    I have quite a few of these BPS knives & they are great. I like the Savage & the flat grind on it. They are an excellent value.

      Thank you very much.. I get quite a bit of flak from people saying that I “ummm” too much, but I like to format my videos like I’m just talking to someone. Sure their a little longer, but I like the personal feel it gives them.. cheers from Ontario 😊

    I just got the BPS Adventurer and for 1066 carbon they absolutely know how to heat treat because that knife performs like a way more expensive steel !

      As someone who is new to these new stainless super steels, I'm definitely in the boat where I would rather have a maker spend time learning how to properly heat treat and improve geometry than constantly change to the new buzzword steel and charge 10x the cost.. factory bps carbon edges have outlasted my high end cpm 154 and 3v knives I have had... don't know what kind of magic this company uses, but they have definitely got the most out of what most people would consider a "cheap' steel... this is the way 😀

      Yes buddy, the bps factory is right by where the invasion is happening in kieve. Thank for the condolences and congratulations. It is certainly a eventful time in my life. Super happy that people are watching my videos and enjoying them. Feel free to request knife reviews, or recommend blades to buy for reviews because I really like doing these

    You discuss blade geometry. I bought my wife a 75.00 knife. Convex 10 inch chefs knife. I tried it on large pumpkins. It swerved to a scary gunna gityrleg kinda thing. Always a right turn. Upon inspection I found that the bevel was twice as long on one side. SO! It does matter. Our antique carbon chefs knife took over without flying out the side. Flat grind. Aged by grandmama!

    • @tikkidaddy
      @tikkidaddy ปีที่แล้ว

      Your wife's $75 kitchen knife needs work by someone who knows how to properly balance the grind and sharpen and hone a convex blade. I would suggest a "spa treatment" by Mike Stewart and company at Bark River Knives in Escanaba MI😂

    Sorry for your loss brother. Thanks for your review. I just purchased the BPS HK5. It’s a pretty sweet knife. Now I just have to learn to maintain the high carbon steel.

    • @shawnpepin7890
      @shawnpepin7890  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you my friend, and don't worry too much about the high carbon... I still have 2 savages and one live in my kitchen with only a slight patina after a year or so... just don't leave acidic food on the blade (onions, lemons) and rinse and wipe clean after use and you'll be good to go... it will develop discoloration, (blues, greys, yellows) but I honestly love that about carbon steel. It tells a story. Don't worry about oiling it unless you plan on storing it for extended periods of time in a potentially humid area

    Thickness in leather is weird with the same knife. I got midweight for my HK4 but heavyweight for the Adventurer and just thought they were matching leather thickness to the size of the knife. I am happy with both sheaths and like that the lighter HK4 has a lighter sheath to match.

    • @shawnpepin7890
      @shawnpepin7890  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, it is totally acceptable given their price though, and my two hk4s both had very identical sheaths, the weird part was that the logo was different between the 2. One had theor standard bps carbon steel marking, and the other listed the 1066 carbon on it as well... I guess they may be experimenting with different carbon steels so they have to mark the 1066 now

    I'm very sorry to hear about your mom. I know that pain only to well. I've lost both my parents, as well as both my step parents, who were great people that I got along with and learned to love as well. I feel your pain.
    I thought about buying that model myself. I have the one that comes with a ferro rod, but I forget the model name. I think it's the Adventurer, but not positive. They make a very good knife for a very reasonable price. The steel isn't top of the line, but they seem to do a good heat treat on it, . So far, mine has held it's edge better than I expected from 1065. I may very well pick up this Savage model as well. I like the look of it.

      Yeah my friend, it's a great knife, and an awesome slicer. Thanks for the condolences, it's a tough pill to swallow as she was only 64, but that's just what life is. I feel lucky to have had the time I did with her given that she had a tough life with a lot of mental illness issues. The adventurer is a crazy good blade, and would rely on it in an emergency, but if you do bite the bullet on the savage, I doubt you'll be disappointed

      Thanks man, you gotta take the bad with the good, and life is full of surprises. My knife collection has almost tripled since I made this bps series and will be making a new one pretty soon including my 30 or so custom knives I’ve been making. Have my first show this weekend where my customs will finally be up for sale, and after that all the ones that don’t sell will be available to buy. I’m finding quite a bit of joy in creating and perfecting my designs than reviewing other people work, but will always give bps a video when I get a new one… I admire that guys workflow and humble pricing and he needs all the exposure he can get…. I’m glad dbk finally reviewed one of their blades because that probably gave bps more sales than 100 of my videos could do

    Thank you for your in-depth review! I've been looking for a knife for camp cooking and this one fits the bill. The only thing I was worried about is the down-turned handle and you addressed that too. I'd like to be able to mince and chop on a board and it might get in the way. Do you think removing the hook on the butt of the handle, in addition to filing down the choil that you show here, would be a worthwhile mod in an effort to make it more of a kitchen knife?

    • @shawnpepin7890
      @shawnpepin7890  ปีที่แล้ว

      For sure!! I have 2 savages and one lives exclusively in my kitchen… the carbon steel hasn’t been a problem at all, i fact I absolutely the bluish/ grey patina that has formed over time.. as for as the handle mods, I’ve thought of doing the exact thing you were thinking of, but have yet to bite the bullet because i would probably need to go all out and do a rehandle, but can’t bring myself to ditch the bog oak scales… that bog oak is an incredible handle material… I get it very wet regularly and haven’t had any warping or cracking. It’s like naturally stabilized wood

    I'm probably gonna get the savage for its style of grind, if it's crooked I'm gonna keep it anyway. Just too cool for the price considering the unique handle wood and having a carbon steel blade, It's currently $38.95 at Amazon as of today 9/23/22 as I type this comment. Liberta Ukraine 🇺🇦

      That's a great deal.. I think i paid around 90-100 canadian for my 2 (plus like 20 shipping from ebay, as they were not available on Amazon at that time) check out the hk4 or the hk6. Both flat grinds, but a little thicker and more robust than the savage. Will have a review of them soon as I got them a few weeks ago. I've just been to busy getting my custom knives ready for the holiday season to make it

    • @strangelyfamiliar1729
      @strangelyfamiliar1729 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you haven't ordered your knife yet I suggest doing so directly from BPS. It will take a bit longer, approx' 1 month, but the quality may be better. I've read a lot of reviews on amazon and some complain of the carbon blades coming out of the box rusty, which isn't a huge deal as it's likely surface rust and cleans off, but there's zero reviews of such on their site direct. I may be wrong but I assume the final inspection is better before being shipped out.
      I do know the prices are cheaper on their site. The mark-up for some of the knives on amazon is ridiculous.
