Agree. Had Series 2 and 3 XJ6 4.2, Series 3 V12. Facelift XJS, but never the XJ40. That's my aim now (rather late!) All my Jags were pure therapy to drive. Who needs a psychiatrist? Get a Jag and any problems melt away while you drive.
Starfleet0 me to. Most unreliable thing I ever bought. Still loved it though. Those cold winter days trying to repair the shocks and exhausts. Now I'm 29 and have the very last xj40 the xj6 gold and it's been very reliable.
Interesting despite all this testing the early '40s were underdeveloped took 2 or 3 years of customer testing to really get them right once sorted they were excellent. Problems with the electronics in later life but even these can be sorted today.
Jags are me favourite ! Reminds me of back when britain was great (and spelt with a capital 'B'). Although the electrics are a bit iffy on mine, and it needs new steering rack bushes.
I bought a early xj40 years and years ago. So unreliable lol. Then a 2 years back I bought a very last xj40. An xj6 gold and it's been a good car.so they must of improved near the end of the making the xj40.
Yeah they are pretty good but have their little glitches, the main mechanical components are how ever not super bad, eg the stuff that makes the car move. Yeah of course they gotten better from MY 1990 and upwards when they got a vitamin injection from the west somewhere, then the quality turned down again in the late 90s with the crappy S- and X-series. But it's successor, the X300, is actually one of the most all-in-all reliable saloon cars, in my opinion. Still got your two cars left? :)
I think that after the bloke and the bird finish their curry. He says "C'mon luv, fancy a shag?" In reply she says "that was a blindin' ruby!!! but I'd rather a Jag!" .......I know....It's not even funny!!
@BillysAutomotive my first was a gunmetal grey 1984 series 3 sovereign 4.2 then about a year later i got my beloved metallic BRG 1987 XJ40 sovereign 3.6 :D has a daimler interior, US headlights, an LSD and 17" performance wheels sorta looks like the one at 3:48 :)
Its a shame this video set is so horribly baised making it look like the xj40 just fell together and worked straight away.... (are your tyres causing any problems....nope... mine neither its remarkable)!!!.... I would have loved to see some of the engineering challenges. But i do love my jags :)
@2.49 he he...Jaguar engineers are, like, let's clean the rear lights....Mercedes engineers are, like, how can we prevent lights getting dirty in the first place....
It is not for nothing that this advertisement film puts so much emphasis on the durability tests. That does not say anything. The XJ40 was, certainly in the beginning, in spite of all the testing, not a very good quality car. The remark by the test driver in the video "are your tyres causing any problems....nope... mine neither its remarkable!" sums it up how the English engineers go for their testing. They are satisfied too soon. I also remember a story from SAAB that took over the Triumph motor in the sixties for the 99 model. The British were really amazed that SAAB wanted to test long runs at top speed. They also were amazed about the roads on which the SAAB 99 was tested (tracked vehicles only roads) and at some speed at that! It is not a question of knowledge. They have more than enough knowledge. It is culture. British are a bit laid back and easy people. "Are you feeling bad? Do take a cup of tea and a good nights sleep and all will be fine"- attitude. I love that, but do not buy their cars.
a really big thank you for uploading - I am a very proud XJ8 owner and I get nothing but sheer pleasure every time I see and get into my car.

I am just surprised by the no. of people who have viewed these three videos, is this Jag really that underrated?
Big thanks for uploading. Had a laugh . I loved mine though it was a pile
It's a very interesting footage. I like Jaguars in this body, especially with V12 :)
Every woman loves a Jaguar

v12s in this body are very very rare!
Any ideas on the music at the beginning?

Beautifully smooth, but too damned thirsty.
