That’s awesome! Add a little up lighting to the gargoyle with one of your small LED spotlights and really put it over the top. Great tutorial, can’t wait to see what you have in store for us next.
Great video and well worth the short wait, Derek! The final bookcase makes a fantastic display for some of your Mansion collection. The wallpaper really gives the case a theme-detailed look.
I am late to the party but wanted to say your art is amazing!!! And I definitely want to add a little flair to my Disney Haunted Mansion collection. Be well!!
I've watched nearly all your videos. SO GOOD! These are fantastic videos for everyone and they're easy enough to follow. I'm in LA as well. Let's get your HIC built! I'll help. I made mine years ago and understand the space issue!
I have a version of the plain and boring bookcases in my office/studio. Never knew they could look like this...Thanks for the great build, Derek. Plus a twin brother and two pneumatic staplers. Some folks have everything....Ha!
I sooooooo enjoy your videos. Don't know if you are anywhere near Rancho Cucamonga CA but if so, the Chaffey-Garcia house museum is hosting 3 more "Summer Spook Nights" (next one August 21). This past Saturday was our first and we "sold" out (free admission) at over 850 guests. Added to 40 vendors and a Victorian era setting with barn it was quite Beautiful. Thought you may like to see it...
I have watched for awhile but seeing you found not 2 but 2 bookcases to stain? Been to every type of sale in 11 months in NY and can not find wood cases at all. I'm floored at the things you make with your amazing industrial tools. I'm a Haunted Mansion fan since the second our parents took us to Disney World after it opened. Started my kids off early when they were two & three.
If you're on Facebook, check to see if your area has a "Buy Nothing" group. I found those bookcases on our Buy Nothing group when someone was remodeling and didn't want to go through the hassle of selling them.
It's awesome as usual. I'm jealous of your paint selections there. It is pretty much impossible to find anything within 200km of me that isn't just the basic.
Wow. So very wow. Who doesn’t have a laser cutter and gargoyle laying around? 😂 First off, that wood grain is fantastic. Also the wallpaper find?! Score! But wait... the lights! In. Each. Shelf. Are those the stick on press lights or something fancier?!???
Fun cool addition ! Good work man. The laser a new addition? How many watts is it? I feel like my diode laser should be able to do cuts like this but I can't seam to make it happen haha
Thanks! The laser was sent to me to test but has fallen short of my expectations. Takes way too long for simple work. Thankfully I've remedied that and have partnered with Glowforge and have one on its way to me. If you're interested and want to save $500 on one use my link glowforge.com/vanoaksprops. You'll save $500 and I'll get $500 for referring you.
Dude I just finished watching all of your videos lol…Super inspiring! I’m in California too out in Corona and a huge haunted mansion fan as well. I have a question, just ordered a 3D printer and wanted to use that to start casting some epoxy Disney inspired decorations. Since filament is kinda flimsy, what would be the best alternatives for casting that won’t be as heavy as epoxy but better quality than 3D printed filament?
Thanks Doug. As for your 3d print questions, 3d printer filament would be great for creating your models. It will require quite a bit of finishing work to get it to the point where you'd want to make copies of it, which under most circumstances be molded using silicone rubber. Once your silicone mold is cured you would then cast in resin of some kind. All of this to say that whether or not filament is flimsy doesn't really matter. Truthfully, you can make ver sturdy prints if you print at high resolution and use a lot of infill, but if you're just printing something to then be molded and cast in another material, the thickness of the printed part isn't that important.
Hey Doug, I live in Redlands and I too am a fan of Disney and the HM. I have a resin 3D printer and would be happy to help. I also love building props. Let me know.
The pedant in me demands I point out that the statue is a grotesque, not a gargoyle. Gargoyle, like gargle, comes from the word root for throat. A gargoyle has an open throat to funnel rain water or boiling oil. No throat and it is a grotesque.
I always love That Background Music... ! I can Feel October coming !! Great Project !!

Dude, that looks incredible! The whole room is amazing!
Thank you!

Exactly!
The puck lights are a nice touch!

A perfect fit for those pieces and the office!
Loved seeing your "Twin Brother" helping you with nailing the top of the bookcase with finishing nails...LOL!!!! Awesome video and build Derek!!!
He’s alright…I guess.

Great Ikea hack! That looks so at home in your office.
Ikea hacking is fun. They’re so generic that they can take on nearly any kind of overlay
Wow! Another home run! Great work! I love it. 🥰
Thanks so much!
Awesome! Love all your work!

Ok... HOW did you get a gargoyle from an actual cast? I'm getting really jealous now.
Awesome work!!!
No, this is another artists’ interpretation.
@@VanOaksProps Oh wow.... that's an insane recreation.
@@VanOaksProps where'd you buy it?

Fancy editing work there for a second, sir.
Thanks! I had to double my efforts 🤣
Great conversion from a dull boring bookcase to a Haunted Mansion inspired case!
May I ask where you got your full sized gargoyle from? Love it!
Thanks! I picked it up from a prop maker about 10 years ago. I don't recall their name.
What kind of lights are in the case? Great video!!

Cool
What size did you scale the busts and the gargoyle
to to when you printed?
They’re not printed. They’re cast resin.
How very fun
Thanks Linda! I thought so too.
Where did you get the gargoyle?
I bought it from another maker about 10 years ago
wow how large is that gargoyle? is a replica of that size available to buy?
I believe it’s the same size as in the ride. They sold a similar one in the park for a short time.
The gargoyle looks a lot like the one from 1313 harbor props
It is not. It’s quite different than the one they offer. Mine supposedly has lineage that points to KNBFX (Greg Nicotero’s fx company)
Did you make the gargoyle? I have been trying to build one and haven't been happy with it
I didn’t. But I may be making one in the future.
Well the wallpaper has now been added to the bookmarks........
"Buy Nothing Facebook Page"? I'm not familiar with that one....
You should check it out. It’s a great way to find free stuff and get rid of things you don’t need.
