@unholydonutsreally depends on your existing system and hardware. A lot of Dell and Alienware laptops actively try to prevent you from installing Linux, and some software companies like Adobe are hostile to it. However, if you're willing to go all-in and remember to do regular backups or set it up to regularly back up things automatically, like on Mint, it's extremely easy for the average user just browsing the web, watching videos, listening to music and reading ebooks. It plays most Steam games without any problem too. Advanced users, however, may find it a bit more difficult to get used to the different advanced features.

It's great to see Linux getting more attention over the last few years, the desktop experience has come so far, my personal favourites are Arch and Fedora, they're not for anyone brand new to LInux because they need a little configuring, especially Arch, but they both have very upto date kernels and software available in their repositories, they run very smoothly and fast, they need a little bit of tweaking if you want to game too but the documentation on the internet is huge for them so it's not that difficult to find solutions for any problems.

    • @terminallyonline5296

I would like to add in that Fedora is just around as easy to set up as Ubuntu but because it uses a different package manager (package managers were something not talked about) than Ubuntu, Debian, Mint, Pop!_OS and so on, it can be a little trickier to use until you learn DNF instead of APT.

    • @jessieneurotica7433
      @jessieneurotica7433 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

@@terminallyonline5296 DNF isn't that different in use from APT, but the fact that Fedora doesn't ship some popular media codecs or enable RPM Fusion and Flathub out of the box is kinda questionable to me. However, Nobara is a Fedora-based distro that comes with all of that done out of the box PLUS a lot of tweaks that help with gaming and streaming as well. not to mention, it is maintained by Glorious Eggroll, a talented dev from Red Hat who also maintains ProtonGE. switched to it from Arch after glibc broke EAC for Proton.

@@jessieneurotica7433 I've not used Fedora yet but as far as I'm aware Fedora is a distro designed to be 100% open source out of the box, as in everything that comes pre packaged with it is open source which would probably explain why some popular media codecs aren't packaged with it by default. Those media codecs are probably closed source

A couple of other things to note. Linux Mint has two bases for their distro. A Debian based version (LMDE), and an Ubuntu based version. Also, the Ubuntu based version removes a lot of the Ubuntu base features that some find "objectionable" such as snaps. You can add them if you wish, but they don't come installed. Thus Linux Mint is usually lighter than Ubuntu itself. Great info here.

It's a nice video, has lots of info in it useful for people not familiar to Linux. Agree with most of the points. Some remarks however.
    - It would be fair to state it's called GNU+Linux. Now Torvalds gets ALL the credit while he developed the kernel, the kernel of itself is not enough for an entire OS. Stallman's contribution is not really mentioned (the GNU utilities), only that he called out the Ubuntu spyware - About the full disk encryption, Fedora for example also supports LUKS out of the box - No mention of Valves Steamdeck which is the big reason for the gaming on Linux push lately?

When I switched to Linux I reasoned that the best distro for me as a beginner would be one that forced me to learn, so I went with Arch. While I did use KDE at first, after about six months I decided that I wanted a tiling WM and when buying a new laptop I selected Xmonad for my fresh Arch installation, this time with full disk encryption. Setting it up and configuring was a progress, where I got a basic setup that I improved as needed over time, but for me it was well worth it. I now have a system that I am comfortable with and that I really enjoy using, and along the way I learned a lot. Nowadays I just do some tweaks every once in a while, but really it runs the way I want :)

I still have to install/update common software using CLI. It's ridiculous!

This was a really great overview. The one thing you might want to add is on the downside: if you are strongly invested in particular software for Windows/Mac (e.g. Adobe apps, Final Cut, MS Office...), then you may find the switch hard work - you'll need to find and learn open source alternatives that work on Linux. This can be a good thing because the alternative will offer you freedom, but there will be a learning curve and you have to be ready for this. This said, personally, I now mainly use Linux for everything, and love it as an operating system, and I love the range of software available for it - I've never enjoyed using a computer as much. My recommendation is that it is worth the work in making the switch, but you should still expect to have to put in a little time and effort to do so!

A retired teacher who saw Mint on my systems is begging me to replace her Win11. And yes, I like Mint so much I donate to the cause. I started with ubuntu around 2010 but I couldn't change then because it was too difficult for me, so I remained in Windows. Over the years, as I was getting more experience with computers, the transition to Linux was simply the next logical step, especially because I don't need to buy a new computer every four or five years. I can use older hardware with the best performance. I use LXDE 32 bits in the notebook and the Pentium 4, Pop OS in the laptop and in my newest computer, Linux Lite in the HP and I have Windows 10 in the gaming computer because there is still certain sofware in the official websites of the Spanish government that is not yet fully compatible with Linux.

I am still not sure why Ubuntu is so popular. Its what I was told to start with too, and I still don't like it... it almost made me give up Linux altogether. Manjaro saved me though, was a lot more user friendly and everything just worked. I don't use it any more, but after Ubuntu and a few other distros, its the one that let me stick to Linux and learn enough to love it. So if anyone is trying things out, don't get frustrated or form opinions based off just 1 distro, no matter how 'popular' it is, because there are a lot of differences between them.

I've been using Linux since 2016 starting off with Ubuntu 16.04 and absolutely fell in love with it cos not only does Linux have much better privacy and security but even the most bloated distros are still lighter than Windows and i also love just how insanely customisable it is with a wide variety of desktop environments and window managers each of which you can easily change the look and feel of. Unfortunately Ubuntu has gone downhill since then with Canonical becoming more shady and trying to shove snaps down everyone's throats so now i use Fedora 36 (Mate spin) on my HTPC and Debian 11 with XFCE on my laptop.

I've been using Devuan Linux (fork of Debian without Red Hat's SystemD) for about a month now. I'm on the testing branch which is like the bleeding edge for Debian and I've had nothing but stability and great performance. 90% of my Steam library works out of the box, games like Watch Dogs: Legion work out of the box with no configuration at all. Many development tools are readily available in the repositories completely for free. My advice, if you plan on switching to Linux and want a really smooth experience for gaming is get an AMD/ATI Radeon GPU like a 6500XT or anything above for a seamless experience, but Nvidia works too if you follow the Wiki guides or use your distros built-in driver installer.
All-in-all, it feels great using Linux as I have software freedom and complete control over every aspect of my computers hardware and data. I've also noticed a significant reduction in targeted advertising online which means I'm not being tracked like Windows 10/11 does.

Great overview speaking about rolling release could add some perspective to the stability easy maintenance argument in favor of Linux install once run for ever with the latest updates. Quite addictive for the hardcore geek (ArchLinux) or the easy going guy ( Manjaro Linux). I started experimenting with Linux in mid late 90's with both Slackware and redHat distros and definitively switched to Linux in 1999 thanks to Mandrake Linux over the time I used Ubuntu, Debian, Manjaro on my desktop and debian or centos/redhat on servers. I liked every moment of this journey out of Microsoft's jail.

I just discovered this channel and I should say I'm amazed by the proper research and awesome presentation.
I would love if you also mentioned Fedora :D
To be honest, while Ubuntu is the most popular as of now, recently they're (again) pushing a lot of user-unfriendly technologies that they made instead of community made, well established and generally better ones, worsen the experience and performance while ignoring the criticisms. Canonical is on the server ecosystem and getting more money side for some years, and left out the user-first approach that they got popular for. Linux mint on the other side is away from these things and refocus on the user while getting all the popularity advantages of it.
Fedora on the other hand is generally known for being the innovative edge of Linux, pushing new and better technologies to the ecosystem while also being pretty popular in terms of support.
    Great video, thanks!

However, I think if you are gaming, definitely try out Pop!_OS first and see what you think. I have had all sorts of problems getting drivers working "perfectly" with my RTX 2060 Super on Mint, Nobara, and Fedora 36. However, the included drivers for Nvidia in Pop!_OS worked fine right out of the box. (I just like the vanilla Gnome desktop of Fedora more than the Cosmic desktop of Pop!)

If you're an advanced Windows or Mac OS user (meaning that you're extremely comfortable using command lines on your built in terminal app) then the Linux World becomes more managable for you - because from that angle, there's really only 5 versions of dominating linux original Distros and all the rest of them are just tweaked customized spin-off versions of them (with different desk top environments). From the "terminal side" there are mostly 5 different dominant Package Managers (from those original 5 distros) which have their own unique ways of entering the same set of commands. "Package Manager" is the generic term for the app that's also built into Windows and Mac - when you hit "Update." In those systems, it has no name. In Linux World this app has a kind of brand name all its own. Ex. Apt, Pacman, Zypper, Yum, Dnf, Portage. You talk with it on the terminal in code but in essence it amounts to - "Hey Pacman, do this for me", "Hey Zypper, do that for me."

Organisations with critical data such as military services also prefer Linux over Windows, because they can check every line of code and verify it's safe to use. But not only server but also clients have installed Linux, but mainly only for booting Windows Client in a completely encrypted environment for safety reasons. The hypervisor is built around security. Network, storage and maybe even RAM, not 100 % sure about RAM, are fully encrypted on hypervisor level and you always can do rollbacks if you need, since it is a virtual machine. USB ports are blocked for all hardware except the devices support by the organization itself like mouse, keyboard etc. They all probably have custom firmware with drivers signed by the organization.
Because not much people use Windows-PCs at home anymore (smart phones seem to replaced them entirely for a good majority, many organisations think about switching to Linux on client hardware in the next 10 years. Also saves licencing fees.
