And it's a shame after being taught the official language of our country if we can't master a language taught at ALL levels of school.

There's no pride in NOT knowing even 1 more language than your mother tongue. Hindi speakers make ZERO effort. Rest - MOST Indians know 4-5 languages on an average & EVEN learn foreign lang Hindi sometimes.
It's a different thing if you never went to school. But if you did, even in vernacular medium (local language schools) in India, English is a compulsory subject.
Yes, translators are available. And no need to feel inferior. But when MOST of India ITSELF doesn't speak Hindi & they sacrificed their OWN classical, heritage languages & chose English as to represent them, that's the least you can do!
You won't learn Odia, Tamil, Telugu etc, nor would you learn English while you DEMAND others learn YOUR lang. This superiority complex of such a young lang infront of such ancient shashtriya bhasha is the problem.
