N Texan here, and I typically wait until after Valentines Day. In the last few years, there can still be a cold spell with freezing temps, sometimes ice and sleet. So we wait. After that, the temps stay stable and can prune the roses and crepe myrtles.

My neighbor has a rose that her mother brought over from Germany! She was born in early 1940, so, you can guess why they left their home. So lovely to see it bloom, and the scent is intoxicating.
May you find peace and comfort in growing those plants in your mother's honor. 🤗🌹

Jenny, I'd call YOU the generous gardener for how well you teach us to maintain our gardens. 🙂
In Minnesota, we haven't had snow cover for quite a while. I mean, we were up to the mid 50s this week! So, it's really difficult to restrain myself from getting out there and start cleaning up, trimming up my garden.
But, I can hear, What would Jenny say? "Hold off because you still have months of winter."
I asked a clerk at Lowe's the other day when their garden center opens and I found she was a kindred spirit. We're all antsy to get gardening.
I would like to get the jump on the season by working on a hardscape project. I'm going to place square concrete pavers in a checkerboard style in my weedy gravel garden path. Maybe less surface will keep the weeds more manageable.
Ooh! I'm getting so excited to get outside. 😃

I live in Louisville, KY. I usually wait until early March to do my late winter pruning. Because we live in a transitional area of the country (not really in the south, but not really in the midwest), our winter to spring weather patterns can change from year to year. Some years give us a cold and wet March, while other years provide early warm temps. It is a guessing game every year. We are currently experiencing a very warm February. But March could be a different story. My plans could change.

I am guessing my back yard rose is like your rose on the arch due to the extremely large canes and side shoots except it has little red roses. The previous owners took out the octagon pergola instead of replacing it. I know this because I found photos of the back yard they left behind. I believe it rotted, so they chopped all the roses to make it look presentable to sell. I am finding roses growing out from the center of my hydrangeas and long cane roses up by my front door with no supports that have big wicked thorns…in and out throughout high maintenance flower beds. I am zone 8b in Western Washington outside of Seattle. So much rain and black spot issues.

Jenny thank you for this video. Roses never were my favourite. When I moved to this house I pulled out what I could, but over the years some suckers are coming up and I decided that, since they are old, don’t know the variety, I want them to grow. Question is how do I prune these since they aren’t that tall yet?

I just love your channel. Always so helpful. I have 14 David Austins going on their 3rd year so this video was so helpful and timely.
QUESTION: I digress but I'm curious about your potting machine. Does it wet down your soil as it fills the pots to moisten it? I have a small nursery and farmstand and I know if I put the soil in my pots dry it repels the water the first few times till the soil gets soaked so I always have to mix some water with it before it goes in the pot. Just curious.❤😊

I’m in zone 7b and I’ve had a knockout rose for a long time. I’ve had no issues pruning that rose but I added a Zephirine Drouhin climbing rose and a Jacqueline du Pre shrub rose to my garden last year. Since these are baby plants, do I need to prune them at all? They didn’t grow a ton for me last year. Both were transplanted during the season.

Close ups would have been nice as you were pruning your climber-it was filmed from a distance. You showed a small section afterwards. A little confusion for beginners. Some don’t understand the old wood, damaged, new or what the disease may look like that needs to be cut out.
Hope you don’t take that as a criticism because it isn’t meant that way; I think some of us just need clarification. Thank you for all your hard work and passion…you keep a beautiful inspiring garden and attitude!
