  • Alexandra Adams is one of the 1.5 million stars working in the NHS but her light shines uniquely to other medical students. She is deafblind, and has had to battle a huge number of prejudices on her journey to becoming a doctor. Rather than letting it dim her dreams, Alex went in search of other blind and deaf doctors who taught her that not only was what she was striving to achieve possible, but that she could thrive. A passionate advocate for diversity in healthcare, she created Faces of the NHS, a nationwide campaign to show that our differences should be celebrated, not stereotyped. Alexandra is a 4th year medical student. She is also registered blind and hearing impaired, making her the first deafblind person in the UK to be trained towards becoming a doctor. Having faced discrimination and inequality in the workplace, she advocates for better diversity, inclusivity and representation for those with disabilities. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

I can get terrified at losing my eyesight, I have macular degeneration. I'm on fire to facilitate the creation of sustainable neighborhoods, and gather the great ideas of how we can transform our neighborhoods, communities, and regions into sustainable, walkable, great places to live. Alendra, your sharing strikes to the heart of the solution, it's the people, it's us. Our unique differences and contributions, become the gift. We get to unwrap and discover us, and create sustainable neighborhoods. Even if I lose my eyesight, the brilliance of who we are will help me thru. Because that's who we are. Thank you

If a medic is very blind how could they do the job? A lot of their work is visual, at a guess over 95%.

I think she is selfish. She funded her medical degree through a gofundme crowd funder. That is selfish, because as a physician she will earn a large secure salary, and she will never have job worries. She could have just taken a Bank or Student Loan. She raised £27,000, because she is disabled and a medical student. Other non-medical students are trying to raise money to fund their studies. None are being very successful, because they are not doing medicine. People donated to her, because they do not realise that medics earn a fortune. Medical students do not need to worry about taking Loans, as they can easily pay back their loans. Why didn't she just take a Bank Loan or a Student Loan? Other medical students who are not disabled are also crowd funding, with limited success. Look at her doing a TED talk. She is probably being paid to do it

Ugh. Medics are highly paid? Not in the UK. Check your facts first. Such ignorance.
