    How do you guys like this tips video compared to the last one? Do you like the casual mid-ride chat or the studio vids?
    Big thanks to everyone who took part in the discussion on the last one - would love to hear more from you guys on this one!

      Yes, I much prefer the in-ride chat set-up, D&B. Re There's a couple of things I should mention.....1) re Ocky straps, there's no such thing as good, Aussie-made ones nowadays, only cheap rubbish. At least, that seems to be the case where I live. 2) re that 'location' thing you mentioned, Dave, most of the Garmin bike computers with GPS have an 'incident protection' item listed in the settings. To use it, though, it has to be linked to the Garmin Connect mobile App. My Garmin 520 has it.

      Good to know Brian. General consensus seems to be for the in-ride chat - which I like! Surprising, but nice to know!
      I actually have an Ocky strap that I bought in WA and still have. It's looking a bit faded, but it's still going strong. It isn't made the same as the usual brightly coloured ones you see - it almost looks like it's been woven or something. It's pretty old fashioned looking but it's great!
      I think the Garmin thing MIGHT require mobile connection to work properly. Still useful! But I don't think it would help you out in the wilderness and out of reception. I might be wrong though!

      I was thinking as I watched it that it was really well done, Dave! Good advice as well. The perishing due to UV is full on in Oz. Completely agree about the road trains. Also if you're on a dirt road when they go past (as I was for example in Western QLD) you want to be well off the road when they go past or you'll be covered with the dust!!. Ah now there's a topic for you, sun, dust, and insects!!

    Nice to see how different it is in other countries. Practically non of these tips were important in Finland, where I mostly cycle. Of course when I'm going mountain biking, I tell someone where I will go and how long I will stay, if I get such injury that I can't use phone. Midday is also the best time for cycling because it's most likely warmer then. In Lapland, where I live, you can find water from the creeks and springs and you can mostly drink it without filtering. In more populated parts of country you can fill your bottles at least on every 30 min with tap water.

      Yes, I'm from the UK and a lot of this isn't too relevant there either!
      I would imagine the water is much safer in Finland. Australia has a lot of nasty bacteria due to the heat and, in the north, humidity. Where I live in Far North Queensland, some of the water isn't even treatable because it is tainted from mining in the area. Much has high levels of Arsenic. It's pretty sad.

    I gave up on Okky straps a long time ago, my go to straps for holding panniers steady and stuff on racks are RokStraps. They come in all sizes , are two piece, And have been on all my tours since 2010. Worth every penny, if you want to get a product that does the same as Voile, Bunnings sell Grunt Versa straps (from $4.50 a pair to $7.50 for the longest.). Original use of the Voile was for cross country skiers, my two lasted around 15-20 years before they died. Like this type of format.

    • @VeloObscura
      @VeloObscura  ปีที่แล้ว

      RokStraps are great! Originally for moto guys, right?
      I nearly mentioned the Bunnings ones, but wasn't sure if they were UV resistant or not. I had a similar strap fail due to UV damage, so I'm very reluctant to recommend anything other than Voile straps...
      Cheers for commenting, Paul!

    yep you are right on the bungie straps i been through a few i use the sea to summit version of the voile straps got them for bargain at wildearth still needed to use bungie ones for when i carried extra bottles of water then usual good thing find so many free ones in good nick on road 🤣🤣 yep great tip on the riding times to avoid the hottest times of day. i would leave 4:30 just before sunrise and finish 9:30-10am when its already reaching mid 30s in the Pilbara wouldn't ride again after defiantly depends if find shelter or not most of time no trees or rocks at all :D if super low on water staying at denigrated rest area or pull in bay around australia guarantees a grey nomad or truckie stopping who offer some if needed. great tips there for everyone :D

      Yep, great tips there too.
      It's great that truckies and grey nomads will always help you out, but I don't think you should ever rely on that as it's never guaranteed! Much better to be completely self-supported out there I think..... Wouldn't say no to a refill from a kind stranger though! 😉

    If your mobile phone is not with Telstra, get a pre-paid sim card before you head off. Telstra is the only service across the Nullarbor and even then, only at the big roadhouses. Unless of course, being completely out of touch is what you're after.
    Overnight riding is usually safer. You can see the cars / trucks coming from a long way off and you're more visible with multiple lights and reflective tape on bike & clothing.
    Surprised you managed to find a day without rain. Been a serious wet season this year. 🍕🚴🍍

    • @andrewford80
      @andrewford80 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      And go with boost. Cheaper than telstra and gets full access to the network.

    • @VeloObscura
      @VeloObscura  ปีที่แล้ว

      Good tip on the pre-paid!
      We were with Telstra and the Nullarbor wasn't an issue whatsoever. The most we were without service for was one day. I think every roadhouse has a Telstra tower now.
      Yeah, it's been a rainy one! We managed to get a few nice days last week, but it's back to the misery now!

      The Telstra advice is something I've passed onto others. Plenty of passing traffic if you really need help.
      More trips up the Gillies to the Tablelands and a few up the Palmerston planned for later this year. Want to do a 2-day trip at least once a month to keep fitness levels up. 🍕🚴🍍

      Yeah, not surprised! I'd love an indoor setup, but can't really justify it at the moment.

    Hi mate I really find your videos very useful cause I’m interested in bike touring myself in Australia. My question is this: When camping would I ever need to be aware of dingoes?

    • @VeloObscura
      @VeloObscura  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hey, thanks man! Glad you find em useful!
      You won't ever need to worry about dingoes as long as you don't mess with them. Don't try to feed them or anything like that - although you probably won't get the chance anyway, because they tend to keep to themselves!
      Cheers!
