so, I'm profoundly deaf and speak very well. With my hearing aids ,I can hear good. not great, but good. without them, I'm deaf. It amazes people how well my speech is ..... I took 7 Years of speech lessons starting at age 2. It paid off :)
Thanks for all commenting because it’s really hard for me to understand what constitutes “deaf” because watching this video, I’m wondering, if she’s deaf, how would she know if you’re enunciating words correctly. From what I’ve read in the comments, hearing aids help tremendously?
the first think when I see a deaf blind attorney from Harvard speak perfectly I think "How Sway?!?". This amazing person shows the extent of the human will and capabilities and shows much we cut ourselves short..

Haben Girma is an inspiration for everyone with a disability. I can't even begin to imagine trying to become a lawyer and graduate law school at Harvard University while deaf and blind. That's amazing.
Haben- We saw the video of your talk and we are very, very proud of you, and your family must be very very proud of you too. I work with your Mom and we are amazed at the speech you gave in Ethiopia. Keep doing what you are doing: helping people is the best way to live!! Mhret Weldeabzghi Jonathan Hunt
So amazing to see Haben here!! I have been blessed to have met her when she was a little girl and to see her grow and blossom into the amazing woman she is now! Go Haben!!
+mastrgamr According to another comment "she is postlingually deaf so she learned how to speak before she lost her hearing. Then speech therapists would have worked to keep and improve those skills".. I would imagine this level of speaking would much harder if she was born deaf-blind, whether her senses were limited or not. Amazing human being.
Seeing Haben Grima made me go back in time and visualize one of my historical models, Hellen Keller, in real time. Hellen Keller has been one of my models growing up as I learned her story in my grade 7 English comprehension book. I am still amazed how Hellen Keller did what she did. When I see Haben do what she is doing as a deaf blind student, I am humbled deeply praising the Lord for giving us someone like her to inspire us in our time. What an extraordinary woman. Her communication skills are amazing. She indeed has overcome all challenges. Great soul....
I had a bilateral stroke in January. Still have fine motor issues in my right hand and minor issues with speech. It's easy to become envious of normal people. I wish I could write regularly again. But then I watch this and become very thankful of what my stroke didn't take. My sight and hearing. I'm so grateful I still have both. And it's very inspiring that Girma doesn't let it stop her. Despite her disabilities, she keeps pushing forward. ❤ I'd hire her as my lawyer within a second
What a fantastic talk, congratulations and thank you Haben. Advocating for and protecting the rights of people with disabilities, changing attitudes and culture around disability, you have your work cut out for you, but you are clearly up to the challenge!
I can literally listen to her talk all day! Beautiful to look at and listen too! So motivational to us ppl that have disabilities and for those of you that don't as well! She's an amazing woman! Chocolate cake for all! Lol
Am also Deafblind based in Malawi 🇲🇼 doing my high school but l experience along of challenges in accessing information l pray 🙏 that developers come out with affordable communication tools so that also developing countries should access
Lol, salty. She didn't run away from Eritrea, she was actually born in America. Her mother ran away because the instability from the DERG regime. Now I know that Ethiopians get bitter saying us doing anything remarkable. Noted. She has said that she is eritrean and even BBC introduced her as Eritrean-American! Stay mad though, I love it :)
Jordan Left she did publicly acknowledged her dad is Ethiopian. All that whether she's Ethiopian or Eritrean is irrelevant for she's a great role model to all black women in the world. Wish her all the best.

In fact, if the disabled people are asked to answer yes or no, for the creation of an international tribunal for the rights of persons with disabilities, The answer is yes. I'm curious to know how she speaks so well! I've seen a few videos of Hellen Keller talking and it's very slow and stuttered, whereas Haben conducts here conversations normally (albeit with a slightly noticeable tone-deafness). How on earth did they (her and her teachers) do it?
Matthew Thompson " SHE and her teachers...." It all depends on when the person loses their hearing...she obviously lost her hearing after learning to speak. Helen Keller was an extreme case and all the more astounding. She lost her sight and hearing before age two.

i would be completely fine with this deaf blind lawyer. You know her work ethic is superhuman!..not to mention she is just adorable.
Ms. Girma encourages all of us to be aware that if we, the sighted hearing, can do something about discrimination, we should. Inspiring
What amazes me is how she's able to speak! How do they teach deaf-blind people to formulate the sounds of words?!?
+mastrgamr She has limited hearing & sight
