Cannas: How to Plant Canna Rhizomes

- One of my all time favorite container plants is the Canna! There's some really great varieties out there that bring wonderfully lush foliage to your container garden for months and months. Generally the plants are started with Rhizomes. And if you have never grown a plant from a rhizome, I am here to help!
I can only echo the same sentiment, we like "straight to the point" videos because life is short and there are cannas to plant.
This person is great--gets right to the topic and explains it well. No info commercials, no fluff, no "beating around the bush"---wish all videos were like this one.

Can you do a show about growing ginger from a ginger root bought at the grocery store? Ginger is a rhizome, right? Love your enthusiasm. Lots of good info.

as long as its not like four inches below the soil then it should be fine!

hahah its ok, that is a resilient plant! for the Pilea peperomioides they typically will do best in a southern or western facing window and you can wait until the soil dries out before watering. it'll grow back, so dont you worry!

if you planted them from rhizomes you dont want to let it 100% dry out but not stay soppy wet either. its really dependent on the warmth of your climate at the time
@@plantvibrations thank you so much. I have them indoors on my windowsill so they are in a central heated house, and then I’ll put them outside about mid May once chance of last frost has passed. I keep sticking my finger into soil and it’s not dry but I haven’t watered since I planted on Sunday.

Great video...I just got a Tropicana Cana bulb with roots at the bottom..an new eye on the right side. Do you still plant it on it's side?
they're pretty resilient no matter which way you plant it. maybe if you plant it at an angle so the roots are in the soil and the eye is going upwards, that would be best. you just dont want parts of it planted too deeply bc it could rot. which is why side ways is generally best
i dug up my cannas last fall before frost and put them in a peat moss box after drying them out. No rot that I can see. Can I just plant them in containers now and then transplant in the ground once last risk of frost is gone? (New England 5a). I plan on leaving them outside during the day and bring in the garage if there's risk of frost at night.
How often do you water them?
Yes you can definitely do that. Bringing them inside when nights are below 50. Water upon planting and whenever you feel the top of the soil to be dry
@@plantvibrations Oh woops, last night was 45 and left them outside. Hopefully didn't damage them. Does it need to be above 50? Thought I read as long as there's no frost risk (32F).
@@mapex311 freshly planted rhizomes in wet soil will be more sensitive that fully rooted plants, particularly ones being grown in ground.

@@plantvibrations I have the rhizomes planted in pots in the garage for the past 2 weeks. It's been pretty crappy here - around 50-60 max during day and 40's at night; a lot of raining dreary days. Still stays at least 50 in the garage though. On the nice days with sun I just wheel the wheelbarrow full of pots out. Supposed to be 70's next week.
Should I be watering them? Will it take a long time for them to grow with the cooler weather and low light in the garage? Don't want them to start rotting.

I got ur canna and they are gorgeous I planted them in containers. I’ve been watching videos that say I should dig them up but to wait till first frost is this correct? I’m in Pa zone 7

Hi Cathy, great question. since you are zone 7, after the first frost the foliage will brown and that is your signal to cut them back to the ground. but bc your winter won't be too cold in zone 7, you can lay a three inch mulching on top rather than digging them out if you prefer. and then in spring push the mulch to the side. hope that helps.

@@cathyjones3618 ive give it another month so you can keep enjoying it a bit longer. then when you are ready cut it back and pack the rhizome in a bag full of soil to keep it moist in transit

Dev, I don't really have access to virus resistant cannas, if the virus attacks, can my cannas develop immunity on their own?
oooh thats a tough one, its too hard to say for sure but worth experimenting
Can I plant them in the Fall? Or wait for spring? I’m in zone 7 and just got some rizhomes
tough call. i would plant them now bc they won't be viable if you store them till spring. plant them asap and they should sprout soon then give them a decent layer of mulch in mid november
What's a good pairing with cannas?
I love to pair them with Agapanthus or Tropical Hibiscus

@@Orodski you planted it shallowly and making sure it gets some moisture? give it a couple more weeks and if you dont see anything dig into the soil to see what's going on
Would this work with strelitzia rhizomes??
yes, it should be quite similar! if you are dividing a strelitzia, just plant the newly separated clumps/rhizomes at the depth they had been previously growing and they will do well!
