  • Beat the UK ban on Esbit fuel. This FireDragon BCB Stove conversion allows it to carry 40ml of alcohol which is enough to boil a liter of water. More than enough for a day hike or weekend away.
The burner is made from a 35mm diameter travel deodorant or similar aluminium bottle. Caution when cutting into the bottle as there is always some left inside however much you try to empty it. Best to start cutting into it outside. A junior hacksaw is your friend. A simple strip of aluminium drinks can with groves formed with a steel rule or other implement. These groves work the same way as a Trangia by trapping alcohol which creates jets of alcohol vapor. The carbon felt prevents the alcohol from spitting boiling alcohol which can result in an unwanted fireball.
The FireDragon BCB stove itself remains untouched and can be used with gel tablets as originally intended.

I first made it as a backup stove but use it exclusively for day and weekend hikes.

I converted the BCB stove into a burner stand by folding the inter wings down as flat as I could get them. Insert an Evernew Titanium burner with cross bars, BCB wind screen, fold down the BCB stove legs, and G2G. Works great for canteen cups

Sounds a bit like what 'infoshed explore' did

The BCB is a good basis for experimenting.
Thanks for the comment and I'm sure it will prove of use.

Out of curiosity, would this work by just lining the tray with carbon felt?

You would need to seal the gaps in the tray as it's just folded. A better approach in MHO would be to form a tray out of heavy guage aluminium foil then fill it with carbon felt.
Doing this would work but the stove would be "hot." Too hot for my needs but ok for boiling large quantities of water, half litre, quite quickly. I'm quite happy with smaller stoves that have low heat output but that's just me. Others may have priorities.

By the by, who makes the kettle?

If you search eBay with "300ML Folding Camping Kettle Outdoor Kettle Coffee Pot Portable Lightweight" you will find it or one like it. Costs about £10. I'd post a link but TH-cam usually deletes comments with links.
I wrapped the handle with parcel string which worked well however the spout suffers from the same problem as every other hiking kettle. The spout projects into the main body forming a ridge that traps some of the water which makes completely emptying it awkward to say the least. Best part is that it fits inside the small trangia mess tin.
      Thanks for watching.

That's pretty handy,I was thinking of modifying my bcb stove by putting stove rope in the square resovoir that the gel goes in,but maybe it would be too much fuel wasting and could be dangerous, your idea seems very solid 👍

The only reason why this thing needs to be converted is because it doesn't work properly with its own fuel.😂

    • @EpicureanHikers
      @EpicureanHikers  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

It's too hot with the gel blocks. Ok for it's intended purpose of boiling water for a brew or heating a retort pouch. Meths is cheaper than the intended gel fuel

@@EpicureanHikers It's ridiculously inefficient and when I tried using it with BCB fire dragon I actually nearly burnt my hands off trying to pick my own BCB mug up off it. 😅 yeah its got some issues 🤔 its never good if you have to mod it to use it🤣👍
