How to Propagate Canna Lily 3 Ways by Separating Offshoots, Rhizome Division, and Germinating Seeds

- In this video, I show how I propagate the Canna Lily plants in my garden to create a lush tropical garden. Canna Lilies are easy to propagate and I use three different methods to propagate them. I separate the offshoots, dig up the plant and divide the rhizome and collect the seeds and germinate them to grow even more Canna Lily plants.
During the growing season, Canna Lilies grow many offshoots. I look for offshoots and use a Root Slayer shovel to separate the offshoot from the mother plant. I also dig up the whole plant and then divide the rhizome by hand or with a knife. Each part of the rhizome will grow another plant. The last method is to collect the seeds after they have turned brown and then scarify them with a rotary tool and soak them in water. They germinate witha a week and the plant can grow into a flower in several months.

I live in new jersey and the winters are cold, can you leave them in the ground all year? I have many colors but take them inside for winter?
I think it’s too cold for you to leave them outside in the winter. Do you know what climate zone you live in?
I love the video. I wonder if the seed would germinate in the tropic? Are these plants perennial?
In the tropics they probably are perennial, but for me it gets too cold in the winter, so they grow as annuals. The seeds should germinate naturally, but scarifying the seeds speeds up the process.

Where I live there are no seeds in the pods. They are all empty.
Do your cannas have variegated leaves? The Stuttgart, Cleopatra, Pretoria, and Tropicanna don’t produce seeds. Most of the varieties with plain green leaves have seeds.
How long can you keep the Canna Lily seeds before planting them? I mean the brown seeds. I'm keeping mine in a dry envelope right now.
I have successfully germinated seeds that were over a year old.

I love your garden . My canna leaves were eaten by leaf rollers.
Thank you, I haven’t seen leaf rollers in my garden, but snails eat holes in my canna leaves as they hide in unfurling leaves.

Hi there. Awesome video. I found a canna in my garden. Not sure how it got there. I'm trying to identify the cultivar. It has red flowers with plain green leaves and produces seed. Maybe you can help me ID it?

Hey I have it's rhizomes I planted them but not working..also I have cuttings can we grow this from cuttings?
When did you plant them? They won’t grow until spring. The cuttings have to include part of the rhizome to grow.
