  • The cactus fruit is indeed full of valuable substances for our body and exceptionally sweet and tasty. The plant that produces it, is a prolific one that produces many fruits from every single shovel: the Opuntia ficus-indica.
Despite its name, the Opuntia ficus-indica is not from India but from South America, like all other cacti, especially from central Mexico. It has spread very quickly, though, in Asia as well as in some areas of Africa and Europe (in Europe has been acclimatized particularly well in South Italy and the Canary Islands) and maybe his name is the sign of an intermediate step in its spread before coming to the old continent.

I picked these fruits in the Bahamas and took them back to our sailboat. I scooped out the pulp and smashed it through a colander and discarded the seeds. I added water and honey to the pulp. Delicious! We had some left over, so we put it in a rinsed out milk jug for later. But we forgot about it for several days. The jug had swelled up, and when opened a lot of gas came out, and there was some foam floating on top of the liquid. I thought it had gone bad, but my friend was raised in the country in Belgium, and he said we should check it out. We tasted it, and it turned out to be a nice fermented beverage with a bit of a kick to it. A happy discovery!

I have a garden here in Virginia of them . I bought two loads from a lady about 30 minutes away for 60 bucks and planted them . They are growing strong . They spread too!

@@tabithacarroll8618 yeah they can also grow from the roots but I'm not sure how fast, that's amazing how resilient they are and how much you can do with it. I'd love to grow some cactus they use for fiber/ropes.
