Although not the same species of cactus, here in Mexico is really common to see Opuntia cacti or Prickly Pear Cactus, colloquially named "Nopal". A lot of the times its grilled to give it a better flavor but it can also be eaten raw (without the spines of course). Good source of manganese, vitamin C, antioxidants and calcium.
It is very popular in Chicago.... I like the fruit [tuna] both red and white but I really don't like the cactus..... It is slimy like okra but it is very popular.
Nopal Cactus is very common in Texas as well. My grandparents used to have it growing in their backyard. They would de-spine it, boil it it, chop it up and throw it in tacos.

Funny,but dont mean to be that guy,but cactuses grew spines not to ward away predetors but mainly to reduce water loss via transpiration of water vapor.
Typically, cactus is not a safe substitute for portable water. Drinking cactus water, especially on an empty stomach, can cause severe diarrhea and vomiting, leading to more dehydration. However, in extreme situations, you can always have a few sips from the fishhook barrel cactus. This is the only cactus that is safe to drink water from but make sure you ingest only small amounts of the water.
Interesting. Any scientific studies you have read about this? Doesn’t sound logical with millions of people buying flat cactus in stores and eating them.

Cactus/Nopal is eaten regulary in TX and can be found chopped in many grocery stores around large hispanic communities. U can cook nopal in a little oil, salt, salsa verde, add some eggs and u got some good tacos.

Or simply find two stones to grab it up by squeezing cactus between those stones, then find another useful and sharp stone piece, use it as a knife. Done. IQ level has reached to %850

Just remember that not all cacti are safe to eat, it’s much safer to just collect different cacti fruit if possible and eat them, a lot of cactus inside can contain toxins or other harmful substances

exactly, I was about to say this, but you commentd this before me. In the mexican desert, we have a ton of variants, most of them, highly toxic, at very least, you'll get really high if you happen to gulp in a cactus if you dont know which ones to pick, a mexican cactacea know as "nopal" is non toxic and very rich in water, but you're soon to need a very intense dose of sugar, since the cactacea species tends to capture both lipids and sugars, so, its basically...
youre gonna be fine waterwise, but yourre going to start going nuts or die of low blood preassure if your body isnt used to having low levels of sugar in your blood stream.
I once ate an entire kilo of nopal, ended up having the shakes for sugar about an hour later.
think twice before feasting in any cactus.
