    The cable management alone on that board, makes me want to throw my pedalboard on a bonfire.
    Okay, I take that back. I love my pedals like they were my own little battery-powered children.

    As a studio musician myself, I did the whole pedal board thing for a while but for me it made no sense to have all my pedals on the floor. Having to always be bent over tweaking them was killing my back, so I built myself a pedal trolley from an Ikea storage trolley thing, and bolted a big piece of wood to the top. Now I have a nice clear space for lots of pedals at once on the board that's really easy to swap pedals in and out, I have my power supply underneath the board with holes drilled into the top for cables so everything is nice and neat, and I have space in the compartments beneath to keep all the pedals I'm not currently using. And it has wheels so I can move it wherever I need to! :P Best thing I've ever built

    Big respect to people that can manage huge pedalboards on stage, I know damn well I would probably just use my amp for my tone if I ever start gigging.

    •  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      that's true. I don't wanna start a fight but that's all you need basically. with many pedals you got many things to go wrong and carry (literally). so having your own amp feels much more like home in tone aspects. pedals are cool, but not so much when you can't play without them. well, that's how I see it. the most important is to have fun with them and enjoy your sound

      @ some pedals are kinda necessary though. delay, reverb, fuzz and a boost or overdrive as well as a modulation pedal (univibe, phaser, flanger, chorus, tremelo, etc.) you don’t need all those modulation but generally you need at least 1 drive 1 verb 1 fuzz 1 delay and 1 modulation pedal. Not trying to tell you playing with just and amp is bad or impossible, just that a gigging musician needs quick access to a number of sounds and pedals are the best way to do it (generally speaking)

I am not a publisher nor do i play to an audience anymore, but i still need to change a pedal out every two weeks for some reason. I guess because i can and it is an active hobby. One needs to get to the pedals without tearing an entire board apart. I use some wood i bought and made one. It holds 10 pedal's, and the only direction i seem to dream is more.

    Both of these guys inspired me to do a major pedalboard build this year. Went with a Boss midi switcher foundation, but purposely made the top (dirt) row much more accessible so I could tinker a bit and tailor sounds for a project. In the process of building a DIY pedalboard, with a similar layout (and an extended section to the right for my massive volume pedal). For the top level, I'm going to use either some door hinges or a gas hinge, and some butterfly latches on the left and right sides to keep it closed. @RobertNolan 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The second board is Mason's attempt in creating that hinge. That is a vertex branded pedalboard. It's good, but if it could be brought down lower that would be better. You do run into those risks of "can I tweak this pedal?" Still, I think it's a very intelligent design and I like it.

    • @motomike71
      @motomike71 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@RobertNolan I wonder if the original board could be modified to include a hinge. That seems very inconvenient to have to remove all those pedals and cables and screws just to alter or swap out a bottom pedal. And then if you forget to activate the pedal before replacing everything you have to tear it down again! Maybe use torx or hex head screws so TSA can't mess with it.

    At times, I’ve put my modulation effects after the delay effects so the tails continue to modulate instead of being static in sound.

      It’s a great choice and everyone should try putting effects after their reverbs if they haven’t already. Even better, put your Reverb and effects in Parallel to save them specifically for the verb. I use a Keeley Dark Side and a OBNE Dark Star(dimed “Mix” can achieve 0% Dry, 100% wet) in parralel, separate from my tone and it’s seriously the best thing ever.

      @g.w.thurmond3691 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Dan couldn't build half the pedalboards out there from guys like Mason, Omilion, LASD, Goodwood. He's a "one size fits all" guy and if he doesn't have a product for it, he can't help you. These builders above all build all the stuff custom to the player. Rhett asked for what he wanted, he got it. It wasn't diverted into a prefab product like Dan does in his builds. Ever see Dan make a custom buffer I/O box to order with custom loops, etc. I haven't.

    A pretty and tight pedalboard is kind of like a model home. It's looks great, but it's not practical or "lived in". Changing one little thing can ruin the entire setup, or it's simple impossible to change anything without tearing the whole thing apart. I'm no pro. And I'm not in a working band anymore, but I'm fine with my sloppy pedal board so I can make quick changes and swap out pedals with out it being an afternoon project.

      You can try a good buffer. There is one in the interface on Rhett's board. Mesa boogie and empress make excellent buffers you can use on your board. I turn the buffers off on my ES8 and run an in/out buffer on larger pedalboards. I like the empress buffer because it is also a boost pedal and has a bias adjustment. Good luck!!

    Can someone explain to me how that Strymon Zuma can provide enough power to that HXFX? After some googling, I saw that the HXFX needed about 1.2A. And even 2A for the initial start.
    He is running it with one cable (500mA) from the Zuma. What am I missing here?

    • @VertexEffectsInc
      @VertexEffectsInc 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      There are two outputs wires in parallel to double the current going to the HXFX so it's getting a bit over 1A of power. I couldn't get it to draw over 900ish in my tests with the amount of processing that Rhett is using. I've also seen Cioks and Truetone validate the same that 1A is sufficient to power these. I've never had a problem on the rig's of mine that use this product nor others in the field for several years. We have a tutorial on our channel where you can see how to make your own current doubling cable with your existing DC power cables.

      I use a hx effects with some other pedals, too (drives in front of the hx effects). As far as I know the unit itself is buffered, maybe 0,03 % of tone-suck. But every "normal" other pedal effects the tone of an amp anyway. If it is good enough for Rhett...

    I create tracks all day... and used to use Pod Farm 2 to go thru hundreds of cool presets looking for inspiration for the next part I was tracking. There were so many cool fx chains (and song/artist styles) people made to download free, so there were hundreds of tones/sounds I would have never dialed in that I could use. Now I'd like to add something on my studio pedalboard ...to add that kind of variety of pre-made flavors I could use for my recordings. Does the HX Effect allow me to load up a bunch of presets like that... and do they still offer a forum to find & download for HX Effects? I use a Kemper for most amp tones now so that part is not needed. Thanks!

    I love your videos Rhett and advice but I have to ask, why ask a guy to build your board that is pretty straight forward? That would take a day at most to get right and tested. And why the Ultra Phonix when there are so many other Dumble-esque pedals out there around the same price or a little more (Gladio for example) that do a better job. I found the Ultra Phonix very limiting tone wise and frankly lacking in quality.

    its nice but the hx effects is a digital joke. you're only as good as your weakest link and you don't want that in your signal chain trust me. personally mine had noise all in the two effects loops sections, and the effects just sounded sub-par when compared to their analog counterparts.
