    Naomi, I have been a computer tech for 45 years. I have watched 3 of your videos absolutely love the way you present them. You get information across so well and still manage to bring a smile or laugh with it. Something I try to get through to my clients is that they can have a secure system or one that is easy to use, and they just need to decide where they want to be on that line

      I would say it is not just a straight line. If you say people are either stupid or clever, then yes. But the world is not so simple. And security is one of the most complex issues since the first trade, whatever colour you perceive it. It is ingrained in everything since Darwin's beautiful tortoises until the Wow! signal. Clients and cow orkers should be slapped with security, it is way too relaxed. Anytime, anyplace soon.

    Is ad tracking and data collection a serious matter or simple inconvenience? Today, we have the luxury of being able to debate this. Tomorrow, we may not.
    We need people like Naomi bringing privacy issues into the light and making people aware. We DO NOT want privacy matters festering in the darkness where govt and corp can do whatever with impunity.

    It's funny. My Android phone doesn't automatically connect to my home wifi. I have to keep doing it myself which is nice. I use a military grade Faraday bag to put my phone in when traveling. Zucky can't triangulate me that way. Why? To deny him data.

    that’s an excellent summary intro of what it takes.
    visiting an apple store may require you to be more nondescript because their security cameras store footage for an indeterminate amount of time - possibly forever. also, if they won’t let you set up your computer there, the wifi is free that you can do it outside the store - if not at another public wifi.
    there are other small details on getting around certain hurdles you mentioned, but would expand the scope and make the video longer. good job in keeping it straight to the point.

    Great video and advice. Quick question. Is tor better than vpn for overall privacy in general web browsing during and after setting up a new device?

    • @NaomiBrockwellTV
      @NaomiBrockwellTV  3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Tor is great, because the only one who sees your IP is the entry node, and they don't see where you're going, so it's far more anonymous than a VPN. Just be careful with Tor tho, especially with crypto transactions, because a few months ago there was a report about exit node being captured and hackers stealing people's funds by rerouting them to phishing sites instead of where they wanted to go.

    Excellent video! I try to make my privacy a major priority; however, many of the more comprehensive strategies often break specific accessibility features. I need these to work since my eyesight is failing; among the most privacy violating features, I regularly make use of Siri, dictation, TTS, and several others. I've also recently started using AirTags since I frequently lose things. I bring all of this up, because it is a problem to which there is not yet a privacy oriented solution; well, at least not one that I'm aware of, but I'm sure someone has a bit more experience with this than myself.

    I am really resonating with taking steps to get some privacy back, but the level of “fight” required in this video, is too much for a family to take in one step. I am going to start with the easy stuff, fire wall, proton mail and vpn, turn off wifi on my phone, and even going to purchase a pixel phone and put graphene on it. Small steps. Hopefully in a couple of years I can get the whole family there.
    By the way, Naomi, i have been listening to a lot of your videos, do you have one where you talk about threat models and maybe the combination of actions that are required to lower your risk to let’s say “tight” level. For example what are the combination of actions that when taken would lower your risk significantly against the threat of a person driving down the street looking to hack into your wifi?
    Thank you so much for all your work. You have educated me so much. Thank you!

    Thank you Naomi I’ve learned so much from your videos. You have helped me so much in being self aware of my privacy. I’ve been targeted from hack attacks, from my phone being hacked and taking full control of it. Once I was In a hotel in Morocco and found a picture of me in my gallery standing front a mirror and fixing my hair. My phone took a picture of me. Since then I’ve been scared and worried about leaving my phone unattended. Since then I changed my phone changed my phone number and made it private, got 2nd number in a 2nd phone giving to everyone else. Now my question is how to prevent being tracked by phone number ? I mean can I still be tracked of location just using 4G ? Or having phone on ?? Pls make a video about 4G and number location tracking.

    This video was published before Apple's 2021 developers conference (WWDC21), but at that conference Apple has now made some of the functionalities of Siri work on device, like "Turn on airplane mode", "Open dark mode", "play this on my locally downloaded playlist", etc. And they've made data collection for Siri improvements an opt-in/out thing (don't know if they by default enable it, or let you disable it right when you purchase an Apple device, have to check) back in Oct. 2019. Before that "Apple collecting your voice records even when you're not using Siri" scandal surfaced, they were giving that data (though, with rotating identifiers instead of your on ID) to third party contractors as well, again, for Siri improvements, but when they scandal got onto news in July 2019 Apple paused that in Aug. and Sept. 2019, before making the analysis of those voice recordings completely in the company itself and giving you the option to opt out anymore in Oct. 2019. Apple by no means is perfect in terms of privacy, but wanted to point that out.

    Great video I had a question though for more privacy is there a antenna that I could buy to place in my house to pick up the Wi-Fi signal from say McDonald's that's a half a mile down the street or another free Wi-Fi can you give me a link and a description thank you I appreciate it and also with the antenna I want it to be just the antenna because I cannot use the router or modem in the house I live in so just to plan antenna that'll pick up the signal

    • @Ck87JF
      @Ck87JF 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      This comment being a month old, you probably got your answer elsewhere. In case you haven't: there are such devices as "directional" wifi antennas, which can pick up data from quite long distances away. Two catches to that for your scenario, though: 1/ You'd have to point the antenna pretty accurately to hit their wireless access point 2/ directional antennas over long distances usually need a second directional antenna, so that they both point at each other. If properly lined up, your directional antenna can "hear" the McDonalds antenna, but when you go to transmit, your signal is going to be way too weak for McDonalds to hear it on their end.

    Good evening!
    I need help. Appears to be some form of spyware on my I phone where every time I look at the screen, someone’s calling or I get these “scam calls” coming in also. They even have the ability to disconnect my music apps while playing. How can I :
    Identify the malicious app 2: remove 3: prevent it from happening again. Thanks!

    Thank you for this video. What about all your neighbour’s broadcasted SSIDs? If your device can capture these SSID names, VPN or no VPN, your neighbourhood or approximate location is given away and if GPS is on - it’s a giveaway.
    Better to be wired Ethernet + VPN. But I think more and more that privacy is a thing of the past; in this digital age it is no more or seriously compromised.
    Also what do we know about the M1 line of CPUs? Do they have an equivalent « intel management engine »?

    It cant just be for advertising either. Only thing I keep landing on is for control, which that in itself is a whole different realm of wtf's.

    • @NaomiBrockwellTV
      @NaomiBrockwellTV  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You mean the world of advertising is a realm of wtfs? Yeah the business model of the internet is the antithesis of privacy currently. Hopefully that can change.

      @@NaomiBrockwellTV lol. I meant that theres no way all this surveillance is purely for advertising. Which naturally made me wonder what it was for. No matter which way i tried to pull different reasons in, they always landed in the same place. Its obvious the govt isnt trying to sell me consumer goods.. the govt is watching us for control (were my thoughts). Which THAT scenario is a whole 'nother realm of wtf's.
