    A very nice video again!!! From my personal experience here in North Greece zone 8a I NEVER dig out my cannas from the ground! I just leave them either in pots or in the ground and each year they are coming back stronger and better! Moreover, the ones that I have them on the ground they almost get only rainfall during the summer and they cope well with the extreme temperatures and the drought climate! In conclusion they are hard to kill plants and need no care , and especially you don't need to dig them out from the ground!

      We do here in U K, a few years back it was minus14 so freezing! If I lived in Greece,( beautiful ) I would also leave in ground!

    For the method of digging up the Rhizomes and putting in trogs do you need to water the Rhizomes during winter to stop the plant from drying up completely ? Also I was told not to store the Rhizomes in plastic containers, rather use cardboard boxes ?
    Many thanks for excellent video please keep them coming

    I dont have a green house and house/dining room is already packed with stuff that needs to overwinter inside. I have to leave them the round too wet and cold so lost them and also tried in the garage where they dried out.
    Thinking of trying garage again with slightly damp compost but am concerned that they will mould. Any thoughts?

    Hi Chris great vedio last year was my first year overwintering cannas in my garden I did everything you said all my cannas have came back apart from one. Should I leave it in the ground and wait or dig it up to check if there's any growth like you dug your up? Thanks Chris.

    Im in zone 7 in new york and it take so much time to dig the 100s of rhizomes out every fall. What do you think about rubber mulch wonder if that would work. thinking planting my canna lily rhizomes in mix of 70% rubber mulch and 30% soil in the ground. maybe over winter it will help them getting too wet and rotting as the rubber wont hold water. Also the rubber i think in the soil will help insulate the rhizomes.

    Could you mulch & protect cannas overwinter with their own foliage, or would you advise composting it?

    • @YorkshireKRIS
      @YorkshireKRIS  3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Their foliage goes wet and slimy so doesn't give much protection really

    Thank you for the vid, I had my canna's in pots and overwintered them in the greenhouse , I dug some in the ground and some left in smaller pots, a lot of the leaves have gone brown, what should I do please?

    • @YorkshireKRIS
      @YorkshireKRIS  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      New shoots should start forming now. Take a look at the base. Be careful though as the shoots are fragile when very small

  • @gillianbc
    @gillianbc ปีที่แล้ว

    When mulching, do you put netting or tarpaulin on top of the mulch? I have 6 new alstromerias and I've heard I should mulch them over Winter until they've matured.

    • @YorkshireKRIS
      @YorkshireKRIS  ปีที่แล้ว

      Nothing over the top of the mulch. It generally stays in place

    Kris, do the small potted plants need to be stored in light or dark?

    • @YorkshireKRIS
      @YorkshireKRIS  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The aim is to keep them dormant so darkness helps. Certainly out of full sun.

    It's my first year for growing Cannas, mine are in a big pot I've not disturbed them at all, just popped the whole pot into the unheated poly tunnel. Do I need to do anything else? Thinking it will be too cold in the mid of winter.

    • @YorkshireKRIS
      @YorkshireKRIS  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      They'll be for now, and if it's a mild winter they'll be fine. If we get a very cold spell then yes they'll need bringing inside or at least against a house wall.

  • @murph6510
    @murph6510 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have seen a few videos that recommend digging up and cleaning and drying the roots and then wrapping them up until time for replanting. Is this method also possible or not as reliable?

    • @YorkshireKRIS
      @YorkshireKRIS  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You want to avoid the rhizomes completely drying out or its harder to start back into growth.

    Hello! Once the cannas are in pots, do you water them over the winter? And do you recommend splitting them before putting them in pots, or in the spring? I lost 2 out of my 3 cannas last winter, watering once a month (as recommended by Hart Canna) and then splitting around March.

    • @YorkshireKRIS
      @YorkshireKRIS  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You probably won't need to water them over winter if they are dormant. Don't let the compost get powder dry, just barely moist is what you're aiming for. Better to divide in spring
