  • I take a look at an alcohol burner made from a 1oz square candy tin and carbon felt. Also how I combine it with a small solid fuel stove.

Impressive for what it is. I still need one of your large cosmetic tin burners 😂

    👍👍👍 . Nice 😊.
Don't be too concerned with the tightness of the Esbit Stove. They loosen up with use .. mine has (after 26 years, pretty much so 😏). It was my original Military Issue in 1968 at the start of my National Service. I like it so much that I went and bought another last year (allows me to dedicate one specifically to one of my cook kits).
Yep, Alcohol and Gel Burners can come in all shapes and sizes .. limited only by the scope of one's imagination. I even use Whiskey Bottle / Similar Screw-On Caps filled with Ceramic / Glass Wool as little 'Simmer Burners' when a more gentle heat is required. They burn for a respectable length of time .. especially the deep ones. Notwithstanding the smaller fuel capacity, the smaller surface area extends burn time.
What one overlooks is the Esbit Folding Stove. It's been going since the 1930's and is an extremely versatile little Unit in that it can be used with a variety of fuel-types.
My favourites are Alcohol Liquid and Gel Fuels and then the original Esbit Solid Fuel Tablets (of which I store in the Stove for 'just in case'). Here in Switzerland, the Alcohol-Based Fuels are far easier to source and cheaper than the Solid Tablets. Even Compressed Charcoal Briquettes work pretty well. Start them with some Alcohol Fuel and you're good to go!
Thanks for sharing .. take care ..

Just curious but I'm wondering if the burn time would improve slightly if you placed metal sides on the stove, enclosing the heat a bit more?

It does contain the heat more effectively .. and as a windscreen too..
I cut the bottom of an oval Aluminium Pilchards Tin for sections to fit. One side closed completely and the other, just the top section. Two sets .. to accommodate the stove openings .. full and half.

Good point, it got me thinking and I tried it, both the same. 🙂
      I did make a video:

@@planetsideagent 👍 Yep, your test showed that there was practically no difference between the half and fully-open positions .. interesting.
The original reason that I made the side panel and accompanying opposite support for my Esbit was that after 50+ years it has loosened up considerably and they help keep the stove open (a just in case precaution) in the 'half-cock' position when using heavier pot loads.
An accompanying bonus was that this 'seemed' to work as a Windscreen too, so I made a set for the fully-open position and subsequently for the 'new kid on the block' Esbit that I got last year.
