Thankyou so much for this video, and your thoughts on this amazing book, it really does make you think of your own life and experiences, I personally think the 1950’s 60’s and 70’s and probably many decades before were terrible for that kind of abuse, the offenders were protected more than the victims, this book most definitely sheds a light on Diana’s childhood and what both Diana and Charles lived through in their home life.

I love how you discuss the content of this book it is a sensitive and heart felt book and does deserve the respect your giving it and to take time to read it for what it is - very interesting and it explains a lot - I feel so sorry for the children at boarding schools and I sincerely hope that the new royal children arnt sent there x

    Hi Claire -
    1) Yes - I 100% agree, I too get narc vibes with him. 2) I am an avid reader and am hearing what you're saying about the way some books are being written now. I think we also need to be wary of books that are actually generated by AI (at least in part). There is something so special about old books. 3) Keep going on your hair growout! I stopped dyeing mine during a LONG lockdown in Australia in 2021 before I turned 47. It's a journey but so worth it - liberating and empowering, especially when you get there 🙂

Its a very powerful read. To send an 8yr old to boarding school is cruel. But seems all the aristocracy do it as its expected. The abuse is shocking. No love very harsh. It was a hard read. Thanks Claire.

Claire, this is my first vlog and I am totally hanging on. It’s like I’m on a FaceTime call with my girlfriend going through my evening. I love this! On another note, the subject matter of this book, while “loyal” to an American who is drawn to everything loyal, is disturbing.

I think George will be a day pupil at Eton, given that the family live in Windsor. I loved watching your facial routine Claire and regarding the greying hair, I grew mine out over a year ago now and I haven't looked back. Once you get to one colour you can start enhacing the grey 💖

Love that you’re doing a very sensitive read. This topic is not easy to read; I’m so glad that this was not an option for me/my children- obviously it wouldn’t be as I’m a middle-class American, but still! What a sad thing, for a child!!
I could NEVER send my children away. ❤

🐦 🐦‍⬛ 🦜 Thanks, Claire, for the very honest review. I'm a bit of a coward, and I'm not sure I could read about this level of abuse. Your review was enough for me ❤

I have just finished reading A Very Private School by Charles Spencer. It is a good but harrowing read. It does give a glimpse of what the British Establishment and British Aristocracy world can be like, especially at these boarding schools and why they ran these schools in such a horrific way.
It was the same in state schools, back then, too. The whole process is about breaking the will of the child.
I went to school in the Eighties and Nineties and it was not easy. But nothing as like in the past.
I am glad Earl Spencer wrote this book. It is a story that had to be told and how brutal some of the staff were.
There is still abuse in some schools and it needs to be dealt with. Parents and children need to speak up and those brought to account.
Sadly some of these brutal staff at Maidwell will never face justice, as most have died. Those staff that stayed quiet, are just at fault! But at least Earl Soencer exposed their brutal legacy now.
I wish healing for Charles Spencer and the other former past Maidwell students. Your voice is being heard now and history must never be repeated again.
Thankyou for this great blog Claire. ❤

It was such a well written book. A great and insightful book even though the content regarding abuse was hard to read. It provided greater insight and understanding of not only Charles Spencer but also Diana and even King Charles . And of the generation’s of people who had similar childhoods experiences and backgrounds. Apart from being sent away to boarding school, the abuse and bullying If you look at particularly at childhood attachment theory it gives some understanding as to why Charles Spencer, Diana and King Charles in different ways had struggles/ challenges in their relationships as adults and some of the issues they had in their own individual ways. In regards to Prince George I have read where William was wanting George to go to Eton like he did but Catherine George to go to her old school a more regular school. No school is a one size fits all so hopefully George will go to the school best suited to him.

Hi Claire, George V was Queen Elizabeth II's grandfather. George VI was her father. She had a loving, affectionate relationship ❤ with her father and mother the Queen Mum, and sadly, Charles did not experience the same from Prince Philip at least. He was very close, though, to the Queen Mum. And the decade before the Queen died she was more relaxed by then and learned from mistakes made, I think, and she and Charles had a much better and loving relationship then.

Thanks re the book and re: the the Spencers Claire. Yes i don't agree with boarding school for under secondary school age kids. Say 13 onwards.is ok but he was way too young. I feel George is too sensitive for it currently too. Though they say what doesn't break you makes you lol.
They couldn't get away with that shocking behaviour now.. 😱😳 awful the abuse he and others endured.

I've just got to the end of this vlog and the thing I will never forget is Charles Spencer's first wedding. I remember watching it unfold, back in 1989, and being taken aback by how miserable the couple looked and how she reminded me of something from medieval times, in her ermine capped sleeves. There was something not quite right about the whole thing. Thanks for the vlog Claire, I think I'm going to give this book a miss 🕊

I cannot use skin toner on my face as it dries my skin. I have sensitive skin and my skin used to be very oily but since post-menopause, I now have dry skin. I have a dehydrated and itchy scalp since a very young age and have tried so many shampoos but not none of them have worked.

I think that Charles Spencer is a self-aware narcissist. He reminds me of HG Tudor. He has the negative traits of a narcissist (rage, adultery, lack of empathy sending his daughters to the same school, arrogance, seeking pity through victimhood, broken relationships etc). 😔
It’s telling that he doesn’t have relationships with his children and didn’t attend his daughters weddings. I suspect that - as much as we can sympathise with his experiences at school and how the abuse destroyed the ‘human’ parts of his personality - his daughters would tell a VERY different story about him and what he’s like…

It is strange that Earl Spencer sent his daughters to the same school, b4 he moved to South Africa?? Looks like the school improved in the 90s? Perhaps he does not want to talk about his failed marriages or his relationship with his children in this book, in respect to their privacy.
