans. Like Christa was going to have Jane's character arc but through her own traumas (her group, omid, the baby). The CEO scrapped the OG script and made his own.... But it was so bad they scrapped that too so management took it out on the CEO through the game with very petty behavior. Hence why we got Arvo ...
A grown man (Kenny) constantly beating a teenage boy is not okay. Just abandon him not beat him half to death and moments later the supplies were there and Kenny doesn’t apologize or anything.
Anyone else when they think of Mike think of that weird edit that was made a while back when TH-cam poop was still a thing and when Clem tells Mike to help Kenny he runs away after saying on it

(I mean I remember seeing speculation that he was one of the guys who raided Clementine and Christa's camp but that's not canon).
Do something about Mark or Conrad. Mark had little character in season 1 just to show that SOMETHING happened in the three months of the apocalypse, and why Conrad’s wife, Francine, had to go, making Conrad absolutely useless for the rest of the episode 2.

Carlos and Sarah brought the daughter and father dynamic of what happens when you shelter a kid too long and doing the wrong things for the right reasons
Carlos motive is protecting his daughter and Sarah being a good daughter doing what her father tells her to stay safe
Kenny is a man who constant deals with loss and loses more of his control over his emotions more and more as the apocalypse takes a toll and starts to feels disconnected with everyone besides Clem and AJ
His new goal is to protect Clem and AJ
Luke and Nick were business partners/friends and reminded us of a older brother (Luke) to younger brother(Nick) dynamic
And Luke’s purpose is to keep those he loves alive being his group and Nick is to overcome his personal problems and coming to terms with his misguided mistakes and doing better
Alvin is to protect Rebecca
And Vice versa since they have a kid along with way
Enough motive there
Meanwhile there’s Mike
Who just happened to tagged along because he didn’t like being in carvers as much as the others
But he feels very bland till they gave him a slight tweak of his pacifist side of trynna protect Arvo from Kenny’s brutality
Which comes out of nowhere
Since there’s nothing given to us about mikes backstory or any crucial clues to know the type of person Mike was outside of s few jokes and funny remarks he made that dont add up leading up to the moment he started sympathizing with Arvo and his actions then after
The best characters
