      I mean there are real groups that conspire though. If you leave the power to others you end up with light bulbs that dont last 30 years. Run OONI and see all the stuff that other places restrict and track. If you dont have at least a minimal plan including cell tower issues, meta servers acting up, etc its just not a great way to be resilient and sends the message that entities that they can low ball you and everyone else.
      If your friend wants to consent fine but its like taking the first salary offer and forcing people around you to settle as well. Even if they don't care about the privacy their data may become more valuable and garner a higher price be it directly or by forcing other developers to reconsider enshitifacation. That is something that doesn't rely on a drastically different world view and practical paranoia.

    There's some good tips in here, but I've come across a roadblock before: if you are not popular enough in your friend group (the thought leader that people look to), you will have a much harder time.
    There was a time when, through internal and external factors, I was popular in my friend group. That friend group has since disbanded and I do not have any pull in any sizeable social circle.
    If no one cares to get ahold of you, then no one cares if you make yourself hard to reach.
    In other words, you have to have more, or at least equal, power in a two-way dynamic (friendship or acquaintanceship). If you're the one who wants the other's time/attention, you'd have quite a hard time convincing them of anything.

      I strongly agree. Naomi has social leverage so she can make her contacts switch messaging apps. You and I can't force others to switch. Our friends and family will either get mad or even leave us alone if we try what Naomi preaches here. She doesn't understand what it's like to be a nobody in this world.

      @edthelazyboy "she doesn't understand what it's like to be a nobody in this world"? No one is a nobody. You have to find people who want to be your genuine friend and vice versa. The situation you described means those aren't your real friends. Simple. Real friendship groups don't have a "popular" one and vice versa this isn't high-school. Only surface level friendships have that kind of system.

    First off, much appreciate you and your work as always! You make information easy to understand for people who aren’t techies.
    Funny story, I work in DoD, and we have a yearly cyber awareness training course to take. It’s typically pretty decent for the normies. But this year, the devs redid it to be more “fun and accessible “, and it’s terrible. It looks all pastel colored and is almost like a game of star dew valley lol. The sounds…I thought my co worker was playing chumba casino or something. It’s so childish looking now and I feel like it isn’t even taken seriously.
    Anyway, those who care will take action. The rest will learn the hard way. Thanks again!

    its definatly difficult to get my friends to switch. The most popular phase I hear is "I have nothing to hide. Why should I be concerned?". Its hard at times to make them understand how important privacy is. We live in a world thats aggeresivly gearing towards what I refer to as a "George Orwell Was right" situation. A firghtening thought at best. I remember what happens when a country goes from a democratic republic to a fascist regime. On September 11 1973 Chile transionted from a democracy to an Authortarian rule in a military coup overthrowing a democratically elected president, Salvador Allende. Then it was too late for people to protect themselves from the aggresive government now in power. People were jailed and some executed for a simple comment or opinion that even slightly opposed the new regime. Its well known that the US was very involed in that experiment. A system they came up with in which the united states goverment wanted to see just how quickly this decline of democracy could be achieved. They refer to it as "Social Engineering". Few people seem to see it is becoming possible in places once thought impervious to such tactics. Thanks for what you do to help us protect ourselves

    People happily use whatever lazy, convenient, invasive, non-secure stuff already "just works" on their devices. Calls and texts are a pervasive, inescapable part of daily life.
    If I offer my friends and families replacements then 1) they have to "just work" without any effort, 2) they can't involve any tech savvy or tinfoil hat stuff because normal people don't care, and 3) they can't impose limits or restrictions compared to what's already built into the phones.

    It's funny that we went from the telegraph to the telephone, then back to the telegraph. And if people don't mind typing words all day long, why won't they write emails? (I just tried to add Signal for desktop, and a warning came up "Signal setup exec could harm your device. Do you want to keep it anyway?" What do you make of that?)

    Random counter-argument (just as a thought exercise, and I will probably word itso poorly as to unintelligible, but...) - If all the rational people "go dark," then the dark forest algorithms will be overtaken by the madness that remains. Will hiding risk the hastening of the next dystopia?

    • @pixelfairy
      @pixelfairy 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It would be a positive shift of the Overton window. It would be well known that most conversations are hidden, so any move to exposed platforms would be resisted. Those few still exposed would, being the last targets left, be quickly incentivised to take care of that. And probably helped by those close to them if they're lucky enough to have anyone.

    • @edwinphilips5212
      @edwinphilips5212 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      So, either I butchered my explanation, or I am missing something in your response. Let me try to break down my thinking better. First- an assertion: Social Media corps profit from engagement. Fear and sensationalism are effective tools of engagement, Thus are incentivized. Given this, as rational people disengage, what is left is the more extreme parts of the population in the roles of content creators and engagers. With the rise of (pseudo) AI, which essentially works as a feedback loop, based on existing content, the now unchecked extreme fringes will further polarize, driving towards a dystopian chaos. Disclaimer: I work in IT (OT technically), but list "author" as a hobby (which I hope will become more than a hobby in time), and I am currently working on writing a pre-apocalyptic conspiracy series, so my thinking is very likely tainted by that research :-).
