  • An electric-powered 28,000lb hybrid bluewater sailing cruising boat? You betcha! It's a 1978 Formosa 41 sailboat for sale (coming from a popular William Garden design) that was also built as a Sea Tiger Sailboat, Yankee Clipper sailboat, CT41 & a Formosa Sea Wolf (there's a lot to figure out there!). It turns out to be a great system even for a sailboat this big (and heavy)

    🇨🇦 my parents took us 4 kids from Toronto, Ontario, Canada to the Bahamas on an ATLANTIC CLIPPER 41 ❤ which he bought in 1977 brand new. We picked it up off the container ship in a shipyard in New Jersey in July 1977 and brought it north on the Hudson River thru the Erie Barge Canal to Oswego onto Toronto to be showcased at the Toronto-In-The-Water Boat Show held annually in mid September. We departed for our year cruise just before the Erie Barge Canal closed for its' season and went as far as Georgetown, Bahamas before we turned north and headed back to living on land. My Dad instilled the love of sailing in all us kids - I turned 16 in that year (I'm 61 now) and have very fond memories of the year we lived on this boat (her name was - the LONG REACH) ❤ !!

      🇨🇦 our home yacht club was Frenchman's Bay YC in Pickering and our sister club is Wilson YC directly south - annual long distance regatta to them on Labour Day weekend ... if you were near there during the 70's, we were sailing as a family on an Alberg 30 then.

    When I read Formosa 41 I got excited again. I know it's only a pipe dream but I love looking at boats that I could actually live on long term. I absolutely adore the carved wooden door panels, it's such a focal point to show off the master carpentry that went into this classic yacht. Loved the electric motor and generator idea, I'm sold on that too. Thank you Captain Q (and Ran-day) for another great video showing us the future of propulsion on a classy fiberglass boat with some real heavy duty woodwork that looks like she would go anywhere you have the time and money to take her. Wishing I were 10 years younger and a whole lot richer so I could make myself a part of her history. Looking forward to the next one and to another Ran-day adventure !

    I have owned the same boat in France for 30 years now. But mine was made by TaChiao Brothers in Taywan in 1975.
    It took several years to eliminate all water ingress on the deck and coachroof, but now it's completely watertight.
    I also installed a large diesel engine.
    It's a boat full of charm and very safe, but not very fast in light winds. Lots of strong gales crossed without incident.

    The Formosa 41 is and always has been the never ending project boat. At least with the new electric motor and diesel generator you have two less projects. The teak is never ending as is the rot associated with the glass over ply construction of the cabin and under deck. However the hull is bulletproof glass. Pretty traditional look with that bowsprit but is it worth the extra dock fees? Always the question with these.
    Great look at this one..
    Looking forward to next weeks new video. Cheers!

      Yeah, we have an Island Trader 37, which has is no doubt related to this one, both in terms of design, designer and construction. I'd say our boat is a "labor of love", but the emphasis is on "labor" lol. Our boat had the teak deck removed and is now fiberglass. The wooden masts have been replaced with aluminum. The poor boat leaks like a sieve, but wow have we had fun the last 10 years day sailing her. Absolutely no regrets, but it might be the last late 70s' early 80's Taiwanese boat we buy ;-).
      Oh, and Randay, you'll never have to worry about putting the rail in the water LOL! If that happens, you've lost the keel and it's a code-brown moment.

    this for me might be one of the best boats you have ever shown. Its simple, beautiful, Its VERY livable! its a great place to eat, sleep, read books, enjoy the sun. Relax. It has a place for a captain to be alone. away from everything. I Only spot simple problems, the use of random screws, places where I can see latches have fallen out. Easily fixed wood work and paint work. scrubbing and cleaning. the engine and power is PERFECT! I saw one guy have generator problems in the middle of now where and he bought two portable generators to charge his batteries and he never used the other one. even kept the generator on deck protected from the elements. Electronics are so BASIC in what they are composed of. No strange valve or adapter that has to be a certain size, weight or age. when you go to replace an electronic item is not a specialty item that only a few people need. its a part that is used in one million things all around the world. simple thinks like "dont like that little sink? yank it out! put in a deep two container one" this might be my "perfect boat" well done guys! (oh and Randy, your fuel and water tanks: when I saw those new bladder tanks I was like "OOOH YOU NEED THESE!" no more metal tanks full of gunk. smaller sets of tanks that fill up, or you empty then and two people can lug them off the ship! amazing!}

    • @YachtHunters

      yes, love those bladder tanks... although removing mine might require dynamite (as Walter Schulz told me off-camera).. One other viewer spotted that we need a stove/oven to prep to go offshore... so make sure to bring that along to install!! cheers, earl!

Man I love this boat! I would make it a live aboard. Get an amazing wood worker to fit out the most amazing living space and bedroom. Did you ever read "cannery row"? I think I am like henry the painter. he lived on a boat that was on the stand in a forest. was always working on it. someone asked why he never put it in the water and Doc said "well he loves boats, hates the water"

    Guarantee the deck core is rotten under the teak deck. You may not notice as the fiberglass is pretty thick and with the teak on top, itll still feel pretty firm under foot. Probably some in the cabin sides too. The main mast chainplates should also be replaced if they haven't yet. Unfortunately they are fiberglassed over and when water leaks in through, there is nowhere for it to go. So it sits and corrodes the stainless steel and rots the wood they attach to. Mast steps should also be inspected. They are good boats, but they have a lot of faults too. But I love mine... I've got a few seconds video on my channel of me sticking my finger through the wood the chainplates attach to on mine when I cut the glass off.

      @@YachtHunters I hope I am wrong too! That electric drive looked pretty sweet. I just know from my own Formosa and most of the other's in the Formosa groups I'm in having these same issues. But, as they are common, there is lots of knowledge in those groups to help someone along with those repairs. Swan diving off that bowsprit into tropical waters would make time spent doing repairs worth it.

    I had a pontoon boat for many years. The original table was missing and the mounting bracket was cracked. I bought a 48" × 30" folding utility table that was adjustable to height. It worked for a dining table at proper height, it worked as a cocktail table when moved to the fore deck. It folded up and was stored out of the way when not in use. Best boat table I ever owned!

    I'll be dreaming of riding out a storm in the Milaca Straits on Serenade tonight...
    This boat has the most perfect hull design I've ever seen. I'm in love. Why are so many people afraid of the maintenance of teak? Just have to get it all refinished then sand and treat 1/4 of it every season thereafter, and don't ever let it get that dry, that's it! This boat would look so gorgeous with all that teak sanded smooth, oiled and shiny, and the trim pieces around the cabin top sanded and stained with white gray stain so they blend in a little better. The wooden spars having been painted to cover repairs, that's not a show stopper, but it is a little scary. I wonder if the owner took pictures of the repairs before paint? Last thing, the drone shot of her under way was incredible, she was really moving and there was barely any wind...seemed like maybe 5 kn? Definitely include more drone shots in future videos please 🙏 Or make a video of all the drone shots you have so far, just back to back, drone shots of sailboats are magic. Thank you Captain Q and Randy!

    Very nice boat! I have an electric motor in my boat and it's great! One issue with the ELCO motors: most of the other brands can do regeneration under sail (turn some of that propeller spinning under sail into electrons for your batteries), but ELCO does not. With a heavy boat like that, one wouldn't be generating a lot of electricity - probably enough to keep the instruments going - but it can make a difference. I get about 100W sailing at hull speed. An extra solar panel would make up the difference.

    • @YachtHunters
      @YachtHunters  ปีที่แล้ว

    • @somedayblue9197
      @somedayblue9197 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@YachtHunters I have an Electric Yacht motor in my boat. It was actually installed by the previous owner, but I've had the boat for over 4 years and am happy with it. One more note - ELCO markets their motors listing "HP equivalent" while others list the kW rating. The EP-70 is rated at 30kW continuous, and the largest motor Electric Yacht makes is 30kW. I think Oceanvolt may offer better regen than Electric Yacht, but they are also more expensive. Likewise with Torqueedo.

      You could motor out and the only noise would be prop wash..
      The elco suits the style but its a bit of a lump and really could do with a smaller sized regen hightorque motor with a variable pitch prop.... for batteries I would go with the Lithium Iron blade cells... now and add some solar or a FLIN sail .
      Though Na Sulpher and Al cell techs are all coming in this year and they can handle cold ...running flat and are very stable . ...plus theres a lot of room below decks on this boat.😊
      That genny will run any system direct and still be more efficient than running a direct diesel a lot of the time . Id soundproof its housing and mounts though as far as possible and scavenge back any heat as far as possible
      for hot water or heating.

    Pour hot toilet flange wax on the exposed terminals. It will easily survive a good dunking. I would treat all the high power terminals, regardless of how high they are. Check to make sure the material isn't conductive first.

    It needs a rack of lifepo4s. Smaller, lighter, dramatically more efficient as you can fully discharge and far longer lasting around 7k cycles if you discharge to 80% max. even then you should still over 80% capacity. The more KW the better. Solar, wind and aqua chargers to go with the generator. That's 20-30K right there and you haven't bought the really expensive stuff like sandpaper yet, lol. Capt.Q i have a question for you on a 1979 Etchells Pearson 46 i guess it is considered a racing boat but could that type of boat be good for blue water? It needs lots of work and just not sure because i don't know much about Etchells boats

    • @YachtHunters
      @YachtHunters  ปีที่แล้ว

      I can picture the 46 when she came out let me research her
      Btw
      “American sailor, builder and designer, mostly of small racing one design craft, best known as the designer of the Etchells 22. Originally from Trenton, N.J., he studied engineering and naval architecture at the University of Michigan.
      During the second world war he worked with the Navy on the west coast, and later at the design office of Sparkman & Stephens in New York.
      Ethchells boat building facility was located in Connecticut. His version of the STAR and LIGHTING class were, in their day, usually seen at the head of the fleet.”

    • @YachtHunters
      @YachtHunters  ปีที่แล้ว

      You have this info probably.
      Yes she was built for blue water.
      EP-46 Etchells Pearson
      built 1972 by Tillotson-Pearson Yachts
      Fiberglass hull and deck and carbon fiber backbone grid
      46' loa
      37' 6" lwl
      12' 10" beam
      7' 6" draft
      19,753 displacement
      10,400 ballast
      Five sails
      Main - excellent
      Genoa 150% very good
      Jib 120% good
      Spinnaker 1.5 oz good
      Spinnaker 0.75 oz good
      Winches - 9 total
      Barient 35 ST primaries (2)
      Lewmar 48 ST secondaries (2)
      Lewmar 48 ST cockpit reefing (1)
      Barient 26 deck (2)
      Barient 20 haylard (2)
      Engine Yenmar 55 hp diesel (mid 90's 1,000 hrs)
      Hull light grey Algrip (painted about 10 years but looks good)
      Cockpit cushions - very good
      Upholstery - fair/good
      AMASTAR should be considered an easy "Project Boat" with a bunch of little cosmetic tasks, nothing major. She is fully functional so you can alternate your weekends sailing and making her look pretty.
      Decks need painting
      All exterior teak needs to be stripped and varnished
      DC wiring and lights need some work
      Some interior painting
      Replace windows some day, they don't leak and not broken, just look bad
      Spinnaker pole needs repair
      New navigation lights need to be installed
      I bought this boat six years ago from Stanford University with the intention to outfit her as a very fast, short handed, world cruiser but my age (75) and health conditions have caught up with me and changed my plans. I am an experienced cruiser with more than 100,000 miles of blue water cruising with the dream to "go again" and some strong opinions as to the perfect boat to make a circumnavigation. I wanted a fast, strong boat with exceptional sailing characteristics that would also power well because it has been my experience that you spend 50% of your cruising under power.
      Her layout is conventional, kind of like a big 35 footer, with a large "V" birth forward followed by a head to port and hanging locker and sail bin to starboard. The main salon has settees to port and starboard with a drop leaf table mid-ship followed by a chart table and quarter birth to starboard with a full "U" shaped galley to port. The cockpit is exceptionally large with the Yanmar engine and Walter "V" drive below. The cockpit lockers provide easy access to the engine and other systems. As a side note. With her large cockpit AMASTAR would make an excellent commercial day sail boat and she was built in the USA.
      She is in Alameda, CA at Marina Village. I will be on board for the next five days getting her ready to sell. I think a fair price is about $22,000 which is way less than her engine, sails, winches and lead are worth. She is fully functional and ready to have fun if you don't mind the ugly decks.

    Dyneema lifeline. Sounds like paper safety glasses, or open toe work boots. Dyneema is awesome stuff and definitely has proper applications, but not for safety lines. It seems like some dyneema is better than others, it's inconsistent. Maybe there's counterfeit dyneema? I'm going to Google and check...
    Edit: found all kinds of stories about how to tell if it's dyneema and counterfeit climbing rope, so maybe that's the reason I've seen variation. One story was "Dyneema vs Chyneema" apparently a Chinese knock off of dyneema. Seems like it's important to know who you're buying it from. Anything valuable is being counterfeited these days, how sad.

    • @mboyer68
      @mboyer68 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@YachtHunters yes, definitely! The lines are like sewing thread! Real dyneema at 1/4" dia is 8600lbs tensile strength, crazy, but it's so little! And it breaks down quickly if it rubs on anything. I definitely wouldn't use it for lifelines, I'd go with the traditional braided, bare stainless steel. How about you Cap? If you see this, I want you to know how happy you make me when I watch your videos. Like you, I see wonder in things, and the beginning of each video where Randy does a compilation of many of the positive comments and praise you give the old girls. Great stuff, thank you:)
